The Johnston Collection | BEING MODERN | William Johnston: His Residence & Collection
The exhibition BEING MODERN | William Johnston: His Residence & Collection held at The Johnston Collection from 13 February 2017 – 30 May 2017 celebrated the designers and interior style of the Georgian era, a period that has been so influential in the way we live today.
BEING MODERN is a restaging of The Johnston Collection’s first exhibition by foundation director, Judith Thompson and architect, Peter Lovell in 1990 when the museum was first opened to the public.
This elegant exhibition presented Fairhall exhibition-house recreated as an English inspired domestic interior with the museum’s extraordinary collection of items from the period rearranged throughout the exhibition-house. johnstoncollection.org

rubbish collection in Australia well ahead then rest of the world,I discoverd that when I was in Europe. They are still using 3 people there to collect it on one truck. Could be they want more people to be employed, but I'm not sure in that.

JANET LAURENCE: THE PALM AT THE END OF THE MIND | 8 Jul 2019 - 17 Sep 2019
Janet Laurence, one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artists, explored The Johnston Collection alongside her own creative practices - collecting and saving, nature and the environment - within the context of 'Fairhall' exhibition-house.
William Johnston’s own collecting and gathering from around the world, along with his love of gardening, underpinned and reflected Laurence’s ideas. Johnston found comfort, beauty and solace as he collected plants on his international travels, created, nurtured, assembled and loved his own gardens with care.
Laurence's exhibition aimed to challenge the conventions of our exhibition spaces and the relationships to nature and culture, collecting and discovery, and the natural environment, internalised within Fairhall.
This exhibition was part of the continuing ‘house of ideas’ project series where TJC commissions guest artists to use Fairhall as a site-specific installation space to reconceptualise the exhibition-house and explore its many layers of meaning. By doing so, The Collection continues to consider old objects in new ways.

OBJECT LESSONS | WILLIAM JOHNSTON: His Residence & Collection
OBJECT LESSONS presents a new opportunity to see significant objects, gathered by William Johnston, that create an English Georgian-inspired domestic interior in his East Melbourne house.
In The Green Drawing Room, OBJECT LESSONS creates a relaxed British-style interior found in India around the 1830s. The early 19th century British-Indian items in the Collection, along with other elements, fashions a reposeful reception space in which to display a gentleman’s collection.
By reinterpreting The Green Drawing Room as an early 19th century British colonial interior, the exhibition provides visitors with an insight into what it was like to live as an Englishman abroad.
After exhausting his sources in England, antique dealer William Johnston turned his sights and travels to India, and especially Calcutta, which became Johnston's favourite place to replenish stock for his retail shop, Kent Antiques in High St, Armadale.
The exhibition is based on, and re-presents aspects of the original arrangement of William Johnston’s collection in Fairhall, as it was when it first opened to the public as an exhibition-house in 1990.
This exhibition continues exploring one of the themes underpinning The Johnston Collection, that ‘Old is New'.
