Tauranga Elms Mission Station
Tauranga's best kept secret. A collection of historic buildings and beautiful gardens just a few minutes from downtown.
The Elms Historic House is the oldest European heritage site in the Bay of Plenty, and is an essential stop for all visitors to Tauranga.
From this traditional English home, Maori were given the opportunity to learn about Christianity, and were educated in reading and writing, as well as agricultural and domestic skills.
The gardens are free to visit (no dogs, no smoking) and the buildings are just $5 entry for adults, free for children.

Tauranga is a harbourside city in the Bay of Plenty region on New Zealand's North Island. It hosts historic buildings like the Elms Mission Station, an 1847 Georgian-style home. A bridge over the harbour connects Tauranga to Mount Maunganui, a beach town with hot saltwater pools and an extinct namesake volcano with winding walking paths. Offshore is the active volcano White Island, accessible by helicopter or boat.

Tauranga has a humid, subtropical climate with mild winters (Jun–Sep) and warm, humid summers (Dec–Feb). The most popular time to visit is during the spring and summer from Oct–Apr. Annual events include the colorful Sikh Parade (Jan), the National Jazz Festival (Easter) and the New Zealand International Film Festival (Aug–Sep). Visitors in late Dec can take part in the popular New Year's Eve celebrations atop Mount Maunganui.

Tauranga, New Zealand. Dive Crescent to Marsh St, Rob's Path, as at 17 July 2010.mpg
Since 2002 85 year old Robert Smith of Tauranga has been petitioning Tauranga City Council to remove the filth and create a path from Dive Crescent to Marsh Street. This will provide for safe access to the Mission Cemetery and or points West (The Elms, Chapel St) with no road crossings, no steps required.
Elected members agree in or about 2007, and then the fun begins with the clear message from staff that the provision of this path isn't compatable with their thinking.
Estimates of $75,000 and upwards are presented to elected members by staff, coupled with 1-3 year delays for funding and consultation. Path MUST be accessible by wheelchair (apparently not so elsewhere in the city), despite being a path geotec engineers reports, Historic Places Trust, IWI, the tooth fairy ...
Elected members support my resolution that a path be provided with community input in consultation with staff. Maximum ratepayer funding to be $17,000.
Borrowed a 1.5t mini excavator and 3 hours later, Saturday 17 July 2010, the site has been cleared, scrapped and partially shaped and is accessible. 85 year old Bob is up and down like a rabbit! Cost to date $00.

McLaren Falls,
Tauranga New Zealand
McLaren Falls Park is 190 hectares of parkland set alongside Lake McLaren and is just ten minutes by car, from Tauranga.
The park is popular for camping, fishing, kayaking, disc golf course, wedding photos, picnics, bush walks and summertime concerts. It is also home to one of the best botanical collections of trees in New Zealand.
One of the highlights of the park is the waterfall track where you can see glow worms after dusk. Enjoy a short, easy stroll to the picturesque waterfall and spot the glow worms on either side of the track. Part of the waterfall track is also wheelchair and mobility scooter friendly.
