Joey the Donkey - The Donkey Assisted Therapy Centres
Joey was the 8,730th donkey to join our family at our Sanctuary in 2002. It soon became evident that Joey was a bright, intelligent donkey who loved lots of contact with people and plenty of stimulation and fun.
In 2005 Joey underwent special training for Donkey Assisted Therapy and joined the team at our Manchester Centre. Riding instructor, Robina Melling, says: Joey has a cheeky twinkle in his eye and loves to play Tug O War with his friends and fling wellies around his paddock. He is absolutely superb with the children in the arena and is incredibly steady, never putting a foot wrong. Joey also adores meeting the public and we often take him to local shows.
The Donkey Assisted Therapy Centres are a perfect way to give donkeys like Joey a rewarding and fulfilling role.

As part of the Donkey Sanctuary’s objective to further elevate the role of donkeys, Festina Lente is working with a number of staff in developing their skills as Equine Assisted Learning Facilitators with the first week taking place last week. For all those involved in EAL, we know that an important part is observing equine interactions and behaviour. Cocoa and Zippo - two of the donkeys that live in the center, gave us all a wonderful insight into how donkeys interact with each other and demonstrating how suitable they are for this line of work …………….

A little girl who had been mute since birth uttered her first words - saying 'I love you' - to a DONKEY.
Little Amber Austwick hadn't spoken a word in her life - but her parents were stunned when they heard her tell a rescue donkey called Shocks she had befriended that she loved him.
The family, from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, visited The Donkey Sanctuary near their home, so Amber could pet the animals as therapy.
But after developing a special bond with one of the donkeys, Shocks, who had been rescued from abuse, mum Tracy, 39, took Amber there as often as possible.
And after weeks of bonding, Amber said her first words.

Hand in Paw therapy dogs help patients across Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - For eight years, Terri Jones and her 13-year-old King Charles Cavalier, Abby, have been visiting the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
They don't care what kind of bandages people have or scars, said Jones, Hand in Paw's Director of Volunteers. They don't see that. They just see the person and they just love the people.
Terri and Abby visit the hospital once a week and are one of the many animal-assisted therapy teams with the Birmingham-based nonprofit Hand in Paw.
There's something about a dog [and the] love they give you, said cancer fighter Patricia McGowan from Springville, AL.
They don't ask anything, but still they just love you. Just to pet a dog or a cat, they say that lowers your blood pressure and I believe them. It's just such a privilege, it really is, McGowan said.
Therapy dogs have long been known for cheering up people of all ages up on their visits, but now the Hand in Paw dogs are taking on a new role within occupational and physical therapy programs across the state.
One of those programs is at Children's of Alabama where the dogs work with Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy conceptualized by Dr. Edward Taub.
Typically we work with kids who have hemipschia or they've had a traumatic brain injury, which means that one side of their body isn't working as well as the other, said Children's of Alabama occupational therapist, Jackie Brunson.
We work with their affected, [weaker] hand. The purpose of our therapy is not only to get them stronger and to get them to use their hands, but [also] how they can make it applicable to when they go home, Brunson said.
To do that, the team at Children's of Alabama places the healthy side of the body in a cast so they can focus in on strengthening the weaker side of the body.
The typical patient begins therapy using only 15 percent of his/her affected arm for daily routines, but by the end of the therapy, he/she uses roughly 64 percent of the arm.
The Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy program at Children's of Alabama is one of the best in the world, which is why 10-year-old Finn and his family travel over 4,000 miles from England to Alabama once a year for him to participate in the program.
We came last year for the first time, said Helen Gaffney, Finn's mother. The difference it made was dramatic.
The three weeks in therapy is an uphill climb for children training one-on-one with therapists for three to four hours each day, Monday through Friday.
The room lights up when [our Hand in Paw teams] come in, Brunson said.
The kids get engaged and really start using their hands a lot more. Skills that might have been challenging for them to do in therapy the previous day we find [with the dogs] it's easier for them to work on those skills. They don't realize they are doing therapy anymore, she added.
Hand in Paw volunteer therapy team Tina Currie and her 4-year-old Sheltie, Chivas, work alongside the Children's of Alabama occupational therapists to make therapy fun.
When Finn was asked what he likes about having Chivas beside him in therapy he said, It just makes me feel more determined.
Some of the kids learn to walk for the first time while they are following a dog on a leash, Brunson said about the work she's done with Hand in Paw.
It's just amazing what these children will do with these dogs around, she said.
Right now Hand in Paw is in need of more volunteer therapy teams. There are currently over 90 facilities throughout the Birmingham metro area on the waiting list, but there are not enough volunteers to fill the needs.
The places that the Hand in Paw teams typically visit are medical centers, schools, early intervention programs, social service agencies and nursing homes.
The therapy dog teams are made up of dog owners and their personal dogs. During the training, Hand in Paw trains the owner, who then goes home and trains their dog. Later, the dog and owner are tested together by Pet Partners to see if they qualify to be a registered therapy dog team.
But you don't have to have a dog to volunteer on visits with Hand in Paw. There are a number of volunteers within the organization who are registered Volunteer Assistants helping alongside a therapy team for the more advanced visits.

