Washington DC Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to DC
Things you NEED to know BEFORE you go to Washington DC. DC is often referred to as The District. You could easily spend a week in DC, especially if you want to see George Washington’s house in Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson’s house in Monticello. The City is laid out in a grid pattern with lettered streets running east-west, numbered streets running north-south. Diagonal streets — usually named after states — often intersect at circles (30 circles)
Dupont Circle is my favorite circle. Comprised of four quadrants (NE, NW, SE, and SW), which spread out from the U.S. Capitol.
Getting in
There are three Airports -- none of them actually in DC
Reagan (DCA) -- right next to DC -- connected by Metro or $20 Cab Ride
Washington Dulles (IAD)
Baltimore-Washington (BWI)
Amtrak to Union Station
Or Drive
Transportation in DC
Walk
One of the 10 of the most walkable cities in the USA
Travel + Leisure rated D.C. as the third rudest city in America,
Metro
Smart Trip Card
Capital Bike Share
175 stations across the city
Sign up for a day, or three
Taxis/Uber plentiful
Driving: Beware -- traffic is miserable and oneway streets abound
Parking is expensive -- Use parking panda
Museums
Smithsonians are free
Most on the national mall
Air and Space has 2 locations -- one by Dulles
Newseum and Spy Museum are expensive
My favorite is the Bureau of Engraving and Printing
No reservations required September 5, 2017 through March 2, 2018
Washington Monument elevator is really cool -- but it’s often broken
Best gift shops are in the museums
Government Stuff
Capitol Building or the White House, make sure to book your tickets in advance.
Capitol tour, reservations online or through your Congressional representative or senator.
Capitol Visitor Center provides a limited number of day-passes starting at 9 a.m.
White House, reserve a few months before your trip. Thru congressional representative.
Time to visit
Cherry Blossom Season
Not the summer when all the school kids are there
And the Summer is oppressively hot and humid, especially in August
And maybe not when the govt is in full swing
I like Winter -- no crowds at all
Hotels
Can be really expensive, as can parking
My favorites are the Park Hyatt and the Mayflower
Stay outside of DC in Arlington or Alexandria for cheaper hotels
Just a short metro ride in to the city
Food
The national mall and monument area has almost no food
Union Station and Le’fant plaza good for lunch, or around the white house
Avoid the Chinese food in Chinatown -- it’s all really awful
But George Bush’s favorite Chinese restaurant is just 20 minutes driving outside of DC
Peking Gourmet Inn in Fall Church -- Awesome Peking Duck
My Favorites: Potbelly
My Favorites: Moby Dick House of Kabob
My Favorites: Ben’s Chili Bowl
DC is more than just monuments and the National Mall
Get out and see the real DC
Georgetown
Penn Quarter
Adams Morgan
Smithsonian Zoo
U Street
Walk the red line

Modern Problems in Historic Cemeteries by Frances Ford
Modern Problems in Historic Cemeteries by Frances Ford
Charleston is a well loved historic city and in no small part due to its lovely churchyards which sit next to its numerous houses of worship. Known as the “Holy City,” over two dozen churches are located in the historic district of the peninsula and half of them have adjoining churchyards. Many are no longer active which has led in some part to their deterioration. Others, while active, try to balance the conservation of historic monuments with the addition of new burials and new markers. So as a conservator it has become increasingly surprising (and frightening) that it’s the newer monuments that are constantly requiring interventions to keep visitors safe.
Some level of deterioration is expected when a tablet or ledger is from Charleston’s colonial days. The earliest marker in the city still extant is most likely the Simons vault located in the Circular Churchyard, said to date to 1698-99. Many early eighteenth-century slate stones still exist in the Circular Church graveyard and in the churchyard of nearby Saint Philip’s. These stones are well documented to have come from New England since the low country of South Carolina had no resources for quarrying stone. The modern stone of choice in Charleston (as I would think is true all over the United States) is granite. Modern granite markers are evident in many Charleston colonial churchyards, including the French Huguenot Church and Saint Philip’s where internment is still allowed. In recent years it is increasingly these stones which are failing: tablets falling off of bases, large crosses wobbling and turning on a small pin, plaque markers and ledgers at grade sinking into the ground.
Are the construction techniques for modern monuments such that the safety of visitors to historic churchyards is at a greater risk? Is it the responsibility of the churches to dictate to modern monument installers a code of conduct? Is this a local issue or is it wide spread? Historic construction practice finds that markers of numerous pieces were cut or carved to fit together like puzzle pieces, each locking into the other; in the case of stone chest tombs or tablets cut with a tab to fit neatly into the opening in the base (die in socket). A die on a flat base would be connected with large iron pins and lime mortar. It is surprising that the manufacturers of today do not follow this historic example. Connection between multiple pieces can only be truly secure when pins are in place along with the adhesive. Sheer weight should not be used as a connecting mechanism.
This paper will look closely at the conservation issues now facing the historic church yards on the peninsula of Charleston, SC. Specifically looking at examples of modern monument failure, its causes and offering some solutions for the future.

