A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
The Hermitage
A trip to the Hermitage is a must! Set atop the highest point in the Bahamas on Mt. Alvernia, is a tiny monastery and chapel built by architect/priest Father Jerome in the late 1940's. This short but steep climb rewards you with a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and turquoise waters of Exuma sound on the other. Beach cruiser bicycles are available for rent from FBV. Maps and informative books for touring are available at the front desk.
Cat Island Bahamas: Old Bight Beach
It’s called Old Bight Beach, and it’s the signature strand on beautiful Cat Island in the Bahamas, a 150-square-mile island with less than 1,500 people, a place where every beach is your own private stretch of sand.

Fountain Bay Resort, Cat Island Bahamas
Fountain Bay Resort is located on Cat Island in the Bahamas. This rustic Bahamian island offers up stunning beaches, great local food and friendly people. Fountain Bay Resort is in New Bight settlement, about right in the middle of the island on the lee side. The resort features 5 upscale cottages, a clubhouse restaurant and bar, water sports and some stunning crystal clear water. We enjoyed our stay and hope you will to!
Definitely grab a kayak or paddle board and explore the two tidal lagoons on either side of the bay. You could see stingrays, sea turtles, and small sharks. They also have a pig beach! Just ask and they will take you out there.
More cottages are coming and they are currently building a marina for you boaters. Cheers!

Pigeon Cay Beach Club, Cat Island, Bahamas
This is Pigeon Cay Beach Resort on Cat Island in the Bahamas... Nice place... I was there working on a top secret video that will be released soon but loved visiting this place so much, I couldn't help getting the drone up for a few shots. You can book yourself a room there by visiting their website
The place is a little tricky to get to. But if you don't like the big Atlantis resort kind of vacation; if you want undeveloped white sand beaches with very few people around you, then the extra effort is worth it. This is a real discovery not yet ruined by top ten lists in travel mags.
This place is so low key, you can take a 3 mile walk on the beach and not see another person. Water clarity and temp is perfect and the best quality you will see anywhere on the planet. I've been to the Maldives and the Seychelles which are good, but not any better than this.
Rooms are more like penthouse suites with a living room and full kitchen and all are only steps from the sand with excellent views. They are very clean and comfortable.
This is not a place for well healed people who like to wear high heals to dinner. It's a place for people who don't expect 24/7 service and find pleasure in waking up the hotel owner to cook you breakfast. Drinks are always available at the bar but it's self serve and you write up your own ticket on an honor system.
Hotel owners Leslie and Ned have been holding the fort here for over 20 years. Some people complain about Ned being a little prickly but he's actually got a heart of gold. His crusty nature is also his charm. He's a real guy's guy and cooks like a professional chef. You will love his cooking once you learn to just find him and say I'm hungry, can you cook up something? He never refuses.
The only time Ned got a little antsy with me was when I started buzzing his dogs with my drone. I think that is enough of that, don't you? he said. I agreed and brought it down for good.
Unfortunately Leslie was not there during our stay, but from the family pictures you can view in the office/gift shop she looks like a really warm and pleasant person.
It's a unique experience that will change the way you look at vacation travel. Let me know if your experience is as good as mine was.
TOH NEVIS SUNSHINES

Information on Schools and Activities for Kids on Elbow Cay
HGCTV's Bahamas Real Estate production team and Ask Your Agent host Sandra Kemp visit various locations in the charming and idyllic Abaco Cays.
In this segment HG Christie Hope Town agent Frank Knowles speaks with HGCTV Host Sandra Kemp about schools and kids activities on Elbow Cay.
Boredom and idle time is not option on this community minded island. Frank shares insights into all of the fun and educational activities available for families, as well as school in Hope Town and the various modes of transportation for the school age population of this charming seaside settlement, which truly supports the adage of 'It's Takes a Village to Raise a Child'. Frank provides information about kids using a boat pool instead of a car to get t school - how cool is that! We also get a little bit of a history lesson about the school system.
If you are seeking a family oriented, and quaint environment then Hope Town is an ideal option. Transitioning to Hope Town as a primary resident is made easy with all amenities in place and a plethora of wholesome opportunities and activities for kids. As a second home owner, there are few locations that can offer such an inclusive solution the way Hope Town does.
If you have kids that love the outdoors sailing, soccer, swimming and more are available to them. There is also ballet classes, art classes, music classes and more.
