The Fishpond Hotel – History:
Dating back many hundreds of years, the Fishpond Hotel was originally a coaching inn. It has always been a meeting place for dancing and drinking, as it still is today. It’s fantastic ballroom was the main meeting place in the area before the Grand Pavilion was built in 1910. Over the road is the original fishpond, set in the pavilion car park, which used to be the stable block belonging to the hotel. These were demolished to make way for the Grand Pavilion. Horse and Carriage trips would run from the Fishpond Hotel to Dovedale and many other tourist destinations around the Peak District.
The Fishpond Hotel – Haunting:
The hotel is said to be haunted by many ghosts. Andrew Elson, Haunted Company’s in-house psychic medium recently visited the premises to speak to the staff and see what he could find. Andrew picked up on soldiers from the First World War wandering the building, and a boy who haunts the downstairs pool room. The Ballroom holds many spirits, including ladies dancing. The staff have also reported voices shouting, only to discover that there is no one around.
The Grand Pavilion – History:
Built in 1910 on the site of the old stables belonging to the Fishpond Hotel, the Grand Pavilion was originally called the Kursal. It’s purpose was to provide a welcome meeting place and entertainments venue for the many tourists visiting Matlock Bath as a result of it’s thermal springs, caverns and local Peak District attractions. It has hosted many things from dancing to tea parties and theatre shows, and more recently has been used as a concert venue, ice-skating rink and nightclub. Now owned by the Friends of the Pavilion Group, it is a charity with the aim of restoring the building to it’s former glory.
The Grand Pavilion – Haunting:
Matlock Bath is one of the most haunted villages in Derbyshire. Most buildings tell their own story and non more so than the Grand Pavilion. Reported to have several hauntings within the building, from children running around the corridors, a lady waiting for her husbands return from the war, and Mr Buxton with his springer spaniel dog. Another gentleman spirit is rumoured to make undesired advances to the ladies. In the Dome at the very top of the building lurk the spirits of two workmen who were killed when the Pavilion was being built, and are reported to throw things around. Lots of footsteps, breathing noises and unexplained sounds have also been reported.
