My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
Capernaum, the Ministry Base of Jesus, Magdala, Chorazin, Bethsaida, Tabgha, Sea of Galilee, Israel
Capernaum was the ministry base of Jesus during His ministry time on earth. Learn about the amazing things that happened there and in the surrounding area.
Location
1. The Sea of Galilee is located in the northern part of Israel known as the Galilee region. Therefore, it’s called the Sea of Galilee.
2. It is also referred to in Scripture by other names like Ginnosar, Lake of Gennesar, Gennesaret, Sea of Chinneroth, Kinneret, and Sea of Tiberias.
3. It’s about 70 miles (115 Km.) north of Jerusalem and about 27 miles (45 Km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
4. It is a freshwater lake about 8 miles (13 km.) wide by about 12 miles (19 km.) long, and 150 ft. (46 m.) deep.
5. It is located about 700 ft. (213 m.) below sea level.
6. It is the main freshwater source for much of Israel.
7. Because of its location, storms can arise quickly and drop down onto its surface without much warning.
8. The Sea of Galilee was located on a main crossroad of the known world during Christ ministry on earth. This international highway was called the “Via Maris” (Way of the Sea), and linked travel between the three continents of, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
9. Travelers from these 3 continents were forced to use this route as there were few other options for traveling to and from each continent. This was so because there was a desert to the east that was impassible due to lack of water, and the Mediterranean Sea was located to the west which was not a realistic option for travel as it was expensive, and ships were scarce.
10. The Via Maris passed right along the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, and there are old ruins and markers showing its existence.
11. The north shore of the Sea of Galilee was even more traveled than the roads and routes leading through Jerusalem.
12. Oftentimes, we might think Christ was hiding out somewhere in a remote location. However, just the opposite was true. He chose the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee (and Capernaum was located at a key place along this route) as a center stage so His message would reach as many people as possible in the world.
13. By spending most of His ministry time in the northern Galilee area, Christ’s miracles would travel by word of mouth to the ends of the earth. This laid the groundwork and sowed the seeds of the Gospel to the rest of the known world so that the evangelization work done later by the apostles would be easier and more acceptable to those who heard the message about Christ.
Historical Background
1. Abraham entered the Promised Land through the gateway of the Sea of Galilee when he first journeyed from Ur of the Chaldeans.
2. In Matthew 4 we find that Jesus established his home ministry base in the town of Capernaum which is located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
3. At least 6 of the 12 disciples were from right around the Sea of Galilee. These were Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, and Philip.
4. According to Acts 1:11, the rest of the disciples were from the Galilee area as well.

Capernaum, the town of Jesus
Kefar Nahum is the town which was the center of Jesus’ ministry in northern Galilee and the town of where Peter’s mother-in-law lived.
Located on the north-west side of the lake of Galilee, the ruins of Capernaum are divided into two sites: the Franciscan and the Greek Orthodox.
Unlike Jerusalem and other touristy ancient places in Israel, Capernaum seems to be untouched, still in its raw form. Just by walking here, and looking at the lake, the hills, the mountains, we felt connected to its history. It is as if we could almost see Jesus walking on these shores, looking at the same hills.
And besides the breathtaking nature, Capernaum has fascinating ruins. A 4th-century synagogue built on top of the original one where Jesus taught, a house which is believed to be the house of Simon Peter the apostle, and much more.
Join us in this episode as we explore this fascinating place.
Season 2, Episode 5
* Narration correction: The land was purchased on 1894, not 1908.

NOVEMBER 13, 2010—Capernaum is one of our stops in our Gospel Tour around Galilee.
Capernaum is a prominent place in the Holy Bible being being the center of Jesus' adult life ministry. There are varying schools of thought on whether He resided in Capernaum Himself or if He just frequently visited the place to preach, although the leading theory is that He probably lived with Peter in the latter's house in Capernaum.
Unlike many of the Gospel-time cities and towns that remain as functioning cities/town in the present time (e.g. Nazareth, Bethlehem, Cana), the town of Capernaum seems to have whittled in the past 2000 years. What remains now are just its ruins. Tourists visit it in droves for being the Town of Jesus but the town itself is long gone, and this, apparently, has been prophesied by the prophets and also by Jesus himself in the Bible.
This is a short slideshow video presentation of our photos and video clips during our visit at the ruins of Capernaum. Enjoy watching.

House of Caiaphas: Peter's Denial of Christ, Jerusalem, Israel, Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu!
See the place where Peter denied Christ three times, where Christ was condemned, where He spent the night in a cold dungeon, along with everything else that took place there. Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu marks the spot.
Location
1. The House of Caiaphas, also known as the Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu (cock's crow in Latin) is located on the eastern slope of Mount Zion, just outside the Old City of Jerusalem.
2. It can be accessed by Malki Tsedek Street
3. It is administered by the Roman Catholic Church.
Historical Background
1. The church consists of four levels: (1) the upper church (2) the middle church (3) the guardroom, and (4) the cistern (dungeon).
2. According to tradition, the church is the believed site of the House of Caiaphas.
3. A Byzantine church was built on this site in 457 AD.
4. It was later destroyed by Muslims in 1010.
5. It was rebuilt by the Crusaders in 1102 and given its present name.
6. It was destroyed in 1219 by the Turks.
7. Later, a chapel was built in 1300.
8. The church fell in ruins again by 1320.
9. The church that exists today was rebuilt in 1931.
Places of Interest
1. In the Courtyard of the church is a statue that recalls the events of Peter’s denial of Jesus. It shows Peter, the rooster that crowed, a maid, a servant, and a Roman soldier.
2. On the roof of the church is a rooster on a black cross, a symbol of Peter’s denial of Christ before the cock crowed.
3. The main sanctuary, located on the first floor, contains large multi-colored mosaics portraying figures from the New Testament.
4. On the second floor is a chapel that utilizes stone from ancient grottos as its walls. It also has mosaics from a 5th-century Byzantine church that previously existed at this site.
5. Above the cistern is the Guard Room. It overlooks the cistern (dungeon).
6. On the lower floor is a cistern (dungeon) where it’s believed Christ was placed the night after He was tried and condemned by Caiaphas.
7. Ruins and excavations outside the church at ground level.
8. A walkway with steps that run beside the church that was used for ascending and descending from Mount Zion to the Kidron Valley.
• They were most likely used by Jesus and His disciples as they went from the Upper Room, where they celebrated the Passover meal on Mount Zion, to the Garden of Gethsemane.
• Later, Christ would use these same steps as He was brought from Gethsemane, which led through the Kidron Valley, to the House of Caiaphas.
9. Upper viewing area where many sites can be seen. One of them is the Akeldama Monastery, which marks the place called the Field of Blood. The religious leaders purchased this property with the money Judas through at their feet just before he went and hanged himself.
