Camel Safari in the Thar Desert near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India
This is a video showcasing the camel safari I took across the Thar Desert located near Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India. The 4 day safari was an amazing experience and my camel guide and his nephew were wonderful hosts. They took me to Gypsy villages, secluded sections of the desert and other areas which I would have never seen on a typical tour. It was great to experience the more rural and traditional lifestyle that many Indian people still live. I'd highly recommend this to anyone: :

Riding on ship of the desert in Thar Desert, Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer, nicknamed as The Golden city, is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres west from the state capital Jaipur. It was once known as Jaisalmer state. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples. Many of the houses and temples are finely sculptured. It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (great Indian desert) and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District. Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer has transformed itself into a major tourist destination of India. Situated amid picturesque Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer city commands premiere position among the tourist attractions scattered all over the desert land of Rajasthan. The Jaisalmer city is revered both by Indians as well as foreign tourists.
Jaisalmer is named after its founder Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means the Hill Fort of Jaisal. Jaisalmer is sometimes called the Golden City of India because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city gives a yellowish-golden tinge to the city and its surrounding area. Like various other cities of Rajasthan, you will discover different facets of Jaisalmer as you explore this wonderful city with us. Tough there are historical monuments scattered all over the city but the Jaisalmer Fort will immediately command your attention. Made of sand stones and locally known as Sonar Quila, the Jaisalmer Fort is a dominating structure amidst sands. The Jaisalmer city is also known for its old mansions, better known as Havelis. Among many of them you will find Salim ji ki haveli and Nathmal ji ki haveli as the most striking. There are other monuments too, which are equally important because of their distinct and individual architecture. The amalgamation of ancient and the medieval era architecture will catch your fancy.
The Jaisalmer city is a prominent educational as well as cultural hub in the region and regularly showcases the vivid cultural aspects of Rajasthan. Among others, it includes folk dances as well as semi classical and folk music. The city is easily accessible and people are warm and welcoming. In spite of harsh living conditions, Rajasthani people are known for their warm hospitality all over.

DESERT SHIP (रेगिस्तान जहाज और संकट काल) - भागीरथ
A camel is an even-toed ungulate which has the characteristic hump, or humps, on its back. They were domesticated over 3,500 years ago and have been used for transportation ever since.
Camel Safari in the Thar Desert (Jaisalmer, India).
When you visit Jaisalmer, there are two attractions you might want to try. Taking a camel safari and visiting Jaisalmer's Thar Desert. Some friends and I decided to take a safari tour with the Camel Man, a local legend in Jaisalmer. We booked a tour through our guesthouse Shahi Hotel and a truck came to pick us up and skirted us to the Jaisalmer desert. There, we met the Camel Man and his family and proceeded to mount our camels. It was a nice safari. Here's some insight into how to ride a camel and what to expect if you take a Sunset Camel Safari with the Camel Man at Thar Desert in Jaisalmer, India.
Ship of Desert (रेगिस्तान का जहाज)
the camel is known as the ship of the desert. Camel was used in desert places. We are not using it in the present time but it is still used in a little bit places in Rajasthan.

Desert Camel Safari with kids in Jaisalmer India
Jaisalmer is not on the top of most peoples' India travel lists but it was our favourite stop on our 5 week India trip.
We had a great time exploring the old fortified city. A huge highlight was touring the desert on our overnight camel safari organized by Wanderlust Camel Safari and Wanderlust Guest House.
We also went out to the desert village of Khuri and stayed with a local family at Badal House. The kids loved playing with their calf and baby goat.
Jaisalmer is a great family travel destination in India. I'd highly recommend you consider a visit here when you go to India.

Camel safari in Jaisalmer amid sand dunes in Thar desert
Desert safaris on camels have become increasingly popular around Jaisalmer. Domestic and international tourists frequent the desert seeking adventure on camels for anything from a day to several days. This ecotourism industry ranges from cheaper backpacker treks to plush Arabian night style campsites replete with banquets and cultural performances. During the treks tourists are able to view the fragile and beautiful ecosystem of the Thar desert. This form of tourism provides income to many operators and camel owners in Jaisalmer as well as employment for many camel trekers in the desert villages nearby.
Thar Desert provides the recreational value in terms of desert festivals organized every year. Rajasthan desert festivals are celebrated with great zest and zeal. This festival is held once a year during winters. Dressed in brilliantly hued costumes, the people of the desert dance and sing haunting ballads of valor, romance and tragedy. The fair has snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats and folk performers. Camels, of course, play a stellar role in this festival, where the rich and colorful folk culture of Rajasthan can be seen.
Camels are an integral part of the desert life and the camel events during the Desert Festival confirm this fact. Special efforts go into dressing the animal for entering the spectacular competition of the best-dressed camel. Other interesting competitions on the fringes are the moustache and turban tying competitions, which not only demonstrate a glorious tradition but also inspire its preservation. Both the turban and the moustache have been centuries old symbols of honor in Rajasthan. Evenings are meant for the main shows of music and dance. Continuing till late into the night, the number of spectators swells up each night and the grand finale, on the full moon night, takes place by silvery sand dunes.
The Thar Desert also known as the Great Indian Desert is a large, arid region in the northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent and forms a natural boundary running along the border between India and Pakistan. With an area of more than 200,000 km2 (77,000 sq mi), it is the world's 18th largest subtropical desert. Thar Desert extends from the Sutlej River, surrounded by the Aravalli Ranges on the east, on the south by the salt marsh known as the Great Rann of Kutch (parts of which are sometimes included in the Thar), and on the west by the Indus River. Its boundary to the large thorny steppe to the north is ill-defined. It lies mostly in the Indian State of Rajasthan, and extends into the southern portion of Haryana and Punjab states and into northern Gujarat state.
In Pakistan, the desert covers eastern Sindh Province and the southeastern portion of Punjab Province, where it joins the Cholistan Desert near Bahawalpur. The Tharparkar District is one of the major parts of the desert area. Tharparkar consists of two words: Thar means 'desert' while Parkar stands for 'the other side'. The Thar Desert slopes imperceptibly towards the Indus Plain and surface unevenness is mainly due to sand dunes. The dunes in the south are higher, rising sometimes to 152 m whereas in the north they are lower and rise to 16 m above the ground level. The Aravalli forms the main landmark to the south-east of Thar Desert. The soils of the Arid Zone are generally sandy to sandy-loam in texture. The consistency and depth vary according to the topographical features. The low-lying loams are heavier and may have a hard pan. Some of these soils contain a high percentage of soluble salts in the lower horizons, turning water in the wells poisonous.
Stretches of sand in the desert are interspersed by hillocks and sandy and gravel plains. Due to the diversified habitat and ecosystem, the vegetation, human culture and animal life in this arid region is very rich in contrast to the other deserts of the world. The Thar is one of most heavily populated desert areas in the world and the main occupations of people living here are agriculture and animal husbandry.
