The Final Curtain has happened, the lights are down and our doors have now temporarily closed to the public until 2013. Over the last few weeks staff at The REP have been busy packing costumes and props and are slowly settling into their temporary home in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, ready for our 2011 off-site programme of work.
The REP's building in Centenary Square is now surrounded by hoardings as construction work on the theatre and Library of Birmingham gets underway. A computer-generated video tour of the Library of Birmingham by Mecanoo Architecten has just been launched. With the flythrough people can get a real sense of how the new Library will look and feel inside and out.

GREAT BRITAIN: BIRMINGHAM (England, UK)
GREAT BRITAIN: BIRMINGHAM (England, UK)
Birmingham is the second-most populous city in the United Kingdom, after London, and the most populous city in the English Midlands. With an estimated population of 1,137,100 as of 2017, Birmingham is the cultural, social, financial and commercial centre of the Midlands.
It is the main centre of the West Midlands conurbation, which is the third most populated urban area in the United Kingdom, with a population in 2011 of 2,440,986.
A market town in the medieval period, Birmingham grew in the 18th-century Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw advances in science, technology, and economic development, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society. By 1791 it was being hailed as the first manufacturing town in the world. Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided an economic base for prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century. The Watt steam engine was invented in Birmingham.
The resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of political radicalism which, under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain, was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London, and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy. From the summer of 1940 to the spring of 1943, Birmingham was bombed heavily by the German Luftwaffe in what is known as the Birmingham Blitz. The damage done to the city's infrastructure, in addition to a deliberate policy of demolition and new building by planners, led to extensive urban regeneration in subsequent decades.
Birmingham's economy is now dominated by the service sector. The city is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a gamma+ world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network; and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $121.1bn (2014), and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education in the country outside London. Birmingham's major cultural institutions – the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations, and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots art, music, literary and culinary scenes. Birmingham is the fourth-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors.
People from Birmingham are called Brummies, a term derived from the city's nickname of Brum, which originates from the city's old name, Brummagem, which in turn is thought to have derived from Bromwich-ham. The Brummie accent and dialect are particularly distinctive.
Blue/Orange | In Conversation
Blue/Orange plays at The REP from 1 - 16 February.
Christopher is sectioned and admitted to a psychiatric hospital. As his doctor and senior consultant debate the cause of his psychosis, he makes the startling revelation that he's the son of Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin.
The two specialists are divided in their diagnosis and fiercely defend their opposing positions. Their power struggle escalates into an exchange over racism, ideology, prejudice and egotism. With each new revelation, all three find their layers are peeled back to reveal increasingly uncomfortable truths within themselves.
From Joe Penhall (Mindhunter, The Last King Of Scotland and The Road), this Olivier Award-winning play is a darkly funny dissection of institutional racism and mental health in modern Britain.
The cast features Thomas Coombes (Save Me, Sky) as Bruce, Richard Lintern (Silent Witness, BBC and The Crown, Netflix) as Robert and Ivan Oyik, who makes his professional stage debut as Christopher.
This House - Teaser Trailer
Following sell-out runs at the National Theatre and in the West End this extraordinarily prescient play takes on a new importance in the current political climate.
Roll back to 1974. The corridors of Westminster ring with the sound of infighting and backbiting as Britain's political parties battle to change the future of the nation, whatever it takes.
James Graham's biting, energetic and critically-acclaimed play, This House gives us a timely, moving and often amusing insight into the workings of British politics, with a live band on stage playing music from the era.

Our Country's Good British Sign Language Interpreted Flyer
Our Country's Good plays at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from 23 May - 2 June. Find out more here:
Both a comedy and a powerful drama, Our Country's Good shows us how we can escape the chains that bind us.
In 1787, ships with over 700 convicts on board set sail on an eight month voyage. When they arrive in Australia, their survival is by no means certain: supplies are running out, the convicts are stealing food or trying to escape and the guards are threatening mutiny.
Our Country's Good tells the extraordinary true story of a group of convicts and a young officer who rehearse and perform a play – Australia's first theatrical production. With opposition from the officers and a leading lady who may be hanged, the odds are stacked against them.
Back for a third year, Our Country's Good is a touring production made in co-production with Ramps on the Moon, whose previous collaborations include the comedy hit The Government Inspector and a critically acclaimed version of The Who's Tommy. The production features the creative use of audio description, captioning and British Sign Language interpretation. For more information visit rampsonthemoon.co.uk.
Brief Encounter At New Street Station
Couples recreated one of cinema’s most romantic moments at Birmingham New Street Station on Saturday 3 February 2018.
The couples, wearing authentic 1940s costumes, brought to life the moment from Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter when two strangers meet and fall in love.
The stunt was created to celebrate the return of the live theatre show of Brief Encounter to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. The hit play was first staged in the city in 2007 and went on to huge international acclaim.
The 1945 film, starring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, was named the ‘most romantic film’ of all time by a panel of actors, directors and critics in 2013.
The innovative stage play, produced by Birmingham Repertory Theatre and Kneehigh Theatre, uses live action and film to bring the movie classic to life.
Brief Encounter is at Birmingham Repertory Theatre until February 17th 2018.
