[Wikipedia] Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival
Berwick-upon-Tweed Film and Media Arts Festival is an annual film festival described as a celebration of the art of film, running for five days each September, the festival is set in the historic border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The festival was established in 2005 by current Chairman Professor Huw Davies and artist Marcus Coates, with the vision to introduce audiences to new work and cross borders between independent cinema and artists' film and video.
It is a 'promenade' event using the fabric of the town as its screen, under an overarching theme. Outside projections and screenings make use of the historic town walls, bridges and courtyards. Film screenings use museums, galleries, churches and the local arts centre The Maltings Theatre and Cinema.
Each year the festival commissions a range of work that may then go on to appear in other international festivals and venues. A range of projects, workshops and education work is carried out with communities in the town and further afield, into North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. The current team includes a board chaired by Huw Davies (co-founder), supported by a number of board members including Samm Haillay (filmmaker and producer). The festival is directed and curated by Peter Taylor (Festival Director, January 2015 – present).
Notably, each year the festival hosts a Young Filmmakers Showcase, exhibiting short films from young filmmakers under 19 years of age in the Scottish Borders and North East of England with two cash prizes for the best film in an Under 14s category and a 15–19 years category. The 15–19 years category is supported by director Paul W.S. Anderson which serves as a legacy to his late father, Chris Anderson.
Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival receives regular funding from Arts Council England and the British Film Institute, this is supplemented through additional fundraising and corporate sponsorship.

Figures Half Unreal - immersive theatrical installation
'Figures Half Unreal' was a major site-specific immersive theatrical installation resulting from collaboration between The Maltings Theatre, Berwick-upon-Tweed & Brass Bastion Theatre Company. We took over a derelict georgian building in the ancient town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, renovated it, and created a mysterious and inspirational world, populated with a specially commissioned immersive theatrical piece celebrating the secret lives of painter L.S. Lowry - who frequently visited Berwick and painted the town itself.
The building itself, known as The Penny Lodging House, provided an extraordinary space for the event, which played to capacity audiences throughout its three evening run. Some members of the audience returned every night to see it again.
The production played on 5 - 7 August 2010 as part of The Great Berwick Sideshow Festival of immersive & site-specific performance.

To The Breakwater Light - Berwick-upon-Tweed - Silent Film
This silent film was re-edited down from the original short film The Gentlemen screened as part of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival 2007.
In 2010, a number of local bands and musicians from Berwick-upon-Tweed were invited to create new scores for the film, to be performed at The Maltings Theatre in Berwick on 24 September in the main house theatre. These new scores will in due course be posted as video responses to this video.
If you would like to create a new musical soundtrack for this film and re-post it as a video response, be our guests! We'll moderate the response and then link through to it from our website. All entries welcome, there are no rules but spoken language - and offensive content - is not permitted. Songs, on the other hand, are fine. The music can be from any genre - the only proviso is that it should respond to the action of the film in some way.
To The Breakwater Light & The Gentlement were written & directed by Miles Gregory, 2006.
The Breakwater Light is the name of the famous lighthouse that stands at the end of Berwick pier and is featured in the film.
The Creeping Things – New Theme to Still at Large (Official Video)
Extended video of the 2018 single by The Creeping Things on Owd Scrat Records.
Buy here:
This track was conceived as an alternative, disruptive soundtrack to the now deleted YouTube video ‘Still at Large – Holy Island’, an essay film about Lindisfarne, UK, presented by architecture writer Nicholas Still. The Creeping Things (aka Lola de Witte-Still of Berwick-upon-Tweed and Berlin) made her own (unsolicited) version of the video, with her disturbing soundtrack imposed on top of it. When we came across this relentless and compelling piece of music and wordage we persuaded Lola to allow us to release it as The Creeping Things’ first UK single release. We are also chuffed to be exclusively hosting the new video on Owd Scrat Records’ Vimeo and YouTube channels.
The female monologue on the track (which de Witte-Still claims is not her own recording but was sent to her via an anonymous WeTransfer link in 2015) remorselessly intones about a male figure on the run from an unspoken crime. This figure is up to his neck in the sea, in the manner of St. Cuthbert, who liked inducing trances by the chill of the water. Over de Witte-Still’s relentless motorik beat and haunted analogue synths (not unlike Neu!-mode Stereolab backing a robotic David Tibet) the voice chants of the fugitive’s many ‘hyperthermal’ apocalyptic reveries, until the monologue seemingly drowns in its own twisted poetic vitriol. The voice, and the figure it describes, both seem to be hunting for something or someone. Are they aiming their threatening intent towards Still himself? Interestingly, Nicholas Still has not made any public appearances since the new version of his video was posted.
