9. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Yang Cheng, deputy general manager of National Stadium:
We didn't waste any water resources to have this snow festival... and we didn't produce any waste air or CO2, as we didn't burn or add chemicals to make artificial snow. Instead we made the snow from water under the natural environment by new technology.

STORYLINE:
The Bird's Nest, China's landmark Olympic stadium in Beijing, launched a snow festival on Saturday, attracting thousands to a range of winter activities.
Artificial snow blanketed the ground, covering 57,000 square metres (yards).
According to the organisers, more than 25,000 tons of snow were made for the winter carnival.
Temporary slopes for toboggans were set up where athletes once competed using artificial snow, which stadium staff said was made without carbon emissions or chemicals.
More than 1,000 visitors visited the stadium during the first morning of the snow festival, but the stadium management were hoping for 20,000 a day over the two-month festival, which will include both Christian and Chinese new years.
Visitors have to pay 120 yuan (18 US dollars) to enjoy skiing and snowboarding during the snow festival.
In the latest bid to boost its popularity, the company is also offering 40,000 yuan to the winner of a global campaign to select a new mascot and logo for the landmark stadium.
The Bird's Nest was recently given a green light by the government to host a friendly soccer match involving Spanish giants Real Madrid next August. The deal followed the news that the Race of Champions would continue to be staged at the venue for at least two more years.

The festival, which features sculptures and lanterns made from ice, is held at a reservoir two hours outside Beijing, not far from the Great Wall.
This year there was a display of cloth mock-ups of the Hong Kong skyline, to drum up nationalism in advance of the handover of the colony by Britain to
China in July.

Winter in Beijing 2011
The winter season should not make you just stay immobilized at home in order to keep yourself warm. It's just as fun as the other seasons once you've found some interesting things to do... just like what we did in this episode. Enjoy! :)
Winter wonderland at Bird's Nest
The Bird's Nest, China's landmark Olympic stadium in Beijing, is hosting a snow festival which attracted thousands to enjoy a wide variety of winter activities.Mounds of artificial snow, mini ski slopes and skating rinks were crowded with snow lovers bundled up like Eskimos. This is the festival's second year. Last year was the first time the event was held at the 526-million-dollar arena, and the representatives say they look forward to continuing to celebrate this new winter tradition.
National Speed Skating Hall for 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China
Schulitz Architects was one of the three finalists in the international competition for the 2022 Winter Olympics ice skating complex in Beijing, China, which comprises a 400 m speed skating track and additional ice skating areas.
In the proposed design, the Olympic Park’s existing landscape of hills and winding paths is extended to situate the new sports facility. It is located on a elevated podium within this hilly park landscape clearly visible from the surrounding areas. The landscape’s generous gestures welcome and invite the visitors, and accompany them inside the arena. The building complex combined with the surrounding landscape evolve to a place of individual identity and offer great opportunities for everyone. The distinctive triangular form derives from the inner organization, resulting in an iconic building, a new heart for Beijing’s Olympic Park.
The 400 m ice oval with its 12,000 spectators as the main Olympic venue is augmented by an additional ice hockey field and the new main attraction after the Olympic Games: an elevated ice skating track. The new elevated ice rink gives the public the opportunity to experience ice skating on a new level, promoting China's 300 Million People Playing Sports on Ice and Snow program. The ice skating track offers fantastic views of the inside and the surrounding landscapes and landmarks.
A restaurant area on the top level with views into the Olympic ice oval, ice hockey rink and the elevated ice skating track complements the experience.
The design of the roof and facade follow sustainable aspects according to LEED Gold certification standards: The external horizontal louvre system illuminates the interior without allowing direct sunlight to enter. At the same time, the visitors on the elevated ice skating track have the opportunity to experience the views of the outside landscape. The roof’s skylights are oriented to the north, illuminating the ice oval and auxiliary hall with indirect sunlight. Solar panels on the skylights provide electricity.
At night, the building is lit up with LED technology, allowing the building to glow in various colourful moods according to the current event.
The design’s optimized flexibility of use, the ondulating landscape design, the highly efficient building envelope and its implementation in the urban context resulted in a top prize in the international competition.
