The Hermitage Cat Island Bahamas
It's one of the most enchanting, mysterious places in the Caribbean: the Hermitage monastery on Cat Island in the Bahamas.
The Hermitage, Cat Island Bahamas
We finally made it to The Hermitage on Cat Island in the Bahamas. At 206 feet above sea level, it’s the highest point in the Bahamas.
I had a crazy idea to propose to Castaway Crystal here a few years ago, but bad weather and my own bad planning didn’t let that happen, probably for the best! So when we finally made it to Cat Island, The Hermitage was the first thing on our list to see. Enjoy the video and let us know if you’ve been and what you thought. Cheers!

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Cat Island is in the central Bahamas, and one of its districts, and has the nation's highest point. Its Mount Alvernia rises to 206 ft (63 m) and is topped by a monastery called The Hermitage. This assembly of buildings was erected by the Franciscan Brother Jerome alias John Cyril Hawes.
The first European settlers were Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, who arrived in 1783. The island may have been named after Arthur Catt, a pirate, or the name may refer to its one-time large population of feral cats.

Ep. 68: The Hermitage at Cat Island
Family Sailing Vlog - Episode 68: The Hermitage at Cat Island
Our adventures continue in the Far Bahamas as we visit the Hermitage at Cat Island. In the town of New Bight, there is the highest hill in the Bahamas where an amazing stone structure sits. Mike quietly explores this space and is amazed by the deceptively humble building, despite the approach that seemed like a path to a castle. This is one of the most amazing places we visited. Enjoy this beautiful Bahamas day!

TRAVEL VLOG II Cat Island, Bahamas
Come to Cat Island and visit Mount Alvernia which is the most visited historical landmark in the Bahamas. Also called Como Hill and The Hermitage, it is the highest peak arising some 206 feet above sea level. Thousands of people, Including me, make the trek every year to visit this medieval style monastery. It was built in 1939 by Father Jermone. a Catholic priest who lived on the island. Father Jerome also built the St. Peter and Paul's church in Clarence Town Long Island.

The Hermitage
Monsignor John C. Hawes, also known as Father Jerome, went to Cat island in 1939. Known as a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, he was best-known as an architect and a priest. When he arrived on Cat Island, he purchased the highest hilltop there - Mt. Alvernia, also known as Como Hill in New Bight, Cat Island. As the highest point in The Bahamas, Mt. Alvernia rises to 206 ft (63 m).
Upon Mt. Alvernia, Father Jerome built a church, which is still known to this day as The Hermitage. There is a small area for parking at the base of Mt. Alvernia, and from there you are invited to hike to the top of the hill to get to the Hermitage. Though the Hermitage is miniature in size, standing in it allows you to see the the amazing view of the entire island.

Sailing JAEKA, week 15: Cat Island and the Highest Point in the Bahamas
We have been sailing a lot during this week. First we got back to George Town waiting for our relay. Yes, we have been there before and this time we anchored next to the Stocking island. After that we have been sailing for an entire day to reach Cat island, a place where the highest point in the Bahamas is. It was thrilling to see the pure nature around and the highest point itself (Hermitage). Plus we were the only boat in a harbor :-)

Cat Island Bahamas
It’s the great Caribbean beach destination you didn’t even know existed, filled with impossibly long stretches of white (and pink) sand: Cat Island, Bahamas.
Pigeon Cay Beach Club, Cat Island, Bahamas
This is Pigeon Cay Beach Resort on Cat Island in the Bahamas... Nice place... I was there working on a top secret video that will be released soon but loved visiting this place so much, I couldn't help getting the drone up for a few shots. You can book yourself a room there by visiting their website
The place is a little tricky to get to. But if you don't like the big Atlantis resort kind of vacation; if you want undeveloped white sand beaches with very few people around you, then the extra effort is worth it. This is a real discovery not yet ruined by top ten lists in travel mags.
This place is so low key, you can take a 3 mile walk on the beach and not see another person. Water clarity and temp is perfect and the best quality you will see anywhere on the planet. I've been to the Maldives and the Seychelles which are good, but not any better than this.
Rooms are more like penthouse suites with a living room and full kitchen and all are only steps from the sand with excellent views. They are very clean and comfortable.
This is not a place for well healed people who like to wear high heals to dinner. It's a place for people who don't expect 24/7 service and find pleasure in waking up the hotel owner to cook you breakfast. Drinks are always available at the bar but it's self serve and you write up your own ticket on an honor system.
Hotel owners Leslie and Ned have been holding the fort here for over 20 years. Some people complain about Ned being a little prickly but he's actually got a heart of gold. His crusty nature is also his charm. He's a real guy's guy and cooks like a professional chef. You will love his cooking once you learn to just find him and say I'm hungry, can you cook up something? He never refuses.
The only time Ned got a little antsy with me was when I started buzzing his dogs with my drone. I think that is enough of that, don't you? he said. I agreed and brought it down for good.
Unfortunately Leslie was not there during our stay, but from the family pictures you can view in the office/gift shop she looks like a really warm and pleasant person.
It's a unique experience that will change the way you look at vacation travel. Let me know if your experience is as good as mine was.
Secret Little Beach, Cat Island Bahamas
As promised, here is the rest of the footage using the drone at Little Beach on Cat Island, Bahamas. I’m not sure if that’s the real name of it but it works! Enjoy the views! #justgo
