[F] Domaine du Grand Tinel, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, in French
*Come on a Wine Tour with us!* --- Interview with Olivier the oenologue at the Domaine du Grand Tinel in Chateauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone valley in France.
We are visiting just when the harvest is in ongoing, so there is plenty of work (and noise) in the cellar. They have just brought in all the grapes from the vineyards. This is the vintage of 2007 which was very successful in Chateauneuf since it was not subject to the damaging rain that they had in other regions of France.
The Dom. du Grand Tinel is a family property since several generations. They also have a winery called Clos Saint Paul with 14 hectares. They have some 75 ha at Grand Tinel, some 60 ha in Chateauneuf and the rest in Cotes du Rhone. The vineyards are planted primarily with grenache, syrah, counoise and muscardin (very unusual) and some cinsault. Olivier is making his first vintage in Chateauneuf and has previously worked in Mendoza in Argentina.
The language is French [F]

Chateau Redortier Offering
Your health tip for the day, the surgeon general is now recommending 3-5 glasses of wine per day! Hey- I know that may sound like a lot to some of you but if you weigh 200 pounds and had 1-2 glasses of wine for lunch and then 2-3 glasses of wine with dinner there is your 3-5 glasses. Remember that during WW2 when the Germans occupied France the French workers requested 2 liters of wine per day in order for them to properly perform their duties. That is over 2 bottles per person per day! Today the economy is not in great shape so if you are going to drink wine every day you need to find some good values and one of the best areas for value in the world is the southern Rhone and more particular Cotes du Rhone. I can offer an incredible array of wines that carry the Cotes du Rhone title and cost under $15 per bottle!
The appellation Cotes Du Rhone represents wines produced in the Rhone Valley between Vienne, south of Lyon, and Avignon, a distance of 120 miles. The finest of these are sold under more specific names: Cote Rotie, Condrieu, Chateau Grillet, St. Joseph, Hermitge, and Coronas in the north and Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Chateauneuf du Pape, Lirac and Tavel to the south. Over the last few years the Rhone Valley has become known as one of the leading sources of outstanding quality wines at reasonable prices. One of the best selling wines in the store in the $10 price range over the last few years has been Cotes Du Rhone.

Château De La Gardine
The winemaking history of the Brunel family dates back to the 17th century, although it wasn't until 1945 that Gaston Brunel, a famous négociant, acquired the Château De La Gardine in Châteauneuf Du Pape. The estate is now run by his two sons, Patrick and Maxime, with the help of their wives Eve and Maryse and their children Marie-Odile and Philippe and is spread over 52 hectares of vineyards (48ha of red and 4ha of white) and 20 hectares of forests. The estate is famous for both the quality of its wines and for the unique shape of the Gardine bottle.

Being a winemaker is above all a matter of passion, it requires lots of time, lots of commitment, you really must love your vineyards and your wine, work them correctly; it is an emotional job, because we work vineyards which have been planted by our great grandparents, so it's important, it is a family business.

6. SOUNDBITE: (French) Christophe Montalban, Chateauneuf du Pape Museum Director:
The coming of the second Pope to Avignon in France gave a new boost to the Rhone Valley because he was a great fan of the wines of our region. We already had vineyards but this created hype for the wines of this region and Chateauneuf du Pape, which was the summer residence of the Pope based in nearby Avignon, has known an immense success, thanks to this.

There is always some collateral damage. If there is a crisis elsewhere we feel it too, because we don't live in a specific Chateauneuf du Pape bubble. However, production of our wine is very limited and for the most part it is sold for export, so Chateauneuf du Pape today is above much of the crisis which affects a large part of French viticulture.

LEAD IN:
Winemakers in the Rhone Valley say French wine is clawing its way back into the global market after years of watching foreign tastes turn to the innovative New World.
Unusually bad weather conditions this summer have affected the grapes in many regions, but producers in Chateauneuf du Pape say they have a fine vintage this year.
STORYLINE
Each year winemakers in Chateauneuf du Pape gather for an ancient tradition, the ceremony which marks the beginning of the harvest. This year confidence is high that 2007 will be a good year.
Oenologist (wine expert) Philippe Cambie explains what makes a vintage is a mixture of climate, conditions of the land, the individual wine maker and the time chosen to harvest.
The three grape varieties mostly used in Chateauneuf du Pape, Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre are ripe and healthy.
Unlike other regions like Bordeaux, where sixty days and nights of almost incessant rain has threatened to ruin large parts of the harvest this year, here the summer was dry, with some brief heat waves at the end of August.
In the South West some small vineyards have already lost their entire crop to a form of mildew, a fungal parasite which thrives in damp and warm conditions.
Winemaker Marie Giraud is confident that the 2007 harvest is going among one of the best. She says that being a winemaker is above all a matter of passion.
Over 55 per cent of the wine here is exported, which means that this area has been cushioned from the drop in domestic wine consumption in France.
French wine exports in the first half of the year rose 7.5 percent to 4.16 billion euros ($5.62 billion). according to the Federation of Wine and Spirit Exporters France (FEVS).
FEVS say champagne and cognac sales led the increase, whilst wine sales showed more modest growth, which reflected expansion in the global wine market.
Still wine exports rose 4.1 percent to 1.94 billion euros ($2.62 billion), with mixed results from region to region.
One of the most sought after years is the mythic 1978 vintage.