In the near term obviously, one of the offshoots that we are seeing today is that the stock prices in general are going down, the financials are the worst performing group in the S&P 500, down about five percent, the S&P is down about two percent. So this has had a market reaction and now we''ll see if that is going to be an over-reaction or if there''s something that plays out over the next several days.

Goldman Sachs has been long one of the top investment banks. If you look back over the last couple of years of this financial crisis we went through, they certainly were able to come out of it in a better fashion than Bear Sterns or Lehman did. They have got a reputation for having very, very aggressive trading and very, very smart people working there, that''s long been the case. They have had decades of the reputation of being one of the top investment banks and they certainly seem to have come out of the financial crisis in better shape than some of their competitors did.
Washington DC - April 16 2010
8. Various of Goldman Sachs building (200 West Street)
STORYLINE:
The US government has accused investment bank Goldman Sachs & Co. of defrauding investors by failing to disclose conflicts of interest in mortgage investments it sold as the housing market was collapsing.
The Securities and Exchange Commission said in a civil complaint on Friday that Goldman failed to disclose that one of its clients helped create - and then bet against - subprime mortgage securities that Goldman sold to other investors.
The SEC said the fraud, a blow to the reputation of Wall Street''s most powerful firm, was orchestrated in 2007 by a Goldman vice president then in his late 20''s.
The employee, Fabrice Tourre, has since been promoted to executive director of Goldman Sachs International in London.
Tourre, the SEC said, boasted to a friend that he was able to put such deals together as the mortgage market was unravelling in early 2007.
In an email to the friend, he described himself as the fabulous Fab standing in the middle of all these complex, highly leveraged, exotic trades he created without necessarily understanding all of the implications of those monstrosities!!!
Two European banks that bought the securities lost nearly one (b) billion dollars, the SEC said. The agency is seeking to recoup profits reaped on the deal.
Goldman Sachs denied the allegations. In a statement, it called the SEC''s charges completely unfounded in law and fact and said it will contest them.
The SEC (Securities and Exchanges Commission) is saying Goldman was deceptive and misleading in the way they marketed a particular product, Art Hogan, Chief Market Analyst at Jeffries and Co, said.
Goldman, founded more than 140 years ago, built a reputation as a trusted adviser to its investment banking clients.

'Waltzing Matilda' sung in honour of Aus guests at WHouse
(21 Sep 2019) A glittering crowd gathered under the stars in the White House Rose Garden on Friday, as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania hosted Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his wife, Jenny, for an open-air state dinner.
Guests, including members of Congress, White House staff and an Australian delegation that included pro golfer Greg Norman, were seated at a mix of round and rectangular tables draped in yellow and green tablecloths in tribute to Australia's national colours.
Below an illuminated White House, Melania - who had organised the event - thanked all involved for an incredible job before introducing a special military band performance of the famous Australian song 'Waltzing Matilda.'

SUMMARY
=======
Folk music includes traditional folk music and the genre that evolved from it during the 20th-century folk revival. Some types of folk music may be called world music. Traditional folk music has been defined in several ways: as music transmitted orally, music with unknown composers, or music performed by custom over a long period of time. It has been contrasted with commercial and classical styles. The term originated in the 19th century, but folk music extends beyond that.
Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This process and period is called the (second) folk revival and reached a zenith in the 1960s. This form of music is sometimes called contemporary folk music or folk revival music to distinguish it from earlier folk forms. Smaller, similar revivals have occurred elsewhere in the world at other times, but the term folk music has typically not been applied to the new music created during those revivals. This type of folk music also includes fusion genres such as folk rock, folk metal, and others. While contemporary folk music is a genre generally distinct from traditional folk music, in U.S. English it shares the same name, and it often shares the same performers and venues as traditional folk music.

I want to thank the President for the eight years that have afforded us an opportunity of representing the Irish people here and as always, we've had a very fruitful discussion on a range of issues. STORYLINE:
Recognising the role of US President George W Bush in helping all sides in Northern Ireland come to the peace table, Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern praised the president for his help when he visited Washington on Monday.
Ahern and a delegation of top leaders from Ireland are in the United States to wish the president and Congressional leaders a happy St. Patrick's Day.
The Irish prime minister said there were times when he wondered whether the peace process would ever come to a successful conclusion.
He noted that each time he requested help, the US president would listen and act in whatever manner he could.
Bush, for his part, recognised the contributions the Irish have made to the United States.
He also promised to send a high-level delegation to Ireland in May for a trade exposition.
Before the traditional presentation of the bowl of shamrocks, the two leaders met in the Oval Office of the White House.
Both men acknowledged the mutual friendship of the two countries.
Following the ceremony at the White House, both leaders were scheduled to go to Capitol Hill for the traditional St. Patrick's Day luncheon with Congressional leaders.
Across America, there were St Patrick's Day parades - the biggest probably in New York where a seemingly non-stop parade of marchers, step dancers, men in kilts, smiles and green regaled the crowds.
Everybody's Irish on St. Paddy's Day, she said.
