Davenports Magic Museum - Antiques Road Trip - BBC - 2014
Here's an interesting article about Davenports Magic Museum - Antiques Road Trip - BBC - 2014
The Davenports Magic Museum has Hundreds of artefacts on display, from a first edition of Discoverie of Witchcraft, written in 1584 and now recognized as the first published material on conjuring, to the full size reproduction of Harry Houdini's Chinese Water Torture Tank (built for the film Death Defying Acts starring Catherine Zeta Jones). There is even an opportunity to be 'levitated by Paul Daniels'.
Explore the story of the Davenport family, starting with Lewis, who performed many times at the Maskelyne's Home of Mystery, St. George's Hall, and founded Davenport's Magic 115 years ago.
Find Lewis Davenport's 1928 Rolls Royce Limousine parked outside the recreation of 15 New Oxford Street, Britain's most successful magic shop in the 1920s and 1930s. Meet our very own magician demonstrating magic tricks from the period behind the counter. The family still own a magic shop in London's West End.
The Davenport collections include ventriloquists' dolls, boxes of magic and tricks from the last 300 years, over 100 magic posters and prints, costumes and stage sets that belonged to the greatest magicians in the history of magic and much more.
Lewis Davenport (1881-1961) was a British performer and inventor.
He established Davenports & Co. in 1898, now one of the oldest family run magic business in the world. As a performer his specialty was the lightning-fast manipulation of solid billiard balls and quick changes. He made the decision to change his name to his 'nom de theatre' as LEWIS from the name of the town Lewisham and DAVENPORT because it was in Davenport Road”.[1][2]
Davenport was a natural entrepreneur who started the company as a mail-order operation, writing out instructions by hand. He got a printing press around 1905 by putting an ad in the paper saying he was willing to swap a printing press for magic tricks.
He also created a very popular version of the Mutilated Parasol.
