British Retreat Route Permission Metal Detecting with JHH!!
We scored an amazing permission after digging 6 hours! We gave it a short feel, but we have permission to come back anytime. We met an amazing person on this location who has so much history to share, we spoke a good long while with him and are super excited to help him with a project he invited us to be a part of!
This is the direct route of the british retreat after the battle of Monmouth AND actual first NJ settlers land of the First Lady of Middletown!
Penelope Van Princis Stout was born in 1622 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She married John Kent in 1640, and the couple sailed for New Amsterdam (now New York City) on Manhattan Island in the American colony of New Netherland. For unknown reasons, their ship ran aground at the coast of what is now Monmouth County, New Jersey. The ship’s other passengers decided to continue toward their destination on foot, but Penelope remained with her sick husband who was too weak to walk.
Penelope and her husband had not been in the woods very long when they were attacked by Native Americans and left for dead. But the woman was not killed – only stunned. She was horribly cut and mangled, her skull fractured, her left shoulder hacked, and a great cut across the abdomen caused her bowels to protrude. There was little hope of her ever recovering – but no one told her that!
After the Indians had gone, she crawled into a hollow tree nearby, and somehow managed to stay alive. On the seventh day, two Indians found her. Penelope prayed that they might end her misery, and the younger Indian was willing to oblige.
Saved by a Friend
The young man was ready to kill her, but the elder one stopped him. Throwing her over his shoulder, he carried her to his camp, where he sewed up her wounds with fish bone needles and vegetable fiber. Penelope lived with the aged Native American chief until she recovered, and then he took her to her countrymen in New Amsterdam.
In 1642, Penelope met Richard Stout who had left Nottingham, England, because of parental disapproval of his love affair with a girl they considered socially inferior. He had enlisted in the navy, served for seven years, and left his ship in New Amsterdam when his enlistment ended.
Richard found friends among some English settlers who had fled to New Amsterdam from neighboring colonies because of their religious beliefs. Among them were Lady Deborah Moody and her son, Sir Henry Moody. Together they obtained a charter from the Dutch governor to found the first English settlement on Long Island at Gravesend.
Penelope and Richard Stout were married in 1644, when she was 22 and he was 40. They settled at Gravesend on Plantation No. 18, which he had purchased five years earlier. In 1646, he received lot 16 where he grew tobacco. By 1657, seventeen of his twenty acres were under cultivation. In 1661, he bought an adjoining farm, and became the largest landowner of the group.
First Lady of Middletown
After the English took over the rule of New Amsterdam, Penelope persuaded her husband and a number of their neighbors at Gravesend to move across the Lower Bay to what is now eastern New Jersey, near the village of the Indian chief who had saved her life.
The nameless chief was a frequent visitor to the Stout home, and one day, he came to warn her that the tribes were coming to attack the settlement. He urged her to take her family and flee to safety in his canoe. When she told Richard the news, he refused to believe it, but she gathered her children and paddled away.
After Penelope left, Richard reconsidered and gathered the men of the settlement together. They armed themselves and sent the other women and children in canoes to wait offshore, while they prepared to watch all night. At midnight the Indians came.
When the whites attacked, the Native Americans, armed with only bows and arrows, were soon on the run. Then Richard Stout walked out into the open and demanded a meeting. When the whites agreed to buy the native lands on which they had settled, an alliance was formed.
As the settlement grew into the town of Middletown, Richard was appointed to assist in laying out the lots. And Penelope became known as the First Lady of Middletown.
Thank you so much for stopping by, we truly appreciate it! We hope you had fun, although we are serious about saving history we like to use our videos to include some not so serious fun along the way :)

Roadhouse Blue - UK Truckstops and Roadside Cafes
Transport cafes in the UK - a fast disappearing retreat for the professional driver and weary traveller.
Quirky glamping accommodation inspired by fairytales
(22 Jun 2018) LEAD IN
Camping and caravanning holidays in the UK are booming - with visitor numbers expected to rise by several million in the next two years.
With demand growing, holiday makers are being offered more and more quirky and unusual places to go 'glamping'.
STORY-LINE
Deep in the woodland in Sussex, England, at the foot of the South Downs, these treehouses look like they're straight out of a child's storybook.
With wooden turrets, rickety staircases and trees growing out of their roofs they look like they could be home to a wizard or woodland creature.
