Outback Gateway and Australian Explorers
Visit Laverton the gateway to the Outback Way, Australia's longest short cut. An adventure 4WD route from Laverton to Boulia in Queensland via Uluru and Yulara in NT. Be sure to stop for a few days in Laverton to get supplies, permits and visit the Great Beyond Visitor Centre.
Australian Outback Adventure .Episode 10: 'WA BORDER and DUNCAN ROAD'
In this episode I finally reach the WA border,six and half days of straight driving since leaving Melbourne.

The Indian Pacific has it's scheduled stop at Cook, on the Nullabor Plain enroute from Sydney to Perth. The train stops here to take on fuel as Pacific National does not do in line refuelling on this train, possibly due to the status of passenger train and excess flammable liquids being hauled in the consist? Also a locomotive crew change is also facilitated as Pacific National has a staff barracks consisting of a number of portable dongas at Cook. Cook was once a thriving railway town in the days of Australian National with well over 200 people living in the town, a school, staff club, post office, medical clinic and recreation centre complete with tennis courts and a swimming pool (filled in with dirt) all existed prior to Pacific National taking over and are now closed. There was even a small souvenir shop at Cook which catered to the Indian Pacific stop over where passengers could pick up some souvenirs and even mail off postcards, even that has closed. Now only a caretaker and his family plus a couple of locomotive fuellers live at Cook (freighters also stop at Cook for fuel and crew changes), plus transient train crews in/out partaking in between train rest periods. With an NR class having around a 10,000 litre fuel tank it would not be a cheap top up at Cook. There is also a small aircraft runway behind the recreation club for the RFDS to use in case of a medical emergency arising. Apart from the Indian Pacific passengers taking a stroll during the 30 odd minute stop over other visitors by road are not encouraged nor welcome. Have a look on You Tube for a video of Cook when it was under Australian National, well worth watching when compared to today.

Australia is huge and still relatively unpopulated. There's a reason for this. The reason is rooted in the fact that Australia has a very old surface. The Bungle Bungles formed some 360 million years ago is not a geographical spot where many people are going to be able to provide food, water and shelter for themselves. That's just one example. Here's another:
My road trip with John Tattersall from Perth to Lake Ballard with stops in Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, The Broad Arrow Tavern, Ora Banda and Menzies. Antony Gormley placed 51 pieces of sculptures which represent casts taken from residents of Menzies, making Lake Ballard one hell of an art exhibit. Sorry about the wind drowning out my excellent commentary on Lake Ballard itself.
Suffice to say, Western Australia is an awesome exhibit of its own. Its flora and fauna have an amazing resilience to them. I include the citizens of Australia in this description. You see them depicted, out on the lake, under the moonlight. The starlit skies are to die for. The weather can be harsh and unpredictable. The flies, as you may be able to detect in the film, are ubiquitous during the daylight hours, but seem to disappear as the Sun sets. There's a lovely tinge of wild and dangerous when you're out there in your swag listening to the wind, looking up through your insect screen.
Think of a vast, empty, hot, sparsely populated sunny landscape and there you have it: Western Australia and its people depicted as a work of art on dry salt lake. Makes you want some cool, clear water...
