Richard III - The Blue Boar Inn
- Richard III Educational Resources
The Blue Boar Inn was medieval Leicester's 'Grand Hotel' and is believed to be where King Richard III stayed the night before the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. With the aid of detailed drawings, produced shortly before the Blue Boar was demolished, Richard Buckley has overseen a project to produce a detailed scale model of the building.
The Blue Boar Inn is believed to have been built in the mid-15th century on Medieval Leicester's High Street -- now Highcross Street. It was a large and elaborately decorated building, which would have housed wealthy aristocrats and merchants as they travelled through the country.
In the 1830s, the Inn was demolished - and until now, the only evidence for what it looked like consisted of a pair of engravings made by Leicestershire artist John Flower in 1826.
Richard Buckley came across new evidence when looking through the notebooks of 19th century architect Henry Goddard -- a member of important Leicestershire architectural dynasty the Goddard family. One notebook contained extensive notes and measurements of a large timber frame building which Richard immediately recognised as the Blue Boar Inn.
Richard asked Steffan Davies, an architect with experience in historic building drawings, if he could put together computer-aided design (CAD) drawings of the building based on Henry Goddard's plans. Steffan agreed, and put together a series of drawings as well as a 3-D computer model.
This was then passed to the University of Leicester Department of Physics and Astronomy and converted into a scale model using the Department's 3D printer. The model shows all the timber framing, the jointing, the moulding of the timbers, the fireplaces and the chamber in which Richard III was said to have stayed.

York Boar Badge, as worn by supporters of King Richard III (c.1483)
Find out more about the York Boar Badge, as worn by the supporters of Richard III following his coronation in 1483.
With only two ever found in Yorkshire these badges are a very rare item of British history. In celebration of a special exhibition running between July and October 2013, the Yorkshire Museum commissioned a special 18 carat gold replica created by York-based jeweller Charmian Ottaway as part of York's year-long programme of events entitled Richard III: Rumour and Reality.

A Look at Leicester - Richard III
A video tour of sites associated with Richard III in Leicester, made while I was waiting for the queue to the Richard III archaeological dig to shorten. There is also a downloadable trail available on the Leicester City Council website and one for mobile phones on the Empedia website. Richard the Third 0001
The full story about Richard the third has not yet been written even though he died such a long time ago.
Mouth swabs and DNA tests are to be deployed in the search for the lost remains of one of England's most reviled monarchs after the discovery of a deformed skeleton beneath a Leicester car park.
The crooked spine of a long-dead warrior, complete with an arrow in its back and a gash across its skull, was found on the site of the Grey Friars church, where King Richard III is thought to have been buried in 1485 after losing his throne and his life at the battle of Bosworth Field.
Archaeologists remain cautious about linking the bones with the king, but they describe it as certainly warranting further detailed examination.
Lodgings of Richard III recreated by archaeologists at the University of Leicester
Dr Richard Buckley OBE talks to Sky News about finding architect drawings of the central range of the Blue Boar Inn which was demolished in the 1800's. The Blue Boar Inn has always been associated with Richard III as local legend suggests he stayed there before leaving Leicester to meet Henry Tudor at Bosworth.
The drawings were done by a local Leicester architect Henry Goddard shortly before the demolition and were kept in a private family collection before Richard Buckley saw them and realised what they were.
The drawings have been transferred into a modern CAD package and a small 3D print has been produced.
