Garden of Unearthly Delights - Manabu Ikeda
Garden of Unearthly Delights: Works by Ikeda, Tenmyouya & teamLab
Friday, October 10 — Sunday, January 11
Using fine point pens, inks, and acrylic pigments, the painter Manabu Ikeda creates detailed compositions comprised of imaginary worlds that are born from his own experiences and contemporary events.
Born in Saga Prefecture in 1973, Ikeda earned his B.A. in design in 1998 and M.A. in 2000, both from Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2011 he stayed in Vancouver, Canada, with a grant from the Agency of Cultural Affairs, Japan. Since June 2013 Ikeda has been working on a large-scale painting at a residency of Chazen Museum of Art in Madison, Wisconsin. This work is expected to be completed in three years.
His recent solo exhibitions include: Manabu Ikeda, The Obuse Museum & The Nakajima Chinami Gallery, Nagano Prefecture, Japan (2009); Meltdown, West Vancouver Museum, Vancouver, Canada (2013), among others. Ikeda has participated in numerous group exhibitions including: Bye Bye Kitty!!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art, Japan Society Gallery, New York, US (2011); Zipangu—The Surge of Japanese Contemporary Art, The Niigata Bandaijima Art Museum, Niigata Prefecture (toured in 2012–13 to Hachinohe, Akita Prefecture, and Takasaki Museum of Art, Gunma Prefecture), Japan; Domani: The Art of Tomorrow 2013, The National Art Center, Tokyo, Japan (2013). His works are in the public collections of Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Wisconsin, US; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; and The Obuse Museum, Nagano Prefecture, Japan.

Art in the Ordinary Yamada Denki Takasaki, Japan
This is my second Art in the Ordinary exhibition. It was held from the 3th to the 15th of March 2015 at Yamada Denki Electronics Store headquarters in Takasaki, Japan. There were 57 photographs all taken in the city of Takasaki. The exhibition was unique in that it was interactive; by that, I mean that the viewers could view the art photo and then lift the title card and see the ordinary location where the photo was taken. This interaction seemed to be extremely enjoyable to all that came.

A Japanese Steam Train. Hot. Filthy. AWESOME!
Driving a steam train is filthy work. It's hot and stressful and it doesn't even pay that well. And totally worth it...
Once there were over 1000 steam trains in Japan. Today there are just eight left. They’re extremely difficult to operate. The steam train is a fickle beast. To get it going in the morning you have to start feeding it a diet of wood and water two hours before you actually want to leave.
Steam trains used to carry coal and other raw materials. Nowadays their cargo is mostly tourists, though I think they’re missing out on the best part – riding up front.
You have to prime the accelerator several minutes before you need the power. If you let it get too hot then you either have to dump your precious steam or risk blowing the boiler up. And - you have to know the track. What’s coming next. How steep it is, and how much coal you’ll need to get your cargo to the top. It’s an endless balancing act.
It’s filthy work. So why do they do it? Because every day, when other people go to work, they get to climb on board and watch the countryside roll by aboard the world’s best toy – their very own, full-sized steam train.

The gold lacquered pill box, Inrou (印籠), by Joka Yamada
More detail:
[Inrou is a traditional Japanese case for holding small objects.
Since the Azuchi-Momoyama period, this item became popular among Samurai.]
The gold lacquered pill box designed a man is washing a kettle under the moonlight, by Joka Yamada
Joka Yamada was a gold lacquer craftsman and became a purveyor to the Tokugawa family.
His works are collected in Tokyo National Museum and Osaka City Museum.
This is a gold lacquered pill box, Inrou (印籠). A man who is washing a kettle on a boat under the moonlight has depicted with the raised lacquer work.
Joka designed a man's finger and facial expression, waves on the river surface and swings and the bark of willow elaborately.
This is a beautifully- made article with a traditional atmosphere so that it seems like we can hear the sound of wind and water.

Hodota Hachimanzuka Kofun - 保渡田八幡塚古墳 - Japanese Ancient Tomb
If you only ever sit through one of my videos, this is the one I recommend you do so. Of the numerous kofun I've seen this one is my favourite. The restoration work is great, the inner chamber is open complete with sarcophagus (from the 6 min mark onwards) and the variety of haniwa (terracotta statues) is fantastic. I've visited here 3 times and will go again.
In Takasaki City, Gunma (群馬県高崎市). It's in a park with other kofun and a museum, known as Kamitsukeno Haniwa-no-Sato Kōen (上毛野はにわの里公園) .
Info (English) :
Japanese :
*********************************************
Q: What am I watching here ?
A: You are watching footage of a kofun/古墳 - kofun are tombs in Japan that were created during the Kofun Period (roughly between the 3rd and 7th Century AD) - this era was preceded by the Jomon and Yayoi periods, and followed by Asuka, Nara and so on. These tombs were built as burial chambers for people from Japanese imperial families and other people of higher status in society during those days. The most well-known and generally largest tombs are found around Kyoto and Osaka, but they are found all over Kansai, Kanto, Tohoku etc., and even in other parts of Japan such as Shikoku and Kyushu. Figures vary greatly, but some sources state there are over 160000 thousand of these kofun in Japan. At times you will see haniwa on and around kofun - haniwa are terracotta figures which were made in various shapes, including being formed as people and animals.
Have a read of the the Wikipedia article for more information :
I also have a Facebook page where I post these videos. Feel free to contact me via that page if you want to connect regarding anything about kofun, particularly their promotion to tourists to Japan. Ideally I'd like to build a kofun appreciation community of sorts, but that is just a dream right now -