But actually 'Higgledy' and 'Piggledy' as they're known are the latest in luxury glamping accommodation at Blackberry Wood campsite and are fitted with hot water, wifi and quirky yet comfortable decor.
Such is the attention to detail that went into building them they took owner Tim Johnson around three years to complete.
Originally we were just looking at some fairly basic sorts of treehouses, but anyway we got a little bit carried away! And I hate straight lines, especially when you're in a woodland setting, you just want something that is curvy and moves around with the forms of nature really, he explains.
Both treehouses sleep up to four adults and are self contained with bathrooms, kitchens and outside terraces. They are also fully insulated and heated and have wood burning stoves.
Johnson says he gets a lot of his inspiration for his fanciful designs from the Spanish architect Gaudi. However he admits his children's storybooks may have influenced his fairytale treehouses:
I've got young kids, so when you're reading all these fairytale books and things like that you're thinking along the same wavelength as them. So, with the first tree house, Higgledy, I wanted to have a sort of turret on it and have a nice little window seat where you could look out over out into the woods, he says.
A stay in a treehouse comes at a cost, however, at around 240 British Pounds (320 US Dollars) per night during high season.
However they're not the only whimsical accommodation available here. Visitors can also stay in a 'Curvy Cabin', an Airstream trailer, a 1964 Routemaster double decker bus or a 1965 Wessex Search and Rescue Helicopter! There is also a regular campsite option.
James Hanson came all the way from Nottingham, England, to stay with his wife in Higgledy and says they were blown away by the intricacy and attention to detail. On why he chose this type of accommodation for his holiday he says:
We just wanted something interesting and different and something where people just went 'oooh' when they heard about it. And looking at them all this was a bit different again, it wasn't just a house on stilts it was sort of cool and designed around the trees.
And it seems we can expect to see more holidaymakers choosing similar breaks over the coming years. According to market researcher Mintel UK more than 17 million camping and caravanning trips were taken by UK adults in 2016 - and they expect this figure to rise to more than 21 million by 2020. The Brexit effect is still being suggested as a significant reason more people in the UK are choosing to 'staycation'.
Out in Chorleywood in Hertfordshire a rather large owl is keeping watch over the countryside.
Owner of North Hill Park Nigel Clark says:
When you first see it and you look at it in the air, you think to yourself, you would have no idea actually what's inside.
Glamping is going to be a little bit different, he says.

13th January 1842: The sole survivor of 4,500 British soldiers arrives at Jalalabad in Afghanistan
Although it later emerged that a further 115 British officers and soldiers, along with their wives and children, had survived as hostages Brydon was the only Briton to have escaped from Kabul without being captured.
Part of the First Anglo-Afghan War, British troops had maintained a garrison in Kabul since 1839 following the restoration of the British-supported Shuja Shah. On 2 November 1841 a group of locals, under the leadership of Akbar Khan, launched an uprising against the occupying forces. The British commander General William Elphinstone, who had been called “the most incompetent soldier who ever became general” by his contemporary General William Nott, did little to re-establish control and instead agreed to the British withdrawal to the garrison at Jalalabad.
Having handed over gunpowder, new muskets and canon to Akbar Khan in return for safe passage approximately 16,000 British soldiers and civilians left Kabul on 6 January 1842. They were soon set upon by Afghan tribes, and within three days 3,000 people had died while the column had only moved 25 miles. Freezing conditions and desertions further increased the losses so that by 11 January the army had been reduced to just 200 men. A final standoff at the Gandamak pass finished off much of the rest of the British army leaving only Brydon, who had earlier become separated from the remnants of the army, to make it to Jalalabad alone despite his own life-threatening injuries. On being asked what had happened to the rest of the army Brydon is said to have responded, “I am the army”.
