Manitowoc and Two Rivers – From Ship to Shore
In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, Mariah and Eric explore the wonders of Manitowoc and Two Rivers from sunken ship to stunning shore. Eric begins by learning about the history and industry of the rivers that flow through Manitowoc and Two Rivers. After exploring the Rogers Street Fishing Village in Two Rivers, he heads to Burger Boat Company to see what the historic company is up to today. He also meets up with some kayakers to do some paddling on the Manitowoc River.
Both the Manitowoc River and the East and West Twin Rivers eventually flow into Lake Michigan, which offers beauty and exploration above and below the surface. At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Mariah talks with a marine archaeologist about the shipwrecks in the area, and the different ways visitors can learn about, and access the wrecks. She also joins a group of standup paddle boarders at the Manitowoc Marina and takes in an amazing view of the city from the water.
Back on land, Eric explores the Historic Washington House in Two Rivers, and learns how to make the perfect ice cream sundae in the city where it was invented. We also get to know local producers at Pine River Dairy, who have been manufacturing butter in the area for more than 75 years. Eric then heads to Manitowoc’s Pinecrest Historical Village for their annual Pinecrest Plates event, which brings in local farmers and fantastic food for people to enjoy.
And you can’t visit Manitowoc and Two Rivers without spending time on the coast. Mariah flies a kite on the pristine Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers, wanders the beautiful grounds of West of the Lake Gardens, and goes bird watching at Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve. There is so much beauty to be experienced in Manitowoc and Two Rivers and countless ways to do it – from ship to shore!

Dedicated To The Farmers Of Wisconsin
This video is dedicated the Farmers of Wisconsin and all around the world. Farmers are environmental stewards, who are protecting the environment and growing our healthy food.
Its a thankless job by the general public so next time you see any type of farmer make sure to show your appreciation. Without them you would not have any food on your table.

History Day Documentary Wisconsin Milk Strikes of 1933
North of 8 Announcement: September 14, 2016
The Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie railroad (now the Gandy Dancer Trail) came through Polk County at the turn of the century, reaching Frederic by 1901. The coming of the railroad created some towns (Centuria, Lewis, Milltown) caused others to shift in location (Luck and Siren) and was the death knell for many others (Clam Falls, Cushing, West Sweden, Lamar..). Mr. Russ Hanson will present a slide show on the coming of the railroad with some of the changes that it made to Polk and Burnett Counties with a brief history of each village along the track.
Hanson has studied the ebb and flow of rural centers in Polk County from founding in the earliest days (1840s) to modern times. The coming of railroad heralded the start of tourism, the consolidation of small towns, and the broadening of local folks horizons as large cities were just a ticket away from the farm. Local businesses prospered as Luck Butter could be shipped to New York, lumber from the mills at Frederic sent across the USA, local stores could be supplied rapidly with the latest goods; the mails and newspapers came daily; and culture came to the country one could leave for a visit to the MN state fair or a matinee performance in the Twin Cities, taking the morning train in and returning in the evening.
Russell B Hanson grew up on a dairy farm a few miles NW of Cushing Wisconsin. Realizing that farming was way too hard of a living, he chose overeducation, graduating from St Croix Falls High School, UW-River Falls (Math, Physics majors and Chemistry minor), continued at UW-Madison where he added a license to teach and later a computer science degree through the U of MN system.
Having taught at Washington Island, WI, Goodman, WI, and Amery for a total of 6 years, he switched into working with computers, as he found them more responsive to his teaching methods, He spent the next 25 years at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN. helping bring dependence on computers to each and every person who worked there. Included was a dozen years in digestive disease research, six years in cardiovascular research, and, having declined noticeably in mental acuity, spent his last half-decade in research administration where this was not noticed.
He retired at age 58, and since has pursued an interest in local history publishing 20+ books, booklets and as well as many online essays on collected stories from local folks and places of interest. He has various volunteer positions including president, secretary, treasurer, web page support, computer support, and volunteer, in 5 local history societies, writing and genealogy groups. Each Monday afternoon he volunteer for drop-in genealogy help at the Luck library for 5 years running for the Polk County Genealogical Society.
Russ, with his wife Margo, lives on the old family farm where he plays the role of gentleman farmer, able to talk price of corn and beans in his seed corn cap. A circular life, growing up a backwoods farm kid, venturing into the world, making a small splash and declining into obscurity in the abundant weeds in the barnyard.
His Facebook page, where he gives a daily update on the farm is at his sporadic essays reminiscing about the old days are posted at His research days at Mayo can be reviewed at

