He led England to a 1980 clean sweep, but Bill Beaumont admits I never went to the gym
He led England to a 1980 clean sweep, but Bill Beaumont admits... I never went to the gym. Bill Beaumont, with his ready, deep laugh and avuncular air, is no nostalgic hankerer for a long lost age.
There is no rebuke to the retinue of coaches, conditioning men and nutritionists who will prepare the modern England side within an inch of their medical lives for Saturday’s clash with mighty, high-flying Ireland in the Six Nations match that could do much to shape the course of rugby’s World Cup year.
But, reflecting on the imperishable 1980 Grand Slam-winning team he captained and the spirit of the times, Beaumont reflects: ‘It was an innocent era in a way.’
This rock of a man, now 66, thickset, hands bigger than shovels, chairman of World Rugby, deputy lieutenant of Lancashire, and awaiting the sword’s touch that will next month confer on him what is sure to be a well-worn knighthood, says: ‘Never went to the gym ever.
‘I did a hundred press-ups and a hundred sit-ups and that was my training. We thought we were quite professional, if not paid, in our outlook. Every night when I wasn’t going down to the club or on county training I’d run about five miles.
‘Now it is a prerequisite of tours and every club — where are the gyms? It was different then because we didn’t know otherwise.
‘I was reading the other day something Paddy Crerand said about the Busby Babes. They would go to Davyhulme Golf Club before their matches. Busby would smoke a cigarette in the corner. They would all eat steak apart from George Best, who’d have beans on toast.
‘That is how it was for us. Steak and a pint of beer the night before. I didn’t touch wine — couldn’t afford it. Traditionally, we would go to the cinema the night before England games at Twickenham, or maybe a show, and then return for a couple of sandwiches and bed.
‘In the morning I’d have a big breakfast and then nothing before the game. Crikey, it was a full English — the works. Now I see players just eating the whites of their eggs and I’m thinking the yolk is the best part, the bit you dunked the other things into.
‘Actually, Fran Cotton went to the gym — that was unusual — and some of the players did manual work, such as Phil Blakeway, who was involved in fruit and veg. He did a lot of lifting all day.
‘You enjoyed a beer. Steve Smith (England scrum half) said to me when I started playing international rugby that you need to treat every game as if it is your last because one day it will be. So Saturday night after a game —because we were all amateur players and nobody had any money — you’d find out from the opposition where you could get some free drinks.’
Beaumont was born a month premature on March 9, 1952, into a smart family of the northern English middle class. His mother’s side — the Blackledges, after whom his second Christian name is taken — were successful commercially: they established their eponymous textile business in Chorley in 1888.
Their sport was cricket and Bill’s uncle, Joe Blackledge, was the last amateur to captain Lancashire, in 1962.
The Beaumont family were academics and into rugby. Bill’s grandfather, who won a Military Cross fighting the Turks in Mesopotamia — roughly modern-day Iraq — was a revered master at Blackpool Grammar School.
Bill’s father went to Cambridge before marrying into the Blackledge’s family business. Bill, by his own admission and to the chagrin of several relatives, was uninterested in formal learning at Ellesmere College, then an all-boys public school in Shropshire. He was markedly better at rugby and cricket.
He joined Fylde Rugby Club in 1969 aged 17 and, having worked his way up through the ranks and played for super-strong Lancashire and North sides on his journey to England fame, remained there until he was told in 1982 by a neurologist that his career was over — too many concussions. He was 29 and

Wedding Guestbook presented to party guests by an amazing entertainer
This is wedding guestbook presented by the amazing entertainer; DJ Richards. It is a great way to add something fun and unique to your wedding experience.
The concept of a wedding guestbook is age old; the guests write down special words of love, affection, advice and anecdotes, so that the happy couple have something special to look back upon to to help them remember their day and all who made it so lovely. Richard Porter will take this concept and turn it into an entertainment feature that will make your wedding stand out!
Of course its a risky business, you never know what your guests might say, but that's what makes it so much fun! With advice varying from always let your wife buy shoes to always take your top off in an argument you cant go wrong! It is of course up to you whose advice you listen to, if anyone's at all!
Some clients have expressed concern that an activity like this may take up too much time and stop the flow of the party but this video proves that it does anything but. Time wise a live guestbook will only take up a maximum time of two songs. As Richard Porter delivers the guestbook the guests feel involved and part of the reception. Everyone knows that laughing is an excellent way to break the ice and relieve any underlying tension. At the end of this video we see the dancing commence once more and with great enthusiasm and excitement as everyone feels relaxed and is in the mood to get the party started once again.

