52nd light infantry Aldershot to Ypres
A TALK BY DOCTOR SIMON HARRIS ON 10 NOVEMBER 2014 IN THE McDONALD GALLERY, GURKHA MUSEUM
This talk on the 52nd Light Infantry (the second Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry) covers Mobilization, the Advance and retreat from Mons, the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Aisne, the First Battle of Ypres. Particular attention is given to the 52nd’s unpleasant fighting at la Cour de Soupir and the destruction of the Kaiser’s finest troops, the Prussian Guards, in Nonne Bosschen Wood precisely 100 years ago on 11 November. The talk will be illustrated by a powerpoint presentation with many original and rare images including an aerial photograph of the Nonne Bosschen Wood area taken in 1914.
Simon Harris is a retired consultant anaesthetist who is married with two grown up children. He has given many talks both in the U.K. and overseas. Simon Harris’ publications include ‘Sir Cloudesley Shovell Stuart Admiral’, RBK A Very Parfit Gentil Knight, and ‘The history of the 52nd Light Infantry in the Great War 1914-1918’. Simon Harris first became interested in the 52nd thirty years ago whilst investigating the life of his great-uncle, who was mortally wounded whilst serving with the regiment on the Somme in 1916. Later, this led to him researching and then writing the full history of the Regiment in the Great War which was published in 2012. He has walked virtually all the 52nd’s battlefields in that war.

STORYLINE:
British soldiers of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Green Jackets were settling into their new home near Basra on Thursday, having arrived from England two days ago.
They are currently based at Al Shieba, a military airport near Basra.
The 650 troops are part of a force of around 1,400 extra British soldiers being sent to Basra to strengthen the UK force's ability to restore security in the south of the country.
These men recently flew in from Brize Norton in southern England after leaving their base near Blackpool in the north of the country.
Further reinforcements from another unit - the 2nd battalion Light Infantry - are expected to arrive from another base in Cyprus in the next few days.
These troops will be specifically concerned with training Iraqi Civil Defence Force personnel in the necessary skills to make them an effective peace keeping force.
The new units join a British contingent of around 10,000 soldiers in southern Iraq.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
The Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's) was a light infantry infantry regiment of the British Army, which served under various titles from 1685 to 1959. In 1959, the regiment was amalgamated with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry to form the Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry which was again amalgamated, in 1968, with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, the King's Shropshire Light Infantry and the Durham Light Infantry to form The Light Infantry. In 2007, however, The Light Infantry was amalgamated further with the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and the Royal Green Jackets to form The Rifles.

Unlike other regiments, we are casual; and prefer to focus upon having cooperative and accomplished fun within the game as opposed to hosting competitive events and tournaments. While this may make you believe that we are any less competitive in public lobbies, allow us to assure you we're not.
Above all, we play this game to have a lot of fun - but we're able to coordinate attacks, flanks, firing lines and all other basic and complex wargame strategies.
