Christmas Day Swim at Dublin's Forty Foot 2018
I made a return to Dublin's annual Christmas Day tradition of swimming in the Irish Sea, again this time at the Forty Foot in Sandycove.
It wasn't a bright and sunny day like in 2014: but it was a calm morning on the Irish Sea, by 10am there were already hundreds of people there and the place was pretty much full.
Last time I was filming on a Garmin VIRB, this time it's the GoPro Hero 7 Black, it is waterproof so no need for a special housing.
Two dips into the cold water, just like last time and plenty of footage of swimmers jumping in and the atmosphere in the Forty Foot on Christmas morning.
Overheard from a regular swimmer that it was colder than usual in the water, that might have been heightened by the high air temperature.
People swim at the Forty Foot and other places right around Ireland every day of the year, Christmas Day is when the big numbers come out and charities do some collecting for various good causes.
Enjoy the view.
The Forty Foot and its dedicated swimmers
For over 250 years the Forty Foot has had committed swimmers brave all forms of weather to swim every day.
We visited the community there and spoke to them about why they keep coming back to the water.

Huge Wave at the 40 Foot, Sandycove, Dublin, Ireland
Footage from stormy weather on 9th November 2010 at the 40 foot bathing place in Sandycove, Dublin, Ireland. Got a vantage point high up on a wall - but nearly not high enough, when a couple of *huge* waves came in of almost tsunami-like proportions. Ended up being pretty scarey and soaked to the skin. Hail the power of Mother Nature!
A warm welcome from – Dublin's Forty Foot
The Forty Foot along the scenic Dublin Bay is one of Dublin's most famous swimming spots. Immortalised in James Joyce's Ulysses and loved by generations of the city's swimmers, the Forty Foot is an an ideal – and pretty cold! – destination for those eager who wish to enjoy the waters of the Irish Sea.

Christmas Day Swim, Dublin's Forty Foot
Swimming in the Irish Sea on Christmas Day is a popular activity, Dublin's Forty Foot is probably the best known of these swims on the 25th of December in Ireland.
I took a brief dip in the icy waters for the first time this year and made some underwater footage while swimming about in the chilly sea, it was packed and at times there was a queue to get in and out of the sea, said to reach a maximum temperature of 14C in early autumn.
See for more.

Early on a chilly March morning 3 filmmakers set out to make a short documentary film in 5 days. They received their genre and theme from an internet café, and got some production assistance from a friend. The team had two cameras, a wet suit and a lot of coffee.
Forty Foot is about the older groups of mostly Irish locals who swim in Sandycove every day. The film tells the history of the place through the personal stories and characteristics of the featured swimmers. More than a film about them braving the elements everyday, this is a film about having a great and surprising spirit in the face of aging, death and economic hardship. It shows a classless section of older Irish nationals in a refreshing, encouraging and a completely unknown light to foreign eyes
