Is it a BLANK Friday for Britain's shopping centres Early bird bargain hunters fail to show up
Is it a BLANK Friday for Britain's shopping centres? Early-bird bargain hunters fail to show up as they go ONLINE in search of the best deals (but there WAS a long queue at Greggs in Birmingham)
Shoppers are expected to spend to £2billion today and up to £4billion by Monday in Black Friday sales
But the CEO of fashion chain Jigsaw warned the discounts are 'deceptions' and said chain won't take part
Comes after Asda pulled out of Black Friday for the second year, focusing on Christmas deals instead
Black Friday threatened to turn into a damp squib today as major stores opened their doors early this morning only to find hardly any shoppers were waiting to get inside.
The Bullring in Birmingham opened three hours early at 7am as staff anticipated a rush of eager shoppers – but the only place with a queue was the Greggs bakery as just a handful of customers milled around the centre.
And at Tesco Extra in Kingston Park, Newcastle, there were more staff than customers with less than 20 people queuing at the doors when they opened at 5am, with piles of reduced Blaupunkt HD Smart TVs left untouched.
Britons are expected to spend up to £2billion today and up to £4billion over the next four days – ending on Cyber Monday – as retailers make the most of the American-imported shopping phenomenon.
But photographs taken this morning across stores in Britain showed only a small number of bargain-hunters making the most of the sales as they left stores with trolleys piled high with discounted goods.
It came as one retail boss today warned the deals are 'deceptions' and said the day makes shops look like 'traders peddling cheap stuff on a market stall' – and Money Saving Expert warned customers to watch out for ‘fool's gold’.
The fall in footfall follows the madness of Black Friday 2014 when stores were left looking like battlefields as shoppers literally fought over big screen TVs and police were called to restore order at many stores in London.
There were more staff than customers at the Currys PC World megastore on the Airport Retail Park in Coventry, with just ten people queuing at the doors when they opened at 6am.
Plumber Mark Cooper, 32, who was on the lookout for Christmas presents, said: ‘I am a bit disappointed with what is on offer. They were selling £1,000 TVs with just £100 knocked off.
‘No-one is going to buy a TV for that much this close to Christmas. For most people around here payday is almost a week away as well so I am not surprised there isn't many people here.’
The Big Comfy Bookshop in Coventry took a tongue-in-cheek swipe at Black Friday with its blackboard advertising deals, which said ‘Buy 1, get that 1’, ‘Spend £10, get a “Thanks mate”’ and ‘Tea and Coffee Normal Price’.
Today the chief executive of fashion chain Jigsaw said the retailer will not be taking part. Peter Ruis said the discounts are 'deceptions' because the goods on offer are often not worth the original price.
He told BBC News: 'We believe that Black Friday is a complete and utter deception. We hate the idea that all of these retailers create these sort of discounts that aren't really discounts.
'And in my industry they're often something that's a cheap fabric, that's been discounted at 20 per cent but actually it was never worth the 20 per cent extra, or it's last year's stock, or the poor suppliers taking a huge hit on the cost price to fund a one-off discount.
'It makes us all look like we're peddling cheap stuff in a market stall rather than things that our designers and our sourcing buyers have spent months, years creating.'
Meanwhile an off-duty police officer was stabbed in the neck, face and hand with a knife after he confronted a suspected shoplifter at an HMV store in Leeds shortly after it opened for Black Friday at 9am today.
The officer was taken to hospital to receiving treatment, but West Yorkshire Police spokesman said his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. A 36-year-old local man was detained by store staff and arrested.
Asda - which hosted frenzied scenes in 2014 when shoppers battled over TVs - has pulled out of Black Friday for the second year in a row claiming it will concentrate on low prices throughout the festive period.
The watchdog Which? found half of last year's so-called deals were cheaper in the months before and after the event. Just 8 per cent were one-day only offers where the Black Friday price was cheaper than on any other day.
Keith Richardson, managing director retail sector at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said he expected Black Friday to be ‘as big as ever this year’ as shoppers have seen ‘little if any impact’ after the EU referendum.

The Pristines- Getting my head together
Live at The Tin 27th January 2018
--------------------------------------------
The Pristines - out of Coventry, England. Indie lo-fi guitar pop including jangly chiming guitars with a touch of psychedelia and shoegaze = GAZEDELIA
Released 4-track tape cassette albums via fanzines in the early 90s before being asked to produce singles for the likes of Pillarbox Red records (UK) and most notably Sunday Records (USA).
Debuted with the Souls to the Devil 7 e.p for Sunday, which was quickly followed by the Kimberley Somebody single. The Pristines also appear on Sunday Records compilations and also featured on the Happy Sunday rare flexi with a cover version of labelmates They Go Boom! She's Not My Friend.
The Pristines finest moment on Sunday was the album Teen-Fraud, Pop-Whore (part one), released in 1995.
The Pristines still release CD albums today, however, no longer for Sunday but purely self-produced. Teen-Fraud was followed up by the equally poppy Get Caught in Showtime (2000), and the much darker & challenging 3rd album Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm? (2003). Before a whopping 17-track third album Coping: Not Coping (2005).
MySpace has led to the band forming new alliances and further releases have occurred. November 2007 saw the release of a 3-track mini CDR single on the Miami based Cloudberry records, a popular & productive new label running very much in the old fanzine ethos really independent style (cloudberry 59).
Cloudberry also put a Pristines track on their 5 band e.p Nothing Matters When We're Dancing that was not available by general release but given as a handout at selective indie nights at clubs in London & Sweden.
More recent developements have seen The Pristines agree a deal with Series Two Records to release the album States of Mine in 2008.
The Pristines still continue with their prolific output today, with releases including a collaboration with Japanese shoegaze artist Hideka on the mini-album Mayflower (itunes etc), and releases and re-releases of singles & albums on the Bandcamp platform