Take a peek at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's new home Frogmore Cottage as security tightens
New year, new house! Prince Harry and Meghan are preparing to move to the country, after the Queen gifted them Frogmore Cottage. And ahead of their relocation, security is being tightened around the Windsor property. New photos show high-tech cameras have been installed by the entrance to their house on the Long Walk. There are also visible signs that warn passers-by: This is a protected site under Section 128 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. Trespass on this site is a criminal offence..Last month, Kensington Palace announced that Harry and Meghan will relocate to Windsor, rather than stay in London as predicted. The statement read: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will move to Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Estate early next year as they prepare for the arrival of their first child. The couple have lived at Nottingham Cottage since their engagement last year. Windsor is a very special place for Their Royal Highnesses and they are grateful that their official residence will be on the estate. The Duke and Duchess’s official office will continue to be based at Kensington Palace. .Harry and Meghan's new home is a special place for the couple, as it faces the stunning grounds of their wedding reception venue, Frogmore House, within Windsor's private Home Park. They have also submitted plans to renovate the cottage and turn it into a five-bedroom family home. HELLO! recently spoke to royal chef Darren McGrady, who lived next door in the Stables from 1985 to 1993. Darren revealed: When I was there, Frogmore Cottage was split into five different homes. Staff accommodation was run by the Crown properties so it was paid for by the government and they never really overspend. It was a fantastic location – you're in the Queen's back garden – but a little bit run-down. If something wanted repairing it would just be repaired, it would never be replaced. The staff quarters were never the most luxurious so I can imagine there's a lot of work to be done to turn them into royal accommodation. .He added: I'm sure it'll be put back together and brought back to its glory for Harry and Meghan. They would need to make a lot of changes though, absolutely! They could easily do 10, 12 bedrooms there and then add in all the extras – the drawing rooms, the sitting rooms, the gym. .

South London capital of African immigrants and the flight of white residents
The 2011 UK Census recorded 1,904,684 residents who identified as Black/African/Caribbean/Black British, accounting for 3 per cent of the total UK population. This was the first UK census where the number of self-reported Black African residents exceeded that of Black Caribbeans.
Within England and Wales, 989,628 individuals specified their ethnicity as Black African, 594,825 as Black Caribbean, and 280,437 as Other Black. In Northern Ireland, 2,345 individuals self-reported as Black African, 372 as Black Caribbean, and 899 as Other Black, totaling 3,616 Black residents. In Scotland, 29,638 persons identified themselves as African, choosing either the African, African Scottish or African British tick box or the Other African tick box and write-in area. 6,540 individuals also self-reported as Caribbean or Black, selecting either the Caribbean, Caribbean Scottish or Caribbean British tick box, the Black, Black Scottish or Black British tick box, or the Other Caribbean or Black tick box and write-in area.In order to compare UK-wide results, the Office for National Statistics combined the African and Caribbean or Black entries at the top-level,and reported a total of 36,178 Black residents in Scotland.According to the ONS, individuals in Scotland with Other African, White and Asian ethnicities as well as Black identities could thus all potentially be captured within this combined output. The General Register Office for Scotland, which devised the categories and administers the Scotland census, does not combine the African and Caribbean or Black entries, maintaining them as separate for individuals
In the 2001 Census, 565,876 people in the United Kingdom had reported their ethnicity as Black Caribbean, 485,277 as Black African, and 97,585 as Black Other, making a total of 1,148,738 Black or Black British residents.
Most Black Britons can be found in the large cities and metropolitan areas of the country. The 2011 census found that 1.85 million of a total Black population of 1.9 million lived in England, with 1.09 million of those in London, where they made up 13.3 per cent of the population, compared to 3.5 per cent of England's population and 3 per cent of the UK's population. The ten local authorities with the highest proportion of their populations describing themselves as Black in the census were all in London: Lewisham (27.2 per cent), Southwark (26.9 per cent), Lambeth (25.9 per cent), Hackney (23.1 per cent), Croydon (20.2 per cent), Barking and Dagenham (20.0 per cent), Newham (19.6 per cent), Greenwich (19.1 per cent), Haringey (18.8 per cent) and Brent (18.8 per cent).
Outside of London, the next largest populations are in Birmingham (96,360, 9%) / Wolverhampton(17,309, 6.9%), Manchester (43,484, 8.6%), Bristol (25,734, 6%), Nottingham (22,185, 7.3%), Leicester (20,585, 6.2%) and Luton (19,909,)..

This beautiful evocation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Match Girl' echoes the simple poignancy of its source material. Early British film pioneer James Williamson's camera remains static throughout; the film's technical innovation lies in its deft use of superimposed images to create visual depth. Beyond a veil of drifting snow, the tearful and barefoot girl retreats into an imaginary world of warmth and light, and while the policeman's torch finds her too late, the film comforts us with its interpretation of an otherworldly rescue from the hardships and indifference of Edwardian life. (Simon McCallum)
