Canada Geese Swim Between Lily Pads – Aug. 1, 2017
Watch this gaggle of geese wade past the water lilies on the Sapsucker Woods Pond and congregate at the cut through.
Watch LIVE at AllAboutBirds.org/PondCam for news, updates, and additional information about the PondCam.
Sapsucker Woods Sanctuary earned its name 100 years ago when the first nesting pair of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers in the Cayuga Basin were discovered here by Lab founder Arthur A. Allen and noted avian artist Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Since that fateful discovery in 1909, it has become the home of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and a center of discovery for over 100,000 annual visitors. Over 200 species of bird can be seen here, including rarities like American Bittern, Scarlet Tanager, and many of the beautiful warblers that migrate here to breed. In addition, numerous turtles and frogs can be seen around the pond, and healthy populations of deer, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and mink are also frequently encountered. The special status of Sapsucker Woods has been recognized by the Tompkins County Environmental Management Council, designating it a Unique Natural Area.
Sapsucker Woods also hosts the expansive Johnson Visitors’ Center, containing state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits that let you explore the world of birds through sound and video, a stunning collection of avian artwork (including the nation’s largest collection of Fuertes artwork on display), and a two-story glassed-in observatory for viewing the sanctuary and its inhabitants.

The Dock
At four am we were up, towing out what’s now known as The Dock” in Bali for this concept shoot. We asked ourselves, what does the future look like? A cashless society? Self-driving cars? We’ll leave the wavepools for Kelly Slater and co. Instead, we envisioned lineup where you don’t have to paddle. Which turns out to be a rather dangerous affair.
“The dock’s been scary,” said Ozzie Wright. “At one stage I just came up, got my board and saw it coming right at me. I like the chaos of it. The whole time everybody was like, “Where are we going!? Where are we going!? That was the fun bit. I kept thinking what if the tip was on the beach at a little shorey? No paddling, just run out, jump on a wave surf it to the beach then run back out and jump on another one. That’d be so much fun.”
“It would just kill you if it hit you, yeah?” asked Noa Deane, after the fact. “What’s it weigh? Half a tonne? When it wears a wave on the head it kicks like a snake. Like, Balaram jumped up and went six feet in the air. Then he landed on the wire, so sketchy. It whips right at the end because it’s connected to a cable which adds extra tension.”
Now that the tension’s relieved, we invite you to loosen your belt and enjoy “The Dock” as ridden by Noa, Ozzie, Yago Dora, Mitch Coleborn, Balaram Stack and Imaikalani Devault. After all, what's fun without a little heightened heart rate?

Most ENORMOUS Plants Ever
Most of us consider ourselves fortunate when a sprout at the very least grows from the soil when we plant our own plants. But let’s take a look at some of the biggest plants that grow on this earth.
Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos.
8. Giant Pumpkins
You can purchase a pumpkin all sorts of sizes, whether they be mini pumpkins, regular medium pumpkins, and the monster of them all--the giant pumpkin. Pumpkins, a type of winter squash, get characterized by their usual orange color and ribbed skin. During the fall, you see pumpkins everywhere if you live in the United States or Canada, as pumpkin may be incorporated as a popular flavor in drinks and desserts, and even decoration. The biggest pumpkins can weigh more than 1,000 to 2,000 pounds.
7. Baobab Tree
These types of trees thrive in the landscapes of Australia, Arabia, Madagascar, and mainland Africa. The term “baobab” includes 9 different species of trees, all known to reach tall heights, ranging from 16 feet or 5 meters to 98 feet or 30 meters tall. Sometimes, the ones that don’t grow to be as tall may still have wide trunks, with diameters between 23 to 26 feet or 7 to 11 meters wide. Inside their trunks, these baobab trees can store up to 32,000 US gallons or 120,000 liters of water, their fruits close to the size of a coconut.
6. Neptune Grass
In scientific terms, you’d call Neptune grass Posidonia oceanica, and either way this seagrass sounds really cool. This species lives endemic to the Mediterranean Sea, found at depths of 114.8 feet or 35 meters at the deepest. From the shore, you may even see a ball of dried up Neptune grass washed up from the ocean, a lot like tumbleweed. You can only find this species in the Mediterranean, taking up a surface area of 15,000 square miles or 38,000 square kilometers. This grass can grow up to 4.9 feet or 1.5 meters long.
5. Lily Pads
One of the biggest lily pads thrive in in the Salado River in Paraguay, a popular tourist destination for people who want a glimpse of the huge victoria plants on the water--water lilies that grow large green leaves. The largest of this type of leaf can be up to 9.8 feet or 3 meters in diameter, with their stalks as long as 26 feet or 8 meters. One species is endemic to the Amazon River basin, while the other can be found in the Parana-Paraguay basin, slightly smaller than its amazonian cousin. The pads sit over the surface of the river, named after Queen Victoria.
4. Rafflesia Arnoldii
The largest individual flower in the world lives in the rainforests of Sumatra, belonging to a parasitic genus. Unlike the titan arum, which is a collection of individual flowers, the Rafflesia arnoldii grows on its own. The flower, named after British botanist Joseph Arnold, was first discovered during the 18th century. It grows to 3 feet or 1 meter in diameter, with the largest specimen ever found measuring to 3.4 feet or 105 centimeters. In Indonesia, the country recognized it as the national rare flower, one of three national flowers alongside the moon orchid and the white jasmine.
3. The Talipot Plant
It takes as much as 60 years for the talipot palm to grow fruit and flowers, and it flowers only once. The largest ever found was 82 feet or 25 meters tall with a stem diameter or 4.3 feet or 1.3 meters. People cultivate this plant in Sri Lanka and South India, its leaves used for thatching. It has one of the largest inflorescence in the world, consisting of up to a couple million small flowers on a branch stalk.
2. Giant Sequoias
Experts list the giant sequoias as the largest living thing in the world by volume, as well as the largest lone tree ever. Giant sequoias only grow naturally in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. The oldest sequoia ever found had a ring count of 3,500 years--though most sequoias belong as some of the oldest living organisms in the world. Interestingly, they might have reached such heights and lifespan due to their fire resistant bark.

