The Boars Head Carol - The Young Tradition with Shirley and Dolly Collins
The carol has been sung at Queen's College, Oxford, with the boar's head in procession for around 500 years. Legend has it, back then, a student rambling through the surrounding forest was attacked by a wild boar. He overcame it by ramming a vbolume of Aristotle (possibly Historia Animalium Major ?) down it's throat, and the beast became a celebratory dinner. the wild boar had become extinct in England by the end of the 16th century.
20 303 + 20 312 hammer through Swinton (South Yorkshire)
The sound of the English Electric Type 1 echoes across the valley as 20 303 and 20 312 head full boar through Swinton (South Yorkshire). The pair were working an RHTT from the Sheffield direction (3S14). It's always nice to hear a good bit of English Electric thrash!
Enjoy!

Title: The Loyal Lover
Artist: The Young Tradition (Royston Wood, Heather Wood, Peter Bellamy)
Album: Galleries (1968)
Lyrics (Traditional):
I'll weave my love a garland, it shall be dress'd so fine
I'll set it round with roses, with lilies, pinks and thyme
And I'll present it to my love when he comes home from sea.
For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me.
I wish I were an arrow that sped into the air
To seek him as a sparrow, and if he were not there
How quickly I'd become a fish to search the raging sea.
For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me.
I would I were a reaper, I'd seek him in the corn,
Or would I were a keeper, I'd hunt him with my horn.
I'd blow a blast when found at last beneath the greenwood tree
For I love my love, and I love my love, because my love loves me.

The Young Tradition - The Innocent Hare
Sleeve notes - A typical English hunting song, charming despitr its bloodthirstiness. We learned it from the singing of Bob and Ron Copper, and is probably closer to the 'Copper Sound' than anything else in our repertoire. Royston's bass line is not, however the same as that used by the Coppers, and Heather's harmony is a definite addition to the Copper pattern. After hearing our arrangement decribed, Ron Copper said to us: I've been telling Bob for years we should have a young lady sing with us !
The Banks of the Nile - The Young Tradition (1968)
Title: The Banks of the Nile
Artist: The Young Tradition (Royston Wood, Heather Wood, Peter Bellamy)
Album: Galleries (1968)
Lyrics (Traditional):
Oh hark, the drums are beating and I must haste away
The bugles sweetly sound and I can no longer stay
We are called out to Portsmouth and it's many a weary mile
For to fight the Blacks and Heathens on the Banks of the Nile
Oh Willie, dearest Willie, don't leave me here to mourn
Don't make me curse and rue the day that ever I was born
For parting from you Willie is like parting from me life
Oh, stay at home dear William and I will be thy wife
Oh, I'll cut off me yellow hair and go along with you
I'll dress myself in velveteen and go to Egypt too
I'll fight and hold thy banner, love, and fortune it may smile
And we'll gather love and honour on the Banks of the Nile
You waist it is too slender, your features are to fine
Your body it is too weak, me love, to stand a long campaign
The sultry suns of Egypt your precious health may spoil
And the sandy desert places on the Banks of the Nile
Oh cursed, cursed be the day that e'er the wars began
For they've taken out of England full many a fine young man
Our lads have gone to perish on that unwholesome soil
And they never will return from the Banks of the Nile
Shepherds Arise - the Young Tradition, Shirley and Dolly Collins
From the CD 'The Holly Bears the Crown'. Originally recorded in 1969. A few weeks later The Young Tradition broke up and the record was never released. Sadly Royston Wood died in 1990, Peter Bellamy died in 1991 and Dolly Collins in 1995. This is to their memory.
Trad: from The Copper Family of Rottingdean, Sussex.
Good honest singing, the way it should be.
