The Largest Aircraft Ever Built By Britain: The Bristol Brabazon
With a wingspan greater than a Boeing 747, The Bristol Brabazon was the largest aircraft ever built by Britain. More a flying oceanliner than plane, it featured sleeping cabins, a dining room, a cocktail bar and lounge, and even a 23 seat movie theater.
The Brabazon was also fitted with cutting edge innovations. A fully pressurized, air conditioned cabin. Electric engine controls, and high-pressure hydraulics to operate its massive control surfaces. It’s enormous wing housed more than 16 thousand gallons of fuel, and eight of the most powerful piston engines available. While the first Brabazon used piston engines, later Brabazon were to use turboprop engines that were being developed by Bristol.
The Bristol Brabazon would have true transatlantic capability. Able to fly non-stop from London to New York against prevailing eastern winds. In the 1940’s, this would have been quite the feat. Transatlantic flights were almost always done in stages to allow for refueling.
Despite introducing new innovations, many of which influenced the future of aviation, the Brabazon’s driving philosophy was outdated. The Brabazon’s mission was to compete with ocean liners for ultra-wealthy passengers. But this lumbering, super-sized airliner would have been introduced with airlines for 1950’s, right around when the first jet airliners, like the De Havilland Comet, were taking to the skies. Aircraft like the Dash 80, which would become the 707, were also just around the corner, and would bring a transatlantic crossing down to as little as 7 hours.
After a massive design and development effort, Britain found itself stuck with a plane nobody actually wanted, designed for an era that no longer existed.The program was cancelled and the Brabazon, and half finished turboprop successor were sold for their weight in scrap. #BristolBrabazon #BritishAviation #WhiteElephant #Airplanes

2020 Arthritis Medication Ad Uses 1995 Supergrass Teen Anthem 'Alright'
Alright is a song by British alternative rock band Supergrass. It was released on their debut album I Should Coco on 3 July 1995. It was concurrently released on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie Clueless, which helped it become a big hit for the band. Alright received a great deal of airplay in the United Kingdom and peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart. The bona fide teen anthem, with its upbeat lyrics and cheerful piano tune, seemed to epitomise British youth culture at the time, when Britpop was at its height. The band's youthful appearance (lead singer Gaz Coombes had only just turned 19 when it was released) added weight to the lyrics. However, Coombes himself argued in an interview around October 1995, it wasn't written as an anthem. It isn't supposed to be a rally cry for our generation. The stuff about 'We are young/We run green...' isn't about being 19, but really 13 or 14. and just discovering girls and drinking.
Enbrel (etanercept) is a biopharmaceutical that treats autoimmune diseases by interfering with tumor necrosis factor (TNF, a soluble inflammatory cytokine) by acting as a TNF inhibitor. It has U.S. F.D.A. approval to treat rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis and ankylosing spondylitis. The FDA placed a black box warning on etanercept due to a number of serious infections associated with the drug. Serious infections and sepsis, including fatalities, have been reported with the use of etanercept including reactivation of latent tuberculosis and hepatitis B infections.

BOXING BOOTH recovers two iconic and contradictory public events - the traditional red pillar telephone box and the 17th century boxing booth - by combining them into a redefined piece of urban furniture. By installing a boxing bag inside, the typical red pillar telephone box is rediscovered, subverted by its new use as an outlet for physical discharge. As a public installation, this confessional space acquires an ambiguous dimension, exposing a particular act of individual avowal by framing it into general acceptance, and therefore underlining the truth that everything is permitted within its own social boundaries.
BOXING BOOTH is part of the Mayfest 2009: Bristol's festival of contemporary theatre, and can be found in front of the Bristol Old Vic theatre (UK), from the May 1 to 5.
