Hitting the trail running from Killarney to Kenmare along the Kerry Way
A lovely Saturday in November 2018, I got an itch for hike / trail run and checked out the Killarney to Kenmare part of the Kerry Way. It is a lovely section and it was a highlight of runs done. It was in part due to the lack of prior arraignment that it just happened and was a smashing day out.
I ran in La Sportiva Cross over and wore the Montane Jaws 10.

I made great time in good weather, not too hot and not too cold, if you have any queries, please drop us a comment below... :-)

Route Background:
Stage 9 of The Kerry Way long distance walking route from Kenmare to Killarney or vice versa is known as the Old Kenmare Road. This is a moderate to strenuous 5 to 8 hour (24 km) walking route through amazing scenery and the Killarney National Park and has a number of steep and steady climbs and descents.
It is probably one of the most popular stages of the Kerry Way. Starting from Kenmare is follows a well worn path between Peakeen and Knockanaguish Mountains into the Windy Gap with superb views of the MacGillicuddy Reeks Mountains. From there it passes Mangerton Mountain, Torc Mountain and Waterfall and finally Muckross House, Gardens and Traditional Farm.
The Kerry Way is a long distance walking trail in County Kerry, Ireland and the longest of Irelands National Waymarked Trails at approximately 215 km (134 miles) long. The walking route officially begins and ends in Killarney but you can join the trail at any number of points along its length. The Kerry Way takes in the entire Iveragh Peninsula in an anti clockwise loop and is the walking alternative to the world famous Ring of Kerry scenic drive which follows a similar route.
Typically the entire route is broken down into 9 key stages of approximate equal length or duration. We have also broken some of these longer stages into smaller part to allow everyone irrespective of fitness or time available to experience one of the best and varied walks in Ireland.
Use our Map of Ireland and Sat Nav tool to get directions to any of the stage start points and our detailed maps and GPS on our ActiveME App to find and follow the walking route live on screen and keep on track.
Thanks to ActiveME, for the trail spec above.

Hallo Leute,

Herzlichen Dank an meinen Mann.
---------------
The Kerry Way (Irish: Slí Uíbh Ráthaigh) is the best known and most popular long-distance hiking trail in Ireland and leads once around the Iveragh Peninsula on a total of 220 km and 5480 m altitude (depending on the alternative route). Start and finish is Killarney. The long-distance hiking trail can be taken in both directions and can be started or finished at any stage.
The hike is moderately difficult over large stretches in dry conditions, but can be difficult in wet conditions and muddy and swampy soils. The greatest challenges on this route are not necessarily the many metres of ascents and descents, but the many sections through swampy areas. Even if it doesn't look that way in the video, the paths are difficult to walk and you only make very slow progress and you always have to see how to get where, this costs time and concentration. That's why you often need 8 to more than 10 hours for a stage here, the kilometres are not comparable to hiking times in our landscapes.
The long-distance hiking trail is only suitable for trained, well-equipped and well-prepared hikers! Rainwear and water-repellent, high hiking boots are essential, hiking poles are advisable. The route is usually well marked, but it is still recommended to carry good topographic maps and/or a GPS device. Mobile phone reception is not always available in the mountains!

Cycling through Ireland - Killarney to Ladies View in County Kerry (Part #1)
Killarney is a town on the shores of Lough Leane in southwest Ireland’s County Kerry. It’s a stop on the Ring of Kerry scenic drive, and the start and finishing point of the 200-km Kerry Way walking trail. The town's 19th-century buildings include St. Mary’s Cathedral. Across the bridge from the cathedral is Killarney National Park. Victorian mansion Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farms sits in the park.

You NEED to Do This in Killarney - Ireland
Boating through Killarney National Park and Biking through the Gap of Dunloe. I didn't know Ireland was such an adventurous destination.
I was in Killarney to attend TBEX (Travel Blog Exchange) and one of the tours they put together, through Failte Ireland, was to boat across Lough Leane and cycle through the Gap of Dunloe, both close to Killarney.
We were pick up at the INEC (Ireland's National Event Center) and transported to Ross Castle on Lough Leane. We took boats, provided by Gap of Dunloe Traditional Boat Tours, across the lake to an island with ancient monastery ruins and then navigating through Muckross Lake and Upper Lake before being dropped off at Lord Brandon's Cottage.
From there we mounted our bikes, provided by Ireland Walk Hike Bike, to cycle up the Mountains of East Kerry for the 11 kilometer road through the Gap of Dunloe. The sights were incredible. It did rain on and off the whole day but it just added to the experience and made it more memorable.
We stopped at Heather Restaurant for a delicious meal and the best Irish Coffee I have ever had. Our last stop of the tour was Beaufort Bar, a pub that is as traditional as you can find with live music and dance performers to welcome all us bloggers to Ireland.
It was an amazing first day in Ireland for me and I highly suggest Killarney as a stop on your Ireland trip.
