Death Row Art and Poetry at the Green Man Gallery, Buxton
An exhibition of artwork and poetry from Death Row, San Quentin Prison, California, was put on at the Green Man Gallery in Buxton, Derbyshire in September, 2018. The curators, Viv Doyle and Nicola White, both have penfriends in the prison. Their work, and that of their fellow inmates, was exhibited in this small market town in England, where it was much appreciated.

Buxton is a spa town in Derbyshire, England. It has the highest elevation – about 960 feet above sea level – of any market town in England. Close to the county boundary with Cheshire to the west and Staffordshire to the south, Buxton is described as the gateway to the Peak District National Park. A municipal borough until 1974, Buxton was then merged with other localities lying primarily to the north, including Glossop, to form the local government district and borough of High Peak within the county of Derbyshire. Economically, Buxton is within the sphere of influence of Greater Manchester.
Buxton is home to Poole's Cavern, an extensive limestone cavern open to the public, and St Ann's Well, fed by the geothermal spring bottled and sold internationally by Buxton Mineral Water Company. Also in the town is the Buxton Opera House, which hosts several music and theatre festivals each year. The Devonshire Campus of the University of Derby is housed in one of the town's historic buildings. Buxton is twinned with two towns: Oignies in France and Bad Nauheim in Germany.
Cultural events include the annual Buxton Festival, among other festivals and performances held in the Buxton Opera House, with shows running at other venues alongside this. Buxton Museum & Art Gallery offers year-round exhibitions. Buxton railway station is served by the former L&NWR and LMS line via Whaley Bridge. It has frequent trains to Stockport and the nearby city of Manchester. Buxton buses include services into the Peak District National Park. Other buses run to the nearby towns of Whaley Bridge, Chapel en le Frith, New Mills and Glossop, and the High Peak 'Transpeak' service offers an hourly link southwards to Taddington, Matlock, Derby and Nottingham and northwards to Stockport and Manchester. There is also a High Peak bus directly from Manchester Airport to Buxton.

Selfish Teenager - LivziEm original and live
Teenage Singer Songwriter LivziEm's first original song for guitar. Performed live at the Green Man Gallery in Buxton, England. With thanks to Michael Ross for the video and and to John Paul French who organised the event.
Background: Livzi had a fall out with her mum about (amongst other things) not working hard enough for her GCSE exams. She had other stuff going on too, as teenagers do and struggled to accept it, taking it quite hard. Her mum went out with her sister and Livzi got to work (not on the revision!) putting her emotions into words and looking up how to play guitar chords on youtube. She came up with the lyrics and music for Selfish Teenager and then called her mum and asked her to come home. She sat her mum and sister down and pulled out a guitar (previously unplayed) and sang this song to them just as it is here - it was something they will never forget.
The song charts her feelings from anger and denial, to acceptance that actually she may have been a little responisible for her situation too.
She later did very well in her exams (in case you were wondering). And mum wants to add that the constant rejection line was not about her!
Lyrics:
You can give me instructions
Tell me what to do,
Can't guarantee I'll be pleasing you,
Cos some things I just find hard to say.
Talking at me, 24/7
Trying to live with constant rejection
getting harder and harder each day.
When we talk there's only one thing you say...
That I'm just a selfish teenager
who's only heading the wrong way
and how I am , it's always self destructive
I've gotta learn to listen, I've gotta learn to listen someday
But you don't understand, no you don't understand
Cos that's not who I am
Or at least not who I planned to be
But if it's true, I'm sorry, I guess I just find it hard to se
Although Ive seen it in others, I never thought it could be,
Its just not me , I'd like to think it's not me
But now I'm afraid to see
The reflection in the water
Oh yes, I've thought about leaving, changing my life
Living each day one step at a time
But I know that's just a childish thing to believe
Oh I can't run from where I'm meant to be
oh but sometimes it's hard to see,
Cos I am a selfish teenager and sometimes I head the wrong way
and how I am, it can be self-destructive
I've gotta learn to listen, I've gotta learn to listen someday
But you don't understand...etc...
But since it's true, I'm sorry, I guess I'm just finding it hard to see,
Although I've seen it in others, I never thought it could be
It's just not me...I like to think it's not me
but now I'm ashamed to see, my reflection in the water.
And I know you planned my life for me,
Wanted a success story,
And now I've gone and thrown that in your face.
I hope you don't think that it's a waste,
I hope you don't think that it's a waste
Whoa I'm sorry now
It's now a complete mess,
It really is all just a mess
Ohhhh ........
It doesn't mean I love you any less.

