London Study Abroad Ep 5: Shakespeare Globe, Stonehenge, Brighton
Standing up for 3 hours of Shakespeare was an experience I won't forget. And even cooler I got soaked (literally) in the wonder that is Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. I finished the weekend in sunny Brighton, and was very surprised to find that their beach was far rockier than Stonehenge

Globe Trekker travellers Ian Wright, Megan McCormick, Jonathan Atherton, and Justine Shapiro travel the length and breadth of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Irelandimage: Justine takes part in a 1066 Battle of Hastings re-enactment to experience the best of the countries’ heritage, history, nature, festivals, food and drink and eccentric traditions! Our team start off by looking at the monarchy in different periods of England’s history; Ian visits Windsor Castle whilst Jonathan learns about the bloody and gory past of the Tower of London. Next Ian learns about aristocratic schooling at Eton – England’s poshest school and Princes William and Harry’s alma mater – while Justine meets the eccentric Marquis of Bath at his grand residence, Longleat House.
Justine then travels to one of the oldest and most remarkable landmarks in England, Stonehenge. Dating back 5,000 years no-one knows how or why this giant stone formation was created. What is indisputable is that it is awe inspiring! She also visits a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, one of the most defining moments of English history when the French were victorious over the English. Meanwhile, Ian takes part in a re-enactment of a different sort –image: Stonehenge, Wiltshire, Englandmedieval jousting – before checking out Canterbury Cathedral, the site of the bloody murder of Thomas Beckett.
Megan and Justine catch one of England’s most celebrated festivals, Bonfire Night, when Guy Fawkes’ unsuccessful gunpowder plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament is remembered. Ian witnesses spectacular fireworks and a flotilla of ships in Portsmouth on England’s south coast as a celebration of Nelson’s victory over the French at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
England’s expansion of the Empire during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 19th century opened the way for a Multicultural Britain. Our travellers explore the diverse ethnicity of Britain today – Jonathan visits the East End of London known for its Bengali community and Brixton‘s image: HMS Victory battleship in Portsmouthbustling Caribbean-influenced streets whilst Megan checks out a Hindu temple in the North of the capital and joins in the fun at the world famous Notting Hill Carnival in London before heading up to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival. Meanwhile Ian parties in the mud at the biggest music festival in England – Glastonbury.
Ian thinks he has stumbled across the perfect picture-postcard village when he arrives in Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds. He takes part in one of the oldest and strangest sporting events in the English calendar, the Cotswolds Olympics, and discovers that he’s never going to be a champion ‘shin kicker’!
Ian dresses up in 15th century garb when he attends a jousting festival at Berkeley Castle. Donning chain mail, helmet, lance and shield, he gingerly mounts his horse to pitch battle against the Black Knight.
image: Snowdonia National Park, WalesOur travellers give tips on the best ways of getting around; from London’s black cabs and underground tube to cycling in Northern Ireland and riding aboard an historic steam train in Scotland. Although the United Kingdom doesn’t hold the best reputation for food, our travellers tuck in to all manner of delightful and doubtful food, from the cooked English breakfast to deep fried chocolate bars, jellied eels and Cornish pasties.
Strange sports are sampled, from dog racing in East London to grand horse racing at Ascot, bizarre road bowling in Northern Ireland and the Highland Games in Scotland.
Our travellers complete their journeys by taking in some of the UK’s most stunning vistas, from atop the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland’s Giants Causeway and Wales’ Snowdonia.

UK: LONDON TO BRIGHTON VINTAGE CAR RALLY UPDATE
Eng/Ger/Nat
Hundred of vintage cars set out Sunday on one of the world's oldest and most famous motor rallies - from London to the British seaside town of Brighton.
Motorists from across the globe converged on London's Hyde Park for the event - first held exactly 100 years ago.
The rally includes some of the most ancient cars ever built. Among the drivers - Britain's Prince Michael, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth.
Called to order by a town crier, drivers lined up early Sunday for a rally that recalled the glory days of motoring at the dawn of the 20th century.
Amost 700 vehicles took part - none built later than the year 1904.
The 57-mile race from London to Brighton was first staged in 1896 - and few of the cars here today would have looked out of place 100 years ago.
Prince Michael of Kent set the scene, at the wheel of a De Dietrich model built in 1903.
SOUNDBITE:
It's a very historic moment. And the wonderful thing is that in the early days, 100 years ago, there were only 33 of these cars. This time there are 680 of them.
SUPERCAPTION: Prince Michael of Kent
The rally officially began at 7.30 in the morning - the first cars hissing and chugging their way out of Hyde Park.
Many drivers had been up much of the night to prepare their vehicles. This steam- powered car, fuelled by wood and coal, is the oldest working car in the world:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We will do our best, its a long way and its a lot to ask of the car which was really only designed to do about 30 miles in one go and we are looking at double that today, but we will do our best. It is not cooking particularly well at the moment and we are looking of a nice strong breeze to put some draft in the boiler so we can get up speed and we are struggling already.
SUPERCAPTION: Tim Moore, vintage car owner
The rally attracted entrants from as far afield as Angola, Brazil and New Zealand - although the largest foreign contingent was American.
Ray Hovey, from New Jersey, drove his cherished 1900 Panhard Levassor:
SOUNDBITE:
It is our third time on the tour. This car has been on the trip three times and its a very special car to the United States. It was originally purchased in 1900 for a man who lived in California and been in New Jersery since 1920 and we have just come down at the last few years.
SUPERCAPTION: Ray Hovey, U-S vintage car owner
Germany fielded some impressive early Daimler and Mercedes cars - including this 1903 Mercedes model owned by Berthold Ruckwarth:
SOUNDBITE: (German)
I'm here because I'm an enthusiast for old cars. I've been doing this since 1968 every year. But this is the first time I've taken this particular car here. I've just finished restoring it.
SUPERCAPTION: Berthold Ruckwarth, German vintage car owner
There were so many cars that it took around three hours for all of them to leave Hyde Park and enter the London traffic, waved off by thousands of onlookers.
The route of the rally took the cars past Buckingham Palace, home of Queen Elizabeth - then south through the London suburbs towards Brighton - recreating a scene from a century ago.

A Weekend in Brighton | Everything to See & Do
We have arrived in one of our favourite spots in the UK - Brighton! and we have finally got some beautiful weather here in England - the sun is out yayyy
First up we give you a room tour of our very cool accommodation - the Artist Residence where every room has a unique look to it before heading off to first coffee spot - the Flour Pot (highly recommend for coffee addicts like ourselves)
Next we head to the Brighton Lanes trying to find our brunch spot Lost in the Lanes which was a fitting name because we literally got lost in the lanes trying to find it.
After an incredible breakfast we headed up the i360 tower to get insane views of Brighton from high above before doing some more thrift shop shopping as we made our way to the Komedia comedy lounge to watch a stand up show.
The next day we hand a bagel on the beach (Jess's dream) before going to Choccywoccydoodah to have a hot chocolate straight out of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory.
We ended our time at the Brighton Pier to try and win Jess a pug...we failed.
