My Town (New Town Utopia) LYRICS
Now there’s a place that you might now, just down the A13..
it gets it’s share of knocks and mockery..
And I’ll be the first to say that it aint exactly paradise
But I know it sure as hell beats where I’ve been!
It was bombed out London ’49, we were up to our necks in squalor and grime..
And an outside bog that we shared with the rest of the street!
There was smog in your face and no green space
and even Her Maj said it was a disgrace
So old Lewis Silkin’s act was made complete.
Well we all moved down with tools in our ‘ands, it was all us boys what built this town
We’d never seen so many fields of green!
Like western pioneers we came, with our East End hearts to the Essex plains
To build a town like you have never seen.
It was put up quick with concrete mix and though some might call it Brutalist
I was a model modern marvel of a town
No smokin’ factories down the street, t’was all mod cons and gardens neat
Estates with parks and boating lakes abound!
INSTRUMENTAL
Well I remember nights we used to spar, in that old Bullseye market bar.. but we would still be pals and drink our fill
The beer was weak and the talk was cheap, but sometimes you could pay next week
If you were being served by Laindon Lil.
Well over the years they’ve changed the gaff, they’ve took the best and left the naff
And some of the things they took I’ll never forgive
Council lifers without a clue, who think they know what’s best for you
But it’s the real people what make the place you live. DONE!
So who cares if it often mocked, coz I know how it is and was.. its the nicest place I’ve ever lived by far
I’ve made it me own and in my heart it’s home.. and even if I sometimes moan
It’s my town.. New town utopia!
Coz where your heart is, thats your home and you can bet I’ll never roam
from my town, New town utopia!

On 2/3 September, flying a BE2c (either 2092 or 2693) of No 39 (Home Defence) Squadron, Lt William Leefe Robinson shot down the German Army Schütte-Lanz airship SL11, commanded by Hauptmann Wilhelm Emil Schramm. Lt Robinson was awarded the Victoria Cross for his exploit.
On 22/23 September, flying BE2c 4112 of No 39 (HD) Squadron, 2Lt Frederick Sowrey shot down German Navy Zeppelin airship L32, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Werner Petersen. 4112 is preserved in Canada. 2Lt Sowrey was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
On 1/2 October, flying BE2c 4577 of No 39 (HD) Squadron, 2Lt Wulstan Tempest shot down German Navy Zeppelin airship L31, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy. 2Lt Tempest was awarded the DSO.
Lt.William Leefe Robinson VC
William Leefe Robinson VC (14 July 1895 – 31 December 1918) was the first British pilot to shoot down a German airship over Britain during the First World War. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was the first person to be awarded the VC for action in the UK.
On the night of 2/3 September 1916 over Cuffley, Hertfordshire, Lieutenant Robinson, flying a converted B.E.2c night fighter No. 2693, sighted a German airship – one of 16 which had left bases in Germany for a mass raid over England. The airship was the wooden-framed Schütte-Lanz SL 11, although at the time and for many years after, it was misidentified as Zeppelin L 21. Robinson made an attack at an altitude of 11,500 ft (3,500 m) approaching from below and closing to within 500 ft (150 m) raking the airship with machine-gun fire. As he was preparing for another attack, the airship burst into flames and crashed in a field behind the Plough Inn at Cuffley, killing Commander Hauptmann Wilhelm Schramm and his 15-man crew.
Lieutenant Tempest D.S.O.
Lieutenant Tempest decided to ignore orders to patrol the Thames and decided instead to climb higher to where the airships normally flew.
At that point one of the Zeppelin, identified as L-31, was picked out by searchlights.
The crew of Lieutenant Mathy's airship tried to escape the beams, but without success.
Lieutenant Tempest was flying higher and faster than the Zeppelin and was able to close in and despatch a succession of incendiary bullets into its massive frame, setting it alight.
As the giant airship began to lose height and the flames took hold, some of Lieutenant Mathy’s crew were seen to jump from the Zeppelin as it fell to the ground.
Wulstan Joseph Tempest was later promoted to Major and awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
Second Lieutenant Sowrey D.S.O.
On the evening of 23 September 1916, Second Lieutenant Sowrey launched from Sutton Farm at 2330 hours in a Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2c to patrol toward Joyce Green. Flying at 13,000 feet, he spotted Zeppelin L32 at about 0110 hours and closed with it. He fired three drums of incendiary ammunition into the belly of the gasbag before it exploded into flame. There were no survivors from the aircrew; most of the bodies recovered were charred and burned. The burning wreckage at Billericay drew enormous crowds.[8] Sowrey received the Distinguished Service Order for his feat,[9] which was gazetted on 4 October 1916.[10] That same day, Temporary Second Lieutenant Sowrey was nominated for a regular commission in the Fusiliers.[11] Shortly thereafter, on 1 December 1916, he was appointed a Flight Commander with the accompanying rank of Temporary Captain.
