Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) | India’s First and Only Heritage Centre & Aerospace Museum
In this video you can understand how to reach and explore HAL of Bangalore on YouTube.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bangalore, India. It is governed under the management of the Indian Ministry of Defence. The government-owned corporation is primarily involved in the operations of the aerospace and is currently involved in the design, fabrication and assemble of aircraft, jet engines, helicopters and their spare parts. HAL HF-24 Marut fighter-bomber was the first fighter aircraft made in India.
It was established as Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore on the 23 December 1940 by Seth Walchand Hirachand who became Chairman of the company. In 1943 the Bangalore factory was handed over to the United States Army Air Forces. After India gained independence in 1947, the management of the company was passed over to the Government of India. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited was formed on 1 October 1964. In 1957 company started manufacturing Bristol Siddeley Orpheus jet engines under licence at new factory located in Bangalore.
During the 1980s, HAL's operations saw a rapid increase which resulted in the development of new indigenous aircraft such as the HAL Tejas and HAL Dhruv. HAL also developed an advanced version of the MiG-21, known as MiG-21 Bison, which increased its life-span by more than 20 years. By 2012, HAL was reportedly bogged down in the details of production and has been slipping on its schedules.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL is India’s first and only aviation museum which was established in 2001. It has a large collection of aircraft models, photographs, fighter planes, and helicopters. There are also aircraft simulators, a mock air traffic control tower.
It is situated at the intersection of HAL Old Airport Road & Basavanagar Road. It is about 17 Kms from the Bengaluru City Railway Station. The Heritage Centre & Aerospace Museum is sprawled over 4 acres of lush green land.
There are two major halls, one displaying the photographs that chart the growth of aviation in each decade from 1940 till date and a Hall of Fame that takes the visitors on an exciting journey through the Heritage of Aerospace & Aviation Industry in India.
The second Hall highlights the various functions of an Aero Engine by displaying motorized cross sections of various models of Aero Engines. Real Engines such as Garret (for Dornier Aircraft), Adour (for Jaguar Aircraft) and Orpheus (for Kiran Aircraft) can be seen here along with Ejection Seat with Parachute; and Pushpak & Basant Aircraft.
Outdoor display of Aircraft such as MARUT, MIG-21, HT-2, KIRAN, CANBERRA, AJEET, LAKSHYA (Pilotless Target Aircraft) & many more, will excite aerospace lovers of all ages - kids, students and adults.

1. The Gallery of the museum

It is spread over an area of 4 acres and is India's first such establishment devoted entirely towards the aeronautical history and science of the country. This one of a kind museum divides its public display into two halls.
The first hall has the entire process of development and evolution of aeronautics, aviation and aerospace engineering and everything related to it in detailed charts starting from the 1940s. It includes the museum's Wall of Fame where the significant milestones of HAL in the six decades and the people involved are mentioned.
The second hall displays the real, life-size models of old and new aircrafts, aero engines and other parts and their inner workings, some of which are very famous ones like Garret, Adour and Orpheus. The aircrafts models include fighter planes, jets, MIGs, helicopters and so on that have been till date used by the Indian defense. Some of the mentionable displays are the models of the Kiran and the Marut, an antique Canberra bomber and the ill-famous MIG-21.
2. Simulators
Other than this, there is basic simulator game to give the visitors a virtual experience in flying and a real motion simulator, which give you the very authentic feeling of flying a jet or a plane. It would be a shame to miss this chance of the first-hand experience of being a pilot.
3. Air Traffic Control Tower
Apart from witnessing numerous helicopters and aircraft, you can even feel the working of aviation Industry. This place houses a mock Air Traffic Control Tower, which provides the visitors with an incomparable experience of viewing the landing and take-off of plane insight and thus is an amazing experience for everyone visiting the place.

This patch of yet another scientific facts and models educates the public about the various ways we can practice sustainability to save us, nature and the earth. It includes explained mechanisms of how solar energy works, how power is generated from turbines and windmills, why is biogas important and so on.
There is also a library stacked with volumes of material related to aero science and history, a souvenir shop, an aeromodelling club, an orchidarium, a herbal garden and a children's play area to keep the tiny tots busy.