The 50 States Portrayed by Random Shit
CLICK SHOW MORE FOR EXPLANATIONS FOR EACH STATE
Alabama: One of the first states you'd think of when you think of this type of bucolic setting.
Alaska: This video was actually shot in Russia, but since we're talking about the United States here, this would be a very Alaskan problem.
Arizona: So hot you could cook an egg on a pavement.
Arkansas: This is an extremely redneck video, and Arkansas is an extremely redneck state. Also, there's a dog in the video. Arkansas has the highest proportion of dog owners out of all the states.
California: Has officially recognized a third gender, becoming the first state to do so.
Colorado: Not only is weed legal, but there's also a good chunk of the Rocky Mountains, so high elevation as well. High in more than one way!
Connecticut: ...It exists.
Delaware: Became a state before any other state.
Florida: A bunch of crazy shit happens there.
Georgia: Birthplace of Waffle House. Also, lots of black people there.
Hawaii: No further explanation needed.
Idaho: See Hawaii.
Illinois: The joke here contains some weird black people-crime hybrid punchline. Probably some racism in Illinois too.
Indiana: Yes, this is an Indy 500 race.
Iowa: Has sort of an identity crisis. Most likely from a lack of identity itself.
Kansas: Flat landscape.
Kentucky: Its famous derby, raced with horses.
Louisiana: Not only is it prone to water-related natural disasters which is why it was the state most affected by Hurricane Katrina, but Louisiana also has the highest murder rate of any state. If there was any state that deserved the nickname the Death State it would be Louisiana.
Maine and Maryland: Lobster and crab.
Massachusetts: One of the most liberal states, known for its colleges, and both college campuses and liberalism are notorious for political correctness.
Michigan: You like lakes? Michigan has great ones!
Minnesota: Might as well be part of Canada. They'd fit right in.
Mississippi: Infamous for ranking worst in various categories according to surveys and studies.
Missouri: We all know its name sounds eerily similar to the word 'misery.' And given the state's reputation, many people from Missouri would think it's fitting.
Montana: Obviously, they keep bears as pets over there.
Nebraska: Birthplace of Cabela's. This video was filmed in the exact town it's headquartered in, too. A town I actually live quite close to.
Nevada: Area 51.
New Hampshire: The first potato ever planted in North America was in New Hampshire.
New Jersey and New York: Bunch of Italians in those states.
New Mexico: Not called New Mexico for nothing.
The Carolinas: Are like twin siblings.
North Dakota: The Dakota Access Pipeline.
Ohio: Requires no further explanation.
Oklahoma: Isn't there a stereotype that Oklahomans are a bunch of storm chasers because of Oklahoma's shitload of tornadoes?
Oregon: Peaceful, backwater, and foresty.
Pennsylvania: Lots of history.
Rhode Island: Home to the fictional town where Family Guy takes place, Quahog.
South Dakota: Faces on mountains. Not only is there Mt. Rushmore, but there is also the Crazy Horse monument, which I know is supposed to be a full-body sculpture, but as of now it looks like another face on a mountain.
Tennessee: Country music.
Texas: I don't really think I need to explain any further on this one.
Utah: Most religious state outside of the Bible Belt.
Vermont: Least religious state in the country.
Virginia: Where hicks (Crayn) and... non-hicks (Crayon) collide.
Washington: Birthplace of Microsoft, who created Windows.
West Virginia: I don't think I need to explain any further.
Wisconsin: Known for both dairy and burgers, both of which come from cows.
Wyoming: The Yellowstone volcano. I know I used Tsar Bomba for this instead of a volcanic eruption, but nonetheless they're both still explosions.
DC Bonus: Legal stalkers such as the NSA and FBI. I think our Fed. Gov't itself is also being too nosy.