STRANGEST Places on Earth
When we consider doing a bit of traveling, we tend to think of heading to popular places like Paris, Cape Town or Thailand, yet there are places out there that defy our imagination, that are so unusual that they take our breath away, so next time you’re ready to book some flights, consider heading to some of these very intriguing places!

13 - Muynak, Uzbekistan…
What was once a busy port city on the Aral Sea is now a desert wasteland. The Soviet Union decided to drain the sea for irrigation purposes, ultimately destroying the port city. Now, the only remains are the once powerful vessels gathering dust in the desert.
12 - Tianzi Mountains, China…
Said to be the inspiration for various scenes in the movie Avatar, Tianzi Mountains are breath-taking and surreal. It’s said that 300 thousand years ago there was nothing but ocean there, but today there are towers of rocks and quartz sandstones making up this exquisite mountain range.
11 - The Door to Hell, Derweze, Turkmenistan…
This naturally occurring gas field has been burning for decades but didn’t begin its life naturally. Some engineers were working in the area trying to extract gas, but while they were busy, the ground underneath gave way and the rig collapsed into the crater. They were concerned that the hole would give off poisonous gas, so lit a fire in the hope the gas would burn out… four decades later, it continues to burn.
10 - Zhangye Danxia Landform, Gansu, China…
China seems to be spoilt for choice when it comes to spectacular mountain ranges, and these multi-coloured mountain ranges are full of red sandstone and mineral deposits. It’s taken over 20-million years for the multitude of colours to take full effect, but you have to admit that the wait is totally worth it!
9 - Badab-e-Surt, Iran…
Over the course of thousands of years, these exquisite travertine terraces have been forming in northern Iran. Travertine is formed by the calcium deposit in the water, which creates this type of limestone. These terraces have a reddish tint to them due to the large amount of iron oxide in one of the springs.
8 - Eternal Flame Falls, New York, USA…
For a long time, not many people were able to make their way to this unusual spot, where a flame glows brightly right underneath a waterfall. Now, thanks to the improvements to the access trail, visitors have been able to take in this spectacle.
7- Akodessewa Fetish Market, Togo…
As bizarre as this place is, I’m sure it’s not going to be high on your lists of must-see places! In Togo, a great portion of the population practise indigenous beliefs, which means they would require a number of items you wouldn’t be able to buy in your regular supermarket. Here you can buy skulls, flesh, shrunken heads and anything else your twisted mind can imagine.
6 - Root Bridges, Cherraopunji, India…
Nature can take 80% of the credit and humans the other 20%, as the locals here have taken the roots from the fig trees and guided them to make this incredible bridge, strong enough to hold humans.
5 - Hitsujiyama Park, Chichibu, Japan…
When you think of Japan, you generally think of their cherry blossoms, but Japan is also home to this stunning pink moss called shibazakura. When it’s spring, Shibazakura Hill in Hitsujiyama Park has this moss blossoming creating a carpet effect throughout the park. It’s quite something to see, but remember you have to head there in Spring, or you will be left disappointed.
4 - Chocolate Hills, Bohol Island, Philippines…
The Chocolate Hills of the Philippines derive their name from the way they resemble chocolate when they turn from their lush green to brown in the dry season. There are around 1,700 hills and they’re made up of coral deposits and as a result of water erosion.
3 - Caño Cristales, Colombia…
It’s not much of an unusual spot in the winter, but just wait for Summer and this river turns red. There’s a certain species of plant that grows making the river a deep shade of red. It’s not just red that you’ll see, but also yellow, green and blue. Referred to as the “river of five colors,” it had been closed to tourists for a number of years due to guerrilla activity in the area but was reopened again in 2009.
2 - Abrahams Lake, Western Alberta, Canada…
This intriguing lake has thousands of frozen bubbles trapped underneath the surface. It’s the plants underneath the water that release the air bubbles that get caught below the sheen of ice on top, creating a beautiful lily pad effect.
