Chattri Memorial in Brighton
The Chattri Memorial in Brighton is dedicated to those Indian soldiers who fought during WW1 and died in hospitals in the city.
The monument is where 53 Sikh and Hindu soldiers were cremated according to their religious last rites.
An annual remembrance ceremony takes place at the site every year - visit chattri.com for more information.

The Chattri Memorial Service - Brighton
The Chattri Memorial Service is dedicated to the Indian Soldiers who fought on the Western Front during the First World War. The 53 Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton Royal Pavilion (Royal Pavilion was used as a convalescent home for injured soldiers) were cremated on the Sussex Downs near Patcham and their ashes were scattered in the sea in accordance with their religious rites. Chattri was built on the exact spot where their bodies were creamated.

Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales walks up to the memorial which is covered in a flag, he pulls the string and the memorial is unveiled. He salutes and talks to another man as they walk down the steps, other soldiers are present. M/S as the Prince reads an address from a paper. M/S as he walks about and meets people, he gets in his car and salutes, a man shakes his hand.
Intertitle - ' The children give the Prince a tremendous reception on his first visit to London-by-the-Sea.'
L/S of crowds of children waving flags, his car drives down the road and he salutes. He is followed by cars containing other dignitaries.

The Chattri Indian War Memorial Near Brighton 2019
A short video, taken on Monday 8th April 2019, showing The Chattri, a memorial built to honour the Indian dead of the First World War. It stands on the South Downs near Patcham in East Sussex, Southern England, at the place where Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton war hospitals during 1914-1915 were cremated. The Chattri is a war memorial in the English city of Brighton and Hove. It is sited 500 feet (150 m) above the city on the South Downs above the suburb of Patcham, and is accessible only by bridleway. It stands on the site where a number of Indian soldiers who fought for the British Empire were cremated during the First World War. The structure has Grade II listed status, reflecting its architectural and historic importance. In 2017, as part of the 100th anniversary of World War I, the site of the Chattri was dedicated as a Fields in Trust Centenary Field because of its local heritage and significance.

Why There Is A Memorial To Indian Soldiers In The Middle Of The English Countryside | Forces TV
Around 1.5 million Indian Army soldiers served alongside British troops during the First World War. More than 74,000 lost their lives. Hundreds of wounded Indian troops were hospitalised in the English town of Brighton, in sites such as the Royal Pavilion. The Hindus and Sikhs who died were cremated on the Sussex Downs and, in 1921, the Chattri memorial was constructed on the cremation site.

Indian soldiers commemorated at Brighton's Royal Pavilion
Indian soldiers treated at hospitals in the city during World War One have been commemorated.
The Indian High Commissioner Ranjan Mathai joined dignitaries in laying wreaths at the India Gate, which is outside the regency palace.
The ceremony was organised by Brighton & Hove City Council, in conjunction with The Chattri Memorial Group and Brighton & Hove Black History, as part of the city's World War One commemorations.

Indian soldiers killed in World War I commemorated in Brighton
London (United Kingdom), Jun 11 (ANI): During the First World War that started in 1914, 345 Indian soldiers were brought to Brighton, on the coast of southern England to recuperate during the war. The memorial was erected in 1916 after the Indian troops left. The Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died were cremated on the Downs in 1921. The memorial called Chattri. It is situated on a hilltop in Brighton. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Family members of slain Indian soldiers paid tribute to their lost ones today.
