Walks in Derbyshire: Exploring The Hermitage, Dale Abbey
Today I am up in Derbyshire in search of a hermit. Philip Naylor has agreed to show me the old hermitage in Dale Abbey, cut into the stand stone and tell me a little of the legend.
Dale Abbey is a village and civil parish in the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England, 6 miles north east of Derby. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 1,351. Formerly known as Depedale or Deepdale, the village contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century.

The Hermits Cave in Dale Abbey.
This is our final video in Dale Abbey and we find the Hermits Cave.
It said they do not know who the Hermit was but I am sure I have seen reference that it might have been a local from the village.
Dale Abbey Ruins at summer solstice 2018
With the influx of fabulous weather this month, it's time for more adventures to historical sites.
Dale Abbey dates back to the 12th century & the ruins somehow are still standing silently in the middle of a field. I was determined to find the surrounding sights, even if it means almost losing my shoes.

Walks in Nottinghamshire: Exploring Wollaton Hall
Philip Naylor and I are off to explore Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire.
Wollaton Hall is an Elizabethan country house of the 1580s standing on a small but prominent hill in Wollaton Park, Nottingham, England. The house is now Nottingham Natural History Museum, with Nottingham Industrial Museum in the out-buildings. The surrounding parkland has a herd of deer, and is regularly used for large-scale outdoor events such as rock concerts, sporting events and festivals.
Wollaton is a classic prodigy house, the architectural sensation of its age, though its builder was not a leading courtier and its construction stretched the resources he mainly obtained from coalmining; the original family home was at the bottom of the hill. Though much re-modelled inside, the startlingly bold exterior remains largely intact.

Walking - The Nine Ladies Derbyshire
High up on Stanton Moor near Rowsley in Derbyshire is the Nine Ladies stone circle.
This is the second time doing this walk, the week previous I had issues with the video and footage I shot was useless, so a week later and I am back to repeat the route.
After parking at the Rowsley Shopping Village the walk begins and remains for the most part an uphill stroll, taking a route through some old stone quarry sites long since disused, and with ruined stone buildings an discarded and unfinished millstones giving a glimpse of an industrial past, all leading eventually to Stanton Moor and our objective the Nine Ladies stone circle. Folk lore says the ladies were turned to stone after being caught dancing on the sabbath, shameful indeed!
The walk off the moor leads through woodland and open fields, offering some stunning panoramic views of the White Peak. Make sure you stop and take time to drink in the view.

Jedburgh Castle Jail and exhibition
Jedburgh Castle was fought over during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and was demolished by the Scots commanded by Sir James Douglas of Balvenie in 1409.
In 1823 a jail was built on the site to designs by Archibald Elliot. It was modified in 1847 by Thomas Brown. This closed in 1868. The building was restored to an 1820s appearance in 1968 by Aitken and Turnbull. It opened to the public as Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum. The museum features local history displays.
