THE MIDTOWN MEN - NEW ORLEANS, LA - MAHALIA JACKSON THEATRE
MARCH 27, 2015 - 7:00PM
Green New Deal Town Hall Meeting - Congo Square / Mahalia Jackson Theatre
On Tuesday, May 7, hundreds gathered at Congo Square and marched to Mahalia Jackson Theater as part of the national Green New Deal tour.
The Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy and more than forty other local organizations sponsored the event, in conjunction with the Sunrise Movement, a group of youth advocates dedicated to advancing climate change legislation.
Indigenous and Black community leaders anchored the proceedings, with speakers highlighting the disproportionate impact environmental degradation and climate change have on communities of color, as well as insisting that future solutions to climate change honor Black and Indigenous communities.

Hundreds of advocates gathered in New Orleans Tuesday evening to show support for a set of environmental goals aimed at addressing climate change and inequality known as the Green New Deal.
Tuesday’s event was less about specific policy details, and more about prioritizing black and indigenous voices as those policies start to take shape.
Hundreds of people showed up for the event in support of the Green New Deal.

It started with a drum circle and tribute to the Louisiana’s United Houma Nation at Congo Square in Louis Armstrong Park. From there, people marched into nearby Mahalia Jackson Theater. Inside, leaders from local and national advocacy groups talked about climate change and environmental justice. Colette Pichon Battle, director of the Gulf Coast Center for Law and Policy, spoke about how the Gulf South has a lot of experience with disaster recovery.
“Even in our successes,” she said, “We’ve learned what to do and what not to do. We should be a leader on rebuilding this country’s infrastructure and creating millions of jobs to do it.”
The event also marked the launch of a new environmental initiative called Gulf South for a Green New Deal.
Specific legislation for the Green New Deal has not been proposed yet. So, over the next few years, Gulf South for a Green New Deal will be talking to residents across the region about the specific policies they want to see included in any future legislation.
New Orleans, Louisiana - Louis Armstrong Park (2020)
Louis Armstrong Park is a 32-acre (130,000 m2) park located in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, just across Rampart Street from the French Quarter.
In the 1960s a controversial urban renewal project leveled a substantial portion of the Tremé neighborhood adjacent to Congo Square. After a decade of debate, the City created the present-day park from that land. This park was designed by New Orleans architect Robin Riley and was named after New Orleans-born Jazz legend Louis Armstrong.
The footprint of the present-day park contains the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium, the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts and several buildings owned by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. The portion of the park immediately in front of the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium is the site of Congo Square, formerly known as Beauregard Square, famous for its role in the history of African American music and spiritual practice.
Some elements of the park's design have been subject to critique throughout the years. Residents of the adjacent Tremé and French Quarter neighborhoods have called for the removal of the large fence that separates the park from surrounding areas and for incorporating the large concrete parking lots in the rear of the park into the park's greenspace. The presence of these parking lots are often attributed to high rates of subsidence and flooding along N. Villere Street.
Louis Armstrong Park was home to the first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in 1970. While that festival has moved to the larger space of New Orleans Fairgrounds, Armstrong Park has more recently been the home of many other events, including the Jazz in the Park free concert series, the Treme Creole Gumbo Fest, and the Louisiana Cajun & Zydeco Festival.
Monuments include a 12-foot statue of Louis Armstrong. by Elizabeth Catlett, a bust of Sidney Bechet, and a depiction of Buddy Bolden.
The French Quarter, also known as the Vieux Carré, is the oldest neighborhood in the city of New Orleans. After New Orleans (La Nouvelle-Orléans in French) was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, the city developed around the Vieux Carré (Old Square in English), a central square. The district is more commonly called the French Quarter today, or simply The Quarter, related to changes in the city with American immigration after the Louisiana Purchase. Most of the extant historic buildings were constructed either in the late 18th century, during the city's period of Spanish rule, or were built during the first half of the 19th century, after U.S. annexation and statehood.
The district as a whole has been designated as a National Historic Landmark, with numerous contributing buildings that are separately deemed significant. It is a prime tourist destination in the city, as well as attracting local residents. Because of its distance from areas where the levee was breached during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as well as the strength and height of the nearest Mississippi River Levees in contrast to other levees along the canals and lakefront, it suffered relatively light damage from floodwater as compared to other areas of the city and the greater region.
New Orleans is a consolidated city-parish located along the Mississippi River in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Louisiana. With an estimated population of 391,006 in 2018, it is the most populous city in Louisiana. Serving as a major port, New Orleans is considered an economic and commercial hub for the broader Gulf Coast region of the United States.
New Orleans is world-renowned for its distinct music, Creole cuisine, unique dialect, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture and vibrant nightlife along Bourbon Street. The city has been described as the most unique in the United States, owing in large part to its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. Founded in 1718 by French colonists, New Orleans was once the territorial capital of French Louisiana before being traded to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. New Orleans in 1840 was the third-most populous city in the United States, and it was the largest city in the American South from the Antebellum era until after World War II. The city's location and flat elevation have historically made it very vulnerable to flooding. State and federal authorities have installed a complex system of levees and drainage pumps in an effort to protect the city.
The Historic Carver Theater Returns to its Roots
By Barbara Corbellini Duarte - The Historic Carver Theater, once a state of the art movie theater for blacks in the 1950s, reopens as a performance venue in the Tremé neighborhood in New Orleans, hoping to bring jobs, music, culture and jobs to the region.