Rain - An original song by LivziEm
Live performance of LivziEm's original song 'Rain'. Performed at the Green Man Gallery, Buxton, England. With thanks Michal Ross for the video and to John Paul French for promoting and organising the event.
Lyrics (below) and Music - Copyright LivziEm 2013
Wind me up and put me on your top,
Stare at me and watch my hands drop,
Hear me going tick, tock, tick, tock.
Well I wish some things they all would stay the same,
Same job, same place, same name,
But I realise life it isn't just a game,
And I let these crazy things they overtake.
It's like rain rain go away,
Come again another day,
Through my clothes and soak me to the bone.
Like a fairytale,
Always spinning in a whirl,
Happily ever after in the end.
It was another quiet time,
Shortly after midnight,
Yet your thoughts were still playing on my mind,
They refuse to go to rest anytime.
Take me to another place, take me faraway,
The silence is deafening,
Deafening my brain,
Like someone's out to get me,
And it always ends the same,
My words are out to kill me and I know I'm gonna say,
Ohh..
It's like rain rain go away,
Come again another day,
Through my clothes and soak me to the bone.
Like a fairytale,
Always spinning in a whirl,
Happily ever after in the end.
Don't go counting rainbows don't go chasing pots of gold,
Don't depend on just your future cause you don't know what it holds,
Don't go spending all your money cause you think you're turning old,
Take a note of what's around you, and remember what you're told-
If you're in a place that's lonely,
If you're in a place that's cold,
Don't think the world is ending, that's how this song took note.... Oh..
It's like rain rain go away,
Come again another day,
Through my clothes and soak me to the bone.
Like a fairytale,
Always spinning in a whirl,
Happily ever after in the end.
Rain rain go away,
Come again another day,
Through my clothes and soak me to the bone.
Like a fairytale,
Always spinning in a whirl,
Happily ever after in the end.
Wind me up and put me on your top,
Stare at me and watch my hands drop.
Hear me going tick, tock, tick tock.

Killer Harry Street dies in suspected heart attack
A man who killed five people in a shooting spree in West Bromwich has died at a high-security psychiatric hospital, the BBC understands.
Harry Street was detained indefinitely in October after guns and explosives were found at his Birmingham home.
In 1978, then known as Barry Williams, he killed three people on the Bustleholm estate and the owners of a petrol station.
The 70-year-old died after a suspected heart attack at Ashworth Hospital.
A spokesperson for Mersey Care NHS Trust said a patient was admitted to the general hospital after becoming unwell but died at 09:49 GMT on Christmas Eve.
Two months ago Street admitted making an improvised explosive device as well as 50 homemade bullets.
'Obsessed with neighbours'
Three handguns were also found at his home in the Hall Green area.
A serious case review is ongoing after police said they were initially unaware of Street's previous name or past convictions.
Sentencing Street, the judge at Birmingham Crown Court said he had become obsessed with his neighbours and harboured delusions they were harassing him.
Mr Justice Blair also drew comparisons with the 70-year-old's past, that saw him kill three neighbours in West Bromwich 36 years earlier.
He said Street had shown similar behaviour to that which had preceded the terrible events of 26 October 1978.
Among other charges, Street also admitted one count of putting a neighbour in fear of violence between 2009 and 2013.
Street had been released in 1994 after serving 15 years at Broadmoor hospital for the 1978 shootings.
The spree started with him killing his neighbour George Burkitt and Mr Burkitt's son, Phillip, who were fixing a car on their driveway in Andrew Road.
Iris Burkitt became his next victim, before Street shot her daughter Gillian, who survived.
Neighbours Judith and Joe Chambers also survived, despite being shot multiple times.
Street then fled the scene in his Ford Capri, indiscriminately shooting as he left the estate.
Heading towards the East Midlands, he stopped at a petrol station in Nuneaton, where he shot dead the owners Lisa Di Maria and her husband Michel.
He was eventually cornered in Buxton, where police rammed his car before arresting him.
Almost 40 years on, Gillian Burkitt, now Gillian Dudley, was in the public gallery to hear sentence passed.
She celebrated with other victims as Street was told he may never be released.