EMMA Audiobook by Jane Austen | Part 2 of 2 | Audio book with subtitles
Emma (version 3) Jane AUSTEN
Jane Austen famously described Emma Woodhouse, the title character of her 1815 novel, as a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like. Yet generations of readers have loved Emma, as much for her blunders as for her wit and vivacity. Emma, handsome, clever, and rich, has nothing else to do but try to pair off her friends, and she consistently mis-reads the relationships and situations around her as much as she mis-reads her own heart. The novel features a wonderful cast of characters, including Emma's hypochondriac father, the odiously prideful Mrs. Elton, the mysterious and reserved Jane Fairfax, and Miss Bates, who never stops talking. (Summary by Elizabeth Klett).

Breast Cancer Support Retreat in Florida helps train therapy horses!
After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44, I found myself struggling to keep my head above water. As a single mother of 4, astronomical medical bills, and severe loneliness and depression, there were days I did not think I wanted to go on. Had it not been for these magnificent horses, (and some amazing support of family & friends) I am not sure that I would have made it through. Having the opportunity to work with these amazing horses while going through my own cancer journey was life changing and I would like to share some hope, healing and humor, with you! If you are interested in learning more about me and what I am doing to help women survivors at the ranch, please SUBSCRIBE NOW and visit my website:
christinebravata.com
For the past 10 years, I have had the privilege of training and working with the semi-wild Florida cracker horses and cattle at the Eye of a Horse Animal Assisted Learning Program in St. Cloud, Florida. Through this unmounted experiential learning program, I have helped serve those suffering from PTSD, at risk youth, breast cancer survivors, veterans, substance abusers and those on the autism spectrum, but due to my own personal experience, my passion is now focused on helping people through my YouTube channel and offering women's horse retreats built around the equine assisted learning programs.
Through these cancer support retreats at the ranch, I incorporate horses, nature and art, in a mind, body, spirit experience that will offer some peace and tranquility in stressful times. We do groundwork with the foals, meditate, do some yoga, make pottery ( I am a potter/sculptor as well), listen to music and support one another through this journey. It's a lot of fun and super rewarding for all involved!
I hope this channel inspires you to be strong and move on, knowing that you are NOT alone!
I will post videos weekly to help anyone out there who needs to escape the worry and stress of this thing we call life. Come to the ranch with me and relax, enjoy the scenery, interact with the animals, support one another, learn and grow. We are all in this together.
Please subscribe!
And please visit eyeofahorse.com for more info and videos about some of our other programs.
My pottery AND blog can also be found on my website christinebravata.com
I look forward to hearing your stories and maybe meeting at the ranch someday! Please comment below!
With much love,
Christine

The History of Mr. Polly Audiobook by H. G. Wells | Audiobook with subtitles
A funny and touching account of the imaginative Mr. Polly who, bored and trapped in his conventional life, makes a U-turn –- and changes everything.
H.G. Wells’ early life as the son of a semi-insolvent shopkeeper and as a draper’s apprentice fueled his novels of the lower middle class: The Wheels of Chance (1896), Kipps (1905), and The History of Mr. Polly (1910). These works evoke the desperation of apprentices, clerks, and small traders in their monotonous toil behind shop counters. And, like Mr. Polly, his protagonists make a break from their mundane lives with more or less success.
H. G. Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific writer in history, general and science fiction, and politics. He was a lifelong socialist. (Summary by Adrian Praetzellis)
