Exploring Old San Juan | Capitol Building | 2017 | Prior to Hurricane Maria | Explore Puerto Rico
It's the last installment of Day 5! So after spending the first part of the day exploring Old San Juan, we made our way East past San Cristobal Fort to the Capitol. It was a beautiful walking tour of the area! The building was wonderful and had some really great ocean views as well!
As you can see, we enjoyed seeing the traffic, and hid from the rain that was on the way. In addition, we ended the night showing you the view from Posada San Francisco from the night and the day!
This video was recorded prior to Hurricane Maria

Puerto Rico Capitol Building in San Juan
El Capitolio de Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico (Spanish for rich port) is officially named the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean.
Puerto Ricans became U.S. citizens in 1917, and the United States Congress legislates many aspects of Puerto Rican life. However, the islanders may not vote in U.S. presidential elections.Since 1947, Puerto Ricans have been able to elect their own governor. The official languages of Puerto Rico are Spanish and English, with Spanish being the primary language. The island's current political status, including the possibility of statehood or independence, is widely debated in Puerto Rico. A referendum on statehood, independence, or continuance of the status quo held on November 6, 2012.
The terms boricua and borincano derive from Borikén and Borinquen respectively, and are commonly used to identify someone of Puerto Rican heritage. The island is also popularly known in Spanish as la isla del encanto, meaning the island of enchantment.
Columbus named the island San Juan Bautista, in honor of Saint John the Baptist. Eventually, traders and other maritime visitors came to refer to the entire island as Puerto Rico, and San Juan became the name of the main trading/shipping port.

San Juan, officially Municipio de la Ciudad Capital San Juan Bautista (Municipality of the Capital City, Saint John the Baptist), is the capital and most populous municipality in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 395,326 making it the 46th-largest city under the jurisdiction of the United States. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico (Rich Port City). Puerto Rico's capital is the second oldest European-established capital city in the Americas, after Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic. Several historical buildings are located in San Juan; among the most notable are the city's former defensive forts, Fort San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza, the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas.
Today, San Juan is one of Puerto Rico's most important seaports, and is the island's manufacturing[citation needed], financial, cultural, and tourism center. The population of the Metropolitan Statistical Area, including San Juan and the municipalities of Bayamón, Guaynabo, Cataño, Canóvanas, Caguas, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Carolina and Trujillo Alto, is about 2 million inhabitants; thus, about half the population of Puerto Rico now lives and works in this area. The city has been the host of numerous important events within the sports community, including the 1979 Pan American Games, 1966 Central American and Caribbean Games, events of the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics, the Caribbean Series and the Special Olympics and MLB San Juan Series in 2010.

San Juan, Puerto Rico's capital and largest city, sits on the island's Atlantic coast. Its widest beach fronts the Isla Verde resort strip, known for its bars, nightclubs and casinos. Cobblestoned Old San Juan features colorful Spanish colonial buildings and 16th-century landmarks including El Morro and La Fortaleza, massive fortresses with sweeping ocean views, as well as the Paseo de la Princesa bayside promenade.
San Juan is a place where old meets new, where the city’s colonial past meshes comfortably with an emerging modern urbanity. Old San Juan is a walled enclave with cobblestoned roads, leafy plazas, and historic churches and forts. Beyond the walls, modern San Juan is draped with murals, and its cadre of museums and galleries form a dynamic art scene. In recent years, many innovative restaurants have opened, with farm-to-table eateries beckoning foodies and casual diners alike. The exuberant nightlife – dance clubs, lounges, bars, casinos – has long been a highlight, as have San Juan’s dazzling beaches. In September 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico, becoming the biggest storm to impact the island in 89 years. While San Juan did not escape the wrath of the hurricane, there's no doubt that it will rebuild and remain the enchanting city it's always been.

Exploring Old San Juan ???????? Puerto Rico After the Storm. Travel Guide to the City ????
We spend the day exploring Old San Juan, Puerto Rico to find out the best things to do in the old city!
We start out at one of the furthest points in the city, an old fortification called Castillo San Felipe del Morro San Juan. We spend a little while exploring the vast grounds, people watching, and enjoying the view, including overlooking an old cemetery.
Next we head out into the city and come across a beautiful courtyard that reminded us quite a bit of Southern Spain. The courtyard is part of the Museo de las Américas but you don’t have to pay to go into the museum in order to see the courtyard.
It was a really hot day so we decided to grab some ice cream at the famous Señor Paleta. It is essentially ice cream on a stick and we got one Oreo flavour and one Nutella.
Afterwards we headed to the Paseo de la Princesa which is a promenade which really comes alive on Sunday’s with vendors and even people salsa dancing. After this we headed up the street to find the famous umbrellas on Fortaleza Street. Being Sunday it was packed with people.
Lastly we decided to try a famous Puerto Rican drink. We’ve had many Pina Coladas in the past without knowing where they came from. But it turns out the were invented right in Old San Juan at a restaurant called Barrachina. We head to the original restaurant to try it for ourselves.
