In my series What to see and do in Greece in 16 days, we spent three days in Greece's second city: Thessaloniki. The Roman Agora at Thessaloniki is a worthwhile attraction, especially if you like ancient history.

Migrants seek shelter in Thessaloniki's ancient walls
(26 Feb 2018) Walls were first built to defend this city more than 2-thousand years ago, and have been extended, reinforced, and rebuilt over centuries by its rulers from the Romans to the Ottoman Empire.
Cutting through parts of modern Thessaloniki, they are mostly visited by history lovers, or tourists looking for a panoramic view of Greece's second largest city.
For Muhammed Adeel they provide survival.
The 24-year-old Pakistani man has created a makeshift home in the stone chambers built into the walls.
Formerly protected cannon positions, they are now filled with used food packaging, filthy blankets, and rolled-up mattresses.
Everyone has dream for his parents which are in Pakistan. And that's why we are coming here for our future. But we have no work, no home, nothing else, he said after spending a near-freezing night in the dome-shaped casemate.
European countries cracked down on mass migration 15 months ago, leaving tens of thousands of refugees and migrants in limbo in Greece, confined to its eastern islands or in mainland camps.
Adeel and many others hoped to evade the authorities and pay smugglers to reach central Europe.
Instead, his money and hope ran out in Thessaloniki where homeless migrants number in the hundreds, unable to seek help for fear of deportation.
Destitute migrants also seek shelter in abandoned buildings or open spaces used by local homeless people, taking care to arrive and leave during the hours of darkness to avoid detection.
Greek aid volunteer Elena Stamatoukou, from the charity SolidarityNow, said the NGO received requests for help from 289 people in Thessaloniki in December.
Adeel said he paid smugglers 2,500 US dollars to travel from Turkey to Thessaloniki, a trip that involves crossing a heavily-policed river that separates the two countries and a six-hour journey hidden in the back of a truck.
According to multiple interviews conducted by the Associated Press, migrants expect to pay 3,000-4,000 US dollars for the next leg of the European trip: travelling by truck from Macedonia to Serbia, hiding in an Italy-bound freight container, or risking a flight to Europe with forged ID papers.
It is a journey that now feels like a world away for 33-year-old Pakistani migrant Kamran Misi, who slept rough in Thessaloniki for six months but was recently taken in by a church-run shelter.
His goal now is to have something resembling a normal life.
It is very painful for us and for the homeless people who stay on the street or in the park or anywhere, he said.

Modiano Market | Thessaloniki
Modiano Market is the largest covered food market in the centre of Thessaloniki and a historical monument. As it is soon to be closed for renovation, City of Errors Films captured the last moments of life of the building in its original form. Our gift to the city's historical archive and of course, its people.

#What to see in #Greece in 16 Days, #Thessaloniki DAY 2
Continuing our exploration of Thessaloniki's ancient Roman Agora, we stepped into the amphitheater; a trademark element of Greco-Roman ancient cities. Even though the amphitheater in itself is interesting and visually compelling, it is the ancient ruins of the chambers that somehow served it what usually itnerest me the most
#Grecia

Bicycle tour through Thessaloniki | Searching for Roman traces
Alaturka.Info™ -
Hello guys, today we are going to Thessaloniki again and this time we have taken our bicycles. So we are gonna do bicycle tour through the beautiful city of Thessaloniki. We will see if it works.
Here in Perea we are waiting for ferry again. It is busy a little because of the weekend I guess.
Thessaloniki, also known as Salonica, is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of Greek Macedonia.
She is a beautiful popular tourist destination in Greece.
For 2013, National Geographic Magazine included Thessaloniki in its top tourist destinations worldwide, while in 2014 Foreign Direct Investments magazine declared Thessaloniki as the best mid-sized European city of the future for human capital and lifestyle.
The city was founded around 315 BC by the King Cassander of Macedon, on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and 26 other local villages.
He named it after his wife Thessalonike, a half-sister of Alexander the Great and princess of Macedon as daughter of Philip II.
Lunch at Ladadika district
Ladadika district is a beautiful walkable area which is one of the favorite destinations for local, tourist visitors and Thessaloniki's students as well.
Thessaloniki is a lovely city set on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. The coastline offers magnificent view of the water and of the distant mountains.
And the breeze brings the smell of the sea which I remember from Izmir, my hometown.
“Umbrellas” in Thessaloniki - from a Greek sculptor lived 101 years.
The Umbrellas Sculpture stands on the waterfront of city and attracts many tourists.
The sculpture was set in 1997 when Thessaloniki was the cultural capital of Europe.

Greece in the summer is hot and dry. Under the intense sun falls climb to 40 degrees Celsius blue sky and brown ground is spread. Then loosen the proprietress is where I first found the hill toss Rica rain. It is the elevation of a low hill overlooking the city of Athens, but the snow was only a 277m. The hill top is always crowded with people and got to the dining hall with spectacular views. People stop by here on the first day or last day of the most travel. Because to organize a feel for the city at a glance.
