DUKE & DUCHESS of UK and CROWN PRINCE & PRINCESS of DENMARK FEED CHILDREN (UNICEF)
MaximsNewsNetwork: 12 November 2011 -- Copenhagen, Denmark, East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya): UNICEF: United Nations Childrens Fund: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, United Kingdom, recently made a special visit to UNICEF's Emergency Supply Centre in Denmark, where they were joined by the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark to promote the United Nations Childrens Fund to drive to feed children in East Africa during the famine in the Horn of Africa, more than 320,000 children so severely malnourished that they are at imminent risk of death unless they get urgent help.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a special visit to the UNICEF global supply centre in Copenhagen that includes food, water, special nutritional supplies for the most malnourished children, vaccines, education materials and emergency medical kits.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were accompanied on the visit by the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark where they received a briefing on the desperate situation in the region from Peter Hailey, Chief of Nutrition for UNICEF in Somalia.
They then saw for themselves how the life-saving aid supplies are sourced and packed, ready to be sent to East Africa.
They met four packing staff who showed them how different medical provisions - including essential medicines and emergency surgical equipment - are packed.
Both Royal couples joined the staff on the packing line and helped to pack boxes of emergency health kits, each of which will provide life-saving supplies to over 1000 people.
The Duke and Duchess and the Crown Prince and Princess then toured the warehouse, seeing the huge variety of supplies that are sent to emergencies around the world, including ready-to-use therapeutic food for severely malnourished children under five years old and supplementary food to support-families, emergency health kits, vaccines and water supplies including water purification tablets.
At the end of their visit the Duke of Cambridge said An incredible amount is being done. UNICEF is leading the way and doing a fantastic job, but sadly there's lots more still to do, and that's why we're here today
The Duchess of Cambridge talked more about the purpose of their visit, saying We really hope to put the spotlight back on this crisis.
The Duke of Cambridge then added a heartfelt appeal: Anyone who can do anything to help, please do.
The Duke and Duchess went on to Copenhagen Airport to see the supplies being loaded onto flights provided by British Airways and UPS, bound for Nairobi.
To respond to the remaining needs of children in East Africa for 2011, UNICEF still requires $40 million. The financial needs for 2012 are $402.8 million, including $300 million for UNICEF Somalia, in order to ensure that provision of life saving therapeutic and supplementary feeding can continue. About Christ's Hospital
Information and location
A London-born School, Christ’s Hospital moved to its current 1,200 acre campus in 1902. The School was founded in response to one of the Bishop of London’s sermons.
Close to the quaint town of Horsham, which older students are free to visit during their free time, there is also swift access to Brighton and other coastal resorts, London and the South Downs National Park. The School has its own train station, Christ’s Hospital, which is on the main line to London (Victoria) and Gatwick Airport.
Boarding and three-week blocks
There are eighteen boarding houses on the School’s site, 16 of which are single sex while the other two are co-educational. Married couples, who often have their own families, look after each of the houses.
Juniors share rooms with up to three others. Spacious common rooms with snooker tables, airy kitchens and a phone room are in each of the houses. Senior houses are almost luxurious, and reminiscent of university halls of residence, with big windows, a sink in each room, neatly designed kitchens, a small library with a piano, expansive communal spaces and bowls of fruit.
The School operates in three-blocks before a leave weekend. Many children decide to stay for this weekend and pair up with a friend and stay with their family.
Central to the School’s ethos are Chapel services. The Chapel has enough space for 840 pupils to come together on Tuesdays and Sundays.
Academic-related issues
The campus is divided up into subject blocks, all of which have plenty of space and equipment. New science and language labs are particularly impressive.
Junior class sizes go up to 25, down to 20 in core subjects at GCSE level and fewer in option groups. A-level and IB courses typically have 10 or 11 students in a group.
The School opted to take on the IB diploma in 2011. The uptake is steadily growing. The average is 35 points.
GCSE and A-level exam results speak for themselves. In recent years, several students from Asia have achieved 12 or 11 A* grades at GCSE level, while 39 A-level students gained three A grades or better in 2014. On average, 10 pupils each year are accepted to read courses at Oxbridge.
Co-curricular pursuits and sport
The School takes pride in its diverse co-curricular programme with an enormous range of societies, clubs and activities to choose from. These include chess, debating and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is also popular. School trips in recent years have taken pupils to The Himalayas and New York City.
The main sports are hockey, netball, football, cricket and tennis. Swimming and squash are also strong.
Facilities
In addition to the above-mentioned boarding houses and Upper Sixth Form residences, the School also has an art school, modern sports centre, music school and its own purpose-built 500-seat theatre which is modelled on Shakespeare’s Globe.

Why ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes loves New York - Latest News
Why ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes loves New York - Latest News Lord Julian Fellowes, the master magician behind “Downton Abbey,” just finished the American film “The Chaperone.” “All shot here,” said the Brit. “I love New York. I’m tempted to get a tiny flat and live in New York. Some cities you must know someone to survive. Here not. It’s museums, theaters, libraries to experience. I visit the Empire State building top, the Observation Deck, at 11 p.m., right before lights get shut off, just to view the city. It’s magical. “Forget traffic. In crowded London you sit in taxis forever to get nowhere. At least here you can move. “This movie happened after Elizabeth McGovern read about Kansas’ rebellious Louise Brooks, who came here with a chaperone and became a 1920s film star. Same period as ‘Downton.’ I write about strong women, and she lives in London so she brought me the book. It was seven years ago. We went back and forth, but I seized on the idea.” Elizabeth: “I read this story and a lightbulb went off. I also saw a good role for me in this. I even produced it and, frightened every day, I know nothing about producing. Nothing. Fortunately, courageous financiers were willing to help. “It’s all New York. Shooting everywhere — universities, parks, Staten Island, downtown, Brooklyn — was difficult. Controlling traffic was a nightmare. New Yorkers don’t care. Taxis run right through your shot.” “The Chaperone” opens Friday. A “quick trip to Australia,” then “I’m in ‘The Starry Messenger’ play in London’s West End with Matthew Broderick.” As we spoke, her diamond earrings and bracelet twinkled. “Chopard. Loaners.” Director Michael Engler: “The parks were difficult. Background noise. Pigeons, squirrels. Can’t close off certain areas. Can’t get the permits. Frederick Olmsted designed Central Park and Prospect Park, which he called his masterpiece, so pretending it’s Central Park, that’s where we shot. “Yonkers train station became Grand Central’s supposed arrival scene. Shutting down the street we put in some early ’20s trains from an antique car place. People collect them. They’re stored in garages.” A movie night at the museum As Anna Baryshnikov, Renée Fleming, Nanette Lepore, Gay Talese, Tituss Burgess and Dana Ivey, crowded in to see the preview of “The Chaperone” at MoMA on Monday night, Blythe Danner said: “I play Elizabeth’s mother. I don’t even know how I got the role. Maybe because I’m around a long time, which means people like me are always offered Alzheimer’s parts. At a Tony lunch with Julian, he offered it to me. “This is set in 1922. Wardrobe actually gave me an old costume that already had my name in it. I’d even worn the thing 30 years ago, and it still fit.” Lord Fellowes: “This is about young love and old obsessions. One moment it happens. Next moment it doesn’t happen. Everybody experiences that.” So did he personally experience that? “I’m not going to tell you.” From my French connection A friend in France sent this with accompanying photos: “Paris riots are not abo
