Syria | Rehabilitation of Raqqa’s gardens
In an effort to rehabilitate the green spaces in Raqqa, north of Syria, the Environment and Gardens Commission in the People's Municipality continues to rehabilitate gardens by planting them with trees, fixing medians and digging tree basins. This comes after the war destroyed around 75% of the gardens in the city.

Environmental Science Museum and Interactive Garden

The Project Narrative:
Public awareness of environmental sciences is a key success factor in combating pollution in urban societies. The need for facilities to spread this awareness becomes more demanding in larger cities. This project presents a plan for both an environmental science museum and an interactive garden in “Kiwan Land”, an unbuilt area close to Damascus city center.
The museum is divided by topics into five main sections: botany, animal science, aquarium, climatology, and renewable energy. These sections provide the visitors with basic information about these topics (such as wild species, tropical areas, and biofuel), and about the major challenges and threats related to them (such as endangered species, global warming, and scarce energy resources).
The design of the museum and the garden is based on Voronoi cells. Cells are the building unit of all creatures and were hence adopted as the main metaphor in the design. Voronoi diagrams can divide arbitrary regions into cells using a simple mathematical approach. Their organic look mimics many structures in natural life such as organic cells, leaves, and animal skin. The interactive garden is divided by topics into five main zones: water energy, wind energy, solar nenergy, reserve area, and the interactive railway. These first three zones aim to show renewable energy sources in action. The reserve area exhibits a variety of plants originally found in Kiwan Land. The “interactive railway” reactivates the abandoned railway for transportation inside Kiwan Land.

For Syrian businesswoman Roula Ali-Adeeb, her war-battered Damask Rose business has finally taken a turn for the better after engaging in a booming Chinese market.
With China's second import expo #CIIE in sight, the 53-year-old said she looks forward to participating in it.

The project installed solar engines for pumping irrigation water to a 60.000 m2 land near on the side of the Euphrates River, in addition to establishing an environment awareness center for spreading awareness among farmers, investors, and decision makers about uses of solar energy in agriculture.
The project was conducted by the farmers association in Mre'ieh, Deir Ezzor, in cooperation with local experts from private and public sector, including the National Center for Energy Research at the Ministry of Electricity. Furthermore, the project cooperated with vendors of related equipment and international research entities in the field of renewable energy. It was implemented by a local workforce, after receiving proper training on management and maintenance of the project, under supervision from the above mentioned parties.
Environmentalists Clean Up River Barada

The Barada River, once a source of life for the people of Damascus, is now dried up and polluted but a group of young environmentalists are out to change that. Some fifty volunteers were so concerned to see the Barada becoming a dump for garbage and sewage that they organised a clean-up campaign.
The River Barada means everything to the people of Syria. Without the river, Damascus would not have been the oldest inhabited city in the world, said one member, Issam Habbal.
The activists plan to make the clean-up an annual campaign but want to do much more to raise awareness and get official support.

Colin Kelley: Food and Water Vulnerability in a Changing Climate
Arid regions like the Middle East are particularly sensitive to shifts in climate, and changes in rainfall patterns can put stress on critical water supplies and food systems. Colin Kelley, an associate research scientist with the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, studies regional climate in such areas in order to improve our ability to make forecasts, plan ahead and become more resilient to drought and other climate shifts. A study he and colleagues wrote in 2015 contends that a record drought in Syria, probably driven by man-made climate change, may have contributed to the unrest that led to the current Syrian civil war.
In the latest video in a series on Earth Institute people, Kelley talks about his work to help countries around the world prepare better and become more resilient to climate change.

She is in conversation with author, journalist and artist Molly Crabapple, who has drawn in and reported from Guantanamo Bay, Abu Dhabi's migrant labour camps, and in Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, the West Bank and Iraqi Kurdistan.

Car bomb detonated by rebels in Syria

Footage appears to show rebels apparently detonating a car bomb in an attack against a stronghold of the shabbiha militia. The video, which cannot be verified, was posted on social media websites on Thursday. Another claims to show rebels shelling government tanks in a hilly part of the town of Nawa.
