The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra (September, 2010).
The Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra is the most important Russian monastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The monastery was founded in 1345 by one of the most venerated Russian saints, Sergius of Radonezh, who built a wooden church in honour of the Holy Trinity on Makovets Hill. Early development of the monastic community is well documented in contemporary lives of Sergius and his disciples.
The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks.
My wife Galina and I have visited Lavra on the 10th of September, 2010, when we had our vacation. It was a great sunny day and it was a good trip. We were very happy that we have visited this place, after all, because we live not so far from Sergiev Posad and we just had no time to do it.
This is short video about our trip. Enjoy. ;)

Architectural Ensemble of the Trinity Sergius Lavra in ... (UNESCO/NHK)
This is a fine example of a working Orthodox monastery, with military features that are typical of the 15th to the 18th century, the period during which it developed. The main church of the Lavra, the Cathedral of the Assumption (echoing the Kremlin Cathedral of the same name), contains the tomb of Boris Godunov. Among the treasures of the Lavra is the famous icon, The Trinity , by Andrei Rublev.

The Golden Ring of Russia - Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius in Sergiyev Posad
This video is a compilation of clips from a day trip we took to Sergiyev Posad, the closest town to Moscow of the Golden Ring in Russia - this monastery is about a 1 hour train ride from Moscow Yaroslavskiy station, about 75km (45 miles) to the northeast.
Russia's Golden Ring is a ring of towns/cities outside of Moscow which all played a very important role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church - all of these towns have great monasteries, cathedrals and other historical sites dating from as far back as the 12th century!
Sergiyev Posad, known as Zagorsk in the Soviet period, is nowadays an industrial town of around 100,000 inhabitants - tourists flock here, however, for the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, a monastery complex which was started in 1337 by Sergius of Radonezh.
Major sites at the monastery include the Cathedral of the Assumption, which was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 1559, with a major burial site right outside of the cathedral housing the tombs of the Godunov family, including Boris who was the leader of Russia at the end of the 16th century. His reign saw Russia descend into the Time of Troubles, the precursor to the 300 year Romanov dynasty and perhaps the single biggest reason for it occurring.
The monastery is small but a nice half-day trip from Moscow - check it out if you can. Hope you enjoy the video!
TRINITY LAVRA ST SERGIUS. SERGIEV POSAD.
The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius (Russian: Тро́ице-Се́ргиева Ла́вра) is the most important Russianmonastery and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 70 km to the north-east from Moscow by the road leading to Yaroslavl, and currently is home to over 300 monks.
Considered to be the most important monastery in Russia and the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, the St. Sergius Lavra is often nicknamed the ‘Russian Vatican’. Busloads of Russian pilgrims arrive here every day to visit the relics of its founder the revered 14th Century Saint Sergius of Radonezh, to drink water from the holy spring and to admire the medieval icons and exquisite beauty of the monastery’s many colourful churches and ecclesiastic buildings.

A glimpse at Sergiyev Posad, the heart of Russian Orthodoxy
Sergiyev Posad is a unique Russian city with a long history that dates back to the 14th century. The Trinity Lavra (monastery), established in the 1340s, makes the city special. Christians have been coming here for centuries to admire its beauty.
The most significant iconostasis of the Lavra was created by the famous Russian icon painters Andrey Rublev and Daniil Cherniy. Especially for this iconostasis Rublev painted a famous icon The Holy Trinity. Totally, the monastery's ensemble includes more than 50 buildings of different missions, which were designed and decorated by the best masters of XV-XIX centuries. Since 1993 the architecture of the Trinity - St. Sergius Lavra has been an object of UNESCO World Heritage.
Today the monastery is a country residence of Patriarch Kirill I of Moscow.

So I know this isn't about kino. I've recently come to Moscow, where I will be for the next couple months. I've just gotten over the jetlag, but while I was still jetlagged, I was able to grab some footage of places I visited. I didn't know how big the Orthodox Church was in Russia until I came here. I had seen Andrei Rublev (which I want to do a video on soon) but my knowledge of Russian Orthodoxy was limited to just that singular Tarkovsky film. I didn't understand the fascination with icons or the golden cathedrals, but being inside the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, it all clicked. The combined effect of the gold, icons, paintings, candles, and vast spaces overwhelms anyone who enters. I urge anyone who visits Russia to come here.
The Dekalog 9 video is done and I'll release it this week. I've got a review of Stranger Things coming out soon, as well as a video about cowboys and samurais. Now that I'm in a quieter environment, I'm hoping to devote more time to Youtube and upload regularly.

The Holy Trinity Lavra or Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra (Trinity-Sergius Monastery) is the most important monastery in Russia and the spiritual center of Russian Orthodox Christianity. Founded in 1345 by St. Sergius of Radonezh and containing his relics, Holy Trinity is located in the city of Sergiyev Posad (formerly known by the Soviet name Zagorsk) about 45 miles northeast of Moscow.
According to Lonely Planet Russia & Belarus, If you have time for just one day trip out of Moscow, this is the obvious choice. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1993, calling it a fine example of a working Orthodox monastery, with military features that are typical of the 15th to the 18th century.