I Found The Answer-Della Reese And Brilliance
Gospel classics are songs that are special, they've been around for a long time. We all know them word for word; love them, they have a special meaning in our lives, and they will never be forgotten.
The song-I Found The Answer, was written by Johnny Lange (1905 - 2006) was a songwriter, author and publisher. His daughter is actress Hope Lange. He wrote special special material for night club singers, and the Ice Capades of 1950. He also wrote Mule Train which was a big hit for Frankie Laine in 1949, and others. Besides writing I Found The Answer Lange also wrote Somebody Bigger Than You or I, I Asked the Lord, and He's Only a Prayer Away. This song was released by Malhalia in 1959, and through the wonder of computer digitalization it was re-released in 1994 with Tramaine Hawkins joining Malhalia for duet version.
The group-Brilliance: Merry Clayton born in New Orleans, began her singing career in church. She toured with Bobby Darin at age fourteen, was a part of the Raylettes for five years. She has also performed with other superstars of popular music who wanted her soulful, gospel-bred voice to sing with them. The caliber of soul found in Merry's voice was rooted in gospel music, and will always be in gospel music.
Vermyetta Royster started her singing in the glee club at her high school. At the age of seventeen she joined the famous Clara Ward Singers. With the Ward Singers she toured Europe, and the United States. She was a part of the Ward Singers for thirteen years.
O.C. Smith (1932 -- 2001) was was born in Louisiana. Smith gained his first break as a singer with Sy Oliver and made an appearance on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. His success on that show led to a recording contract with Cadence Records. Smith's debut release was a cover of the Little Richard hit Tutti Frutti. In 1968, he entered the charts for the first time with Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp, which reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart and also broke the Top 40 in the United States. In December 1968 his recording of Little Green Apples, went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and sold over one million records. In 1985 Smith completed his religious studies and became the Reverend O.C. Smith. He became pastor and founder of The City Of Angels Church in Los Angeles, California where he practiced for 16 years.
Eric Strom started singing at the early age of five. Like most it started with him singing in his church. He has sung in over thirty musicals in his life time, but each sunday he came be found in his church were he is the musical director.
Della Reese a living legend. She has been singing gospel since her teenage years. She sang with and traveled with Mahalia, was part of the Mediation Singers, and released several solo gospel albums. She moved into the secular side with big splash, concurred it, won Grammys. The next chapter volted her into television and movies. Through it all Della never lost her faith, and in 2010 she was ordained a minister. She is the founder of the Understanding Principles for Better Living Church, an independent Christian New Thought congregation, Inglewood, California. In her ministerial work, she is known as the Rev. Dr. Della Reese Lett.
This rendering is by Della Reese and Brilliance from a 1986 album recorded live at the Long Beach Center Theater in California.

Throughout this jaunt, the band will be bringing their fervent live show to familiar cities as well as municipalities that have yet to be graced (or confronted) with a Bad Seeds live experience.
Mahalia Jackson
Mahalia Jackson (/məˈheɪljə/ mə-HAYL-yə; October 26, 1911 – January 27, 1972) was an American gospel singer. Possessing a powerful contralto voice, she was referred to as The Queen of Gospel. Jackson became one of the most influential gospel singers in the world and was heralded internationally as a singer and civil rights activist. She was described by entertainer Harry Belafonte as the single most powerful black woman in the United States. She recorded about 30 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen golds—million-sellers.
I sing God's music because it makes me feel free, Jackson once said about her choice of gospel, adding, It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues.

LYRICS:
I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Refrain:
Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.
When my feeble life is o’er,
Time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

You're a Rational Male, therefore, you are Satan, not Santa. ... THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS YOUR NONSENSE. 1. He´s got the whole world in His hands, |: He´s got the whole world in His hands, :| He´s got the whole world in His hands. 2. He´s got the wind and the rain in His hands, |: He´s got the wind and the rain in His hands, :| He´s got the whole world in His hands. 3. He's got the earth and sky in his hands; He's got the night and day in his hands; He's got the sun and moon in his hands; He´s got the whole world in His hands. 2. He´s got the whole world in His hands, |: He´s got the whole world in His hands, :| He´s got the whole world in His hands. He's got the land and sea in his hands; He's got the wind and rain in his hands; He's got the spring and fall in his hands; He´s got the whole world in His hands. 3. He´s got the whole world in His hands, |: He´s got the whole world in His hands, :| He´s got the whole world in His hands.