Dan Forshaw is one of the most passionate and charismatic musicians on the British Jazz scene. Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, Dan studied in both London and New York and has played all over the world with many different ensembles ranging from jazz quartet’s to cathedral choirs. He is one of the UK’s leading experts on John Coltrane and has written a number of published articles on the music and theology of ‘Trane’. Tim Price, Professor of saxophone in New York and a former teacher of Dan said, ‘Forshaw has reached a strong level of musicality, depth and technique that very few players have….he is a breath of fresh air, ‘hear him!’
Dan grew up in the small Lancashire fishing town of Fleetwood. Opera star Alfie Boe lived a few doors away from Dan and music was a big part of Dan’s childhood. In his youth he performed for Royalty, U.S. President Bill Clinton and for the opening of Tony Blair’s first conference as Prime Minister! Dan was taught by Ray Wilkes, a legend on the Northern Jazz scene and a former member of Cedar Walton’s band in New York. Dan started picking up gigs aged 14 and by 16 Dan was on the road with the ‘Amazing Blues Brothers Soul Revue Tour.’
After meeting Branford Marsalis at the RNCM in April 2003, Branford invited Dan to study with him in the USA, which Dan did in March / April 2005. Whilst in New York, Dan was inspired by the many amazing musicians he heard & upon returning to England, he moved to London in the summer of 2005. Dan’s target was to return to New York, but meeting and marrying his wife Katy led to a move to Belfast in 2007.
Cambridge and beyond…Dan is now based in Cambridge where he teaches saxophone through his award-winning website, Cambridge Saxophone.com. Dan still maintains an active performance schedule with regular tours, residences and his ‘Jazz Vespers‘ project, that has seen Dan on Prime Time National TV, (BBC One,) leading jazz events at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Ely Cathedral and the at new home for Jazz Vespers in London, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
Dan is an active ‘Vlogger’, (his YouTube channel now has close to 10,000 subscribers in twenty countries), and he enjoys photography, sport and most of all spending time with his young family.

Eccles, Greater Manchester, England
Advert Ref: 3691
Business Description
Preferred Commercial is delighted to offer for sale this popular social club, which was established in 1975 and which has been in our client's careful hands since 2008. The business is only now being placed onto the market due to a change in our client's circumstances. The social club trades 7 days a week and generates a turnover in the region of £300,000 with a gross profit of 40%. The business serves a range of beers, wines and spirits and boasts bowling green facilities to the rear of the premises. The property has multiple bars including a members' bar which boasts seating for approximately 80 people, a function room with seating for approximately 120 people and a snooker room which has seating for approximately 60 people. A new owner could increase turnover by embarking on a modest marketing campaign as there is currently little promotion in place. The social club has earned an excellent reputation in the surrounding area and benefits from a loyal customer base and much repeat trade. We feel this is an ideal opportunity to acquire a thriving social club with scope for future growth. Early negotiations with Preferred Commercial must come highly recommended.

England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain, which lies in the North Atlantic, and includes over 100 smaller islands, such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight.

SUMMARY
=======
The area now called England was first inhabited by modern humans during the Upper Palaeolithic period, but takes its name from the Angles, a Germanic tribe deriving its name from the Anglia peninsula, who settled during the 5th and 6th centuries. England became a unified state in the 10th century, and since the Age of Discovery, which began during the 15th century, has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider world. The English language, the Anglican Church, and English law – the basis for the common law legal systems of many other countries around the world – developed in England, and the country's parliamentary system of government has been widely adopted by other nations. The Industrial Revolution began in 18th-century England, transforming its society into the world's first industrialised nation.England's terrain is chiefly low hills and plains, especially in central and southern England. However, there is upland and mountainous terrain in the north (for example, the Lake District and Pennines) and in the west (for example, Dartmoor and the Shropshire Hills). The capital is London, which has the largest metropolitan area in both the United Kingdom and the European Union. England's population of over 55 million comprises 84% of the population of the United Kingdom, largely concentrated around London, the South East, and conurbations in the Midlands, the North West, the North East, and Yorkshire, which each developed as major industrial regions during the 19th century. The Kingdom of England – which after 1535 included Wales – ceased being a separate sovereign state on 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union put into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulting in a political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, Great Britain was united with the Kingdom of Ireland (through another Act of Union) to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1922 the Irish Free State seceded from the United Kingdom, leading to the latter being renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
