Shenandoah Valley
Late October and I went to the Shenandoah Valley to video tape the fall colors, but was frustrated because everything is still green. Blame it on global warming. Anyway, I took some aerial footage anyway and added some appropriate music for this legendary river.
Theme and Variations on Semper Paratus
Theme and Variations on Semper Paratus, by Matthew Parunak

The official song of the United States Coast Guard, Semper Peratus, or “Always Ready,” pays homage to the service motto, and is usually heard only as part of a medley of service songs. This work for solo tuba and brass band sets out to give this melody center stage, showcased by that sometimes overlooked foundation of military bands, the tuba. North Carolina based composer Matthew Parunak has given the tuba a moment in the spotlight, with the soloist performing a flashy series of graceful gymnastics, from the lowest to the highest notes on the instrument. Listeners might hear a nod to our nation’s other military branches along the way, as the piece celebrates the energy and exuberance of the military wind band’s history, and that of the United States Coast Guard, founded in 1790. Soloist, Joanna Ross Hersey, was a member of the United States Coast Guard Band, stationed at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, serving as Principal Tubist. This work is available with wind or brass band accompaniment, visit to purchase.

Pete Meechan composed Flight in 2018 for the Samson County Middle School Honor Band Festival, at the request of Vevlyn Lowe, band director of Sampson Middle School in Clinton, North Carolina. Working with the Simple Gifts Foundation, Pete was asked to compose a work that had a North Carolina connection, and which would feature tuba soloist Joanna Ross Hersey. As North Carolina played a large part in the war effort, hosting a massive ship-building industry, as well as large military bases, military planes were common sights during the war era. Many of these planes were flown by women. While women were not allowed to fly in combat in either the American or Allied forces, they filled an important role back at home. More than one thousand women became Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPs), stationed at Camp Davis and in Asheville in North Carolina, including women of color. These women ferried planes, completed testing and training missions, and shuttled people and cargo. Like their African American male colleagues at Tuskegee, these pilots were breaking stereotypes and redefining the military. For the work’s premiere, Pete traveled to North Carolina and worked with the students before the concert, conducted by Dr. Arris Golden. For more information, visit Pete’s website for solo tuba and wind band or brass band versions.

SUMMARY
=======
West Virginia ( (listen)) is a state located in the Appalachian region in the Southern United States and is also considered to be a part of the Middle Atlantic States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 41st largest state by area, and is ranked 38th in population. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, after the American Civil War had begun. Delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key border state during the war. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states admitted to the Union during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada). While a portion of its residents held slaves, most of the residents were yeomen farmers, and the delegates provided for gradual abolition of slavery in the new state Constitution.
The Census Bureau and the Association of American Geographers classify West Virginia as part of the Southern United States. However the Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies West Virginia as a part of the Mid-Atlantic. The northern panhandle extends adjacent to Pennsylvania and Ohio, with the West Virginia cities of Wheeling and Weirton just across the border from the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, while Bluefield is less than 70 miles (110 km) from North Carolina. Huntington in the southwest is close to the states of Ohio and Kentucky, while Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle region are considered part of the Washington metropolitan area, in between the states of Maryland and Virginia. The unique position of West Virginia means that it is often included in several geographical regions, including the Mid-Atlantic, the Upland South, and the Southeastern United States. It is the only state that is entirely within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission; the area is commonly defined as Appalachia.The state is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hunting.
Jonathan R. Alger, JMU President-elect
Only five presidents have served James Madison University in its 103-year history. So it was particularly momentous when the Board of Visitors voted on November 28, 2011 to approve Jonathan R. Alger as the university's sixth president. In his acceptance speech, Alger said, James Madison University stands at the threshold of an exciting new era at the beginning of its second century. Alger then addressed every group connected to the JMU community and said to students in particular, I look forward to working with you to 'be the change' and to make the Madison Experience the best it can possibly be.
This excerpt contains Alger's full acceptance speech, which occurred on JMU's campus in the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts.
