Grand Marriage Proposal at Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor
Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor holds a special place in the Glasgow West End community. As a celebration destination for 80 years, there have been many weddings and proposals held at the hotel. After hearing so many stories from guests who feel that their cherished moments are a part of the hotel’s history, Nitin Ramtri, general manager, Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor, was eager to create a lasting memory of his own before transferring to a new role at London Hilton on Park Lane.
Ramtri chose to host his marriage proposal over the Christmas season in The Terrace, the newly refurbished lounge overlooking the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. This romantic setting was an easy choice, not only is it a sophisticated, beautifully decorated venue, choosing The Terrace allowed Ramtri to share this moment with his hotel team.
“I met my fiancé, Caroline Shaw, over 4 years ago in Aberdeen, where we both worked for Hilton hotels. Working for Hilton feels like working with family and it was important for me to share this moment with the Hilton team that we both cherish,” said Ramtri. “Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor holds such a special place in my heart and now we’ll always have a reason to come back and visit.”
The proposal event was crafted by the hotel team, who even arranged for a videographer to capture the moment. Having invited his fiancé and her closest family and friends to a special festive dinner, Ramtri excused himself from the table. Moments later, a hotel trolley carrying a very large gift, was wheeled through The Terrace following a young singer performing Over the Rainbow, Shaw’s favourite song. After being invited to open her early Christmas present, Shaw was overwhelmingly surprised to find Ramtri inside, ready to request her hand in marriage, to which she gladly said, “Yes!”
2018 marks the 80th year that memorable hospitality has been delivered at this historic listed building in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. Hilton Glasgow Grosvenor is seeking stories and photos from guests who have created their own special moments at the hotel as they work on creating a new display to showcase the hotel’s history. Guests are invited to email glasgowgros_events@hilton.com for more information or to share their photos and stories.

70 AMAZING AND RARE HISTORICAL PHOTOS OF SCOTLAND
Photos from vintag.es Photos from vintag.es The Edwardian era was a time of unprecedented social and political revolution in Britain. By the start of the new century, the country had reached a level of such general prosperity that, for the first time, working men and women were in a position to both argue and agitate for a share of the wealth. In Scotland, at the centre of the incredible manufacturing clamour of industrial Glasgow, a worker army was banding together as a political movement demanding votes for all men. Trade unionists and women campaigned for what they regarded as their natural rights. All demanded a radical change to society. The establishment listened, and came to accept that the future success of the nation would depend on a better educated and emancipated working class.
The period teemed with innovation, from the cinema, wireless radio and mass use of the telephone, to the invention of the turbine engine, advances in physics and the achievement of powered flight. With a new age came the freedom to explore new ideas – the genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh emerged from the Arts and Crafts movement, revolutionising design and pioneering the beginnings of modernism.
The old order was slipping away. For the wealthy, the Edwardian era was characterised by the 'Golden Age' of the country house – the long weekends of parties and field sports. Rather than the preserve of the aristocracy, these trappings of privilege were enjoyed increasingly by a class of aspirational and newly affluent merchants and industrialists. Yet in a few short years, these halcyon days would give way to the sale, dispersal and destruction of many Scottish estates.
This unique and largely unseen selection of period photography, taken from the RCAHMS archives, reveals an intimate portrait of an age. From the work of famous photographers like Bedford Lemere & Co and Thomas Annan, to snapshots from private family albums, these images provide a fascinating glimpse into a remarkable period in our history.

• 26 April 2013
The ABCs of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived with productions spanning fifteen countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world's leading talents in contemporary genre film, including the directors of House of the Devil, Hobo with a Shotgun, A Serbian Film, Tokyo Gore Police, You're Next & four British Directors - Ben Wheatley (Sightseers), Simon Rumley (Red, White & Blue), Jake West (Doghouse) & Leeds based Lee Hardcastle, who with his claymation short, won a competition to be the final Director. Inspired by children's educational books, the motion picture is comprised of twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death.
This alphabetical arsenal of destruction orchestrated by what has been described as a stunning roll call of some of the most exciting names in horror across the world. is one of the most hotly anticipated releases for 2013. When the trailer received its first UK airing, last year, it was screened to a packed audience at the 13th Frightfest, Empire Cinema, Leicester Square, the 2 minute clip received rapturous applause from the attending audience. The film will receive its UK premiere at the this year's Glasgow Film Festival as part of Film4Frightfest (Tickets for this event are now sold out) and its Irish premiere at the inaugural Twisted Celluloid Film Festival at the Triskel Arts Centre.
