Under-threat Brighton gallery in £15,000 Kickstarter appeal
A gallery promoting conservation issues is under threat - with founders looking for £15,000 in online donations to keep open.
ONCA opened in Brighton in November 2012 as part of the city's London Road regeneration scheme.
The premises, which is the only inner city gallery promoting both art and ecology, presents contemporary exhibitions alongside performance and education.
But, despite raising awareness of a range of vital issues such as marine life and the trees, the gallery is facing a funding crisis.
It's founders have now launched a campaign on Kickstarter to raise enough money to keep it open for at least the next six months.
Laura Coleman, who founded ONCA after working for three years with animals rescued from illegal trade in Bolivia said: I see the gallery quickly becoming a hub for key conversations about environmental change, as art plays a powerful role in the engagement and education of younger generations.
ONCA offers a space where creativity has the potential to inspire belief in positive action, and ultimately help to forge an environmentally aware, integrated and active society.
Organisations they have supported the gallery include Birdlife International, Cape Farewell, the Sussex Wildlife Trust, Arts Council England and the Marine Conservation Society.
Patrons include Brighton Pavilion MP Caroline Lucas and writer Robert Macfarlane.
Dr Lucas said: I'm very proud that Brighton is home to ONCA. The arts have a vital role to play in encouraging more people to care for our environment, and to take action to defend it.
At a time of increasing environmental destruction, we need to reach the hearts and minds of as many people as we can with a positive message that urgent change is possible and desirable. ONCA shows how that can be done.
The deadline for the campaign is April 27 at 1pm.

The Saga of the European King Live 2017 ACT I
The Saga of the European King is a British audio drama about an excitable medieval king and his greatest, final adventure - to kill Winter. We release an episode every month on iTunes, Soundcloud, Libsyn and Bandcamp.
On the 6th of October 2017 we performed the very first live episode of The Saga of the European King to an audience at O N C A gallery in Brighton. It was part of the Brighton Digital Festival and funded by Arts Council England.
The episode we put on was the finale of Book 2 which ties up most of the plotlines of the last year. The Adventure Team is reunited on the lawn of the White Roost and the King's plan to conquer the United States of America comes to a head.
Music by Nicolai Roos, John Bartmann and Mano Camatsos.
A huge thank you to everyone who came, Josh and Amy as ever, Claudia Treacher who was drafted in as technician at the last minute, Lydia Heath of O N C A, Laurence Hill and Melissa Ray of the Brighton Digital Festival, Ed Babb for filming and Patricia Finnegan for all the love and support.

Deadly legacy: East Kalimantan's abandoned mines
This interview with Sarah Agustio from JATAM, Indonesia - a mining advocacy network - was filmed during 'Extracting Us', a photography exhibition held in ONCA gallery, Brighton, UK, from 11-21 July 2019. (
Sarah explains what life has been like for her family and community, growing up in the shadow of East Kalimantan's many coal mines, and what happens when mining companies leave.
Since 2011, 35 children have died in abandoned mining pits in East Kalimantan, Borneo. Ten-year-old Ahmad Setiawan died most recently, on 22 June, after drowning in a disused water-filled coal pit near Samarinda, East Kalimantan’s capital. His death was the third of its kind in 2019. Children and young people fall into these former mines while playing near them or have drowned while swimming in them.

'Extracting coal is extracting life'
‘Extracting coal is extracting life’
This interview with Siti Maimanah, a PhD student from Indonesia, was filmed during 'Extracting Us', a photography exhibition held in ONCA gallery, Brighton, UK, from 11-21 July 2019. (
Indonesia exports 80 percent of its coal, yet pays a heavy price from its production and the mine waste left behind. The mining legacy of mining companies, including London-listed Rio Tinto, have left tonnes of tailings (mining sludge) in their wake and since 2011, 35 children have died by falling into or drowning in abandoned coal pits in East Kalimantan, Borneo.
Despite the UK government's recent 'climate emergency' announcement, British investors at Indonesia’s Infrastructure Investment Forum in London on 2 July sought out investment opportunities, including fossil fuel projects such as the Central Java Coal Power plant and the development of four airports. (
The Indonesian president has since spoken of his intention to reduce the country's use of coal, running counter to his government's long-term plans of meeting growing domestic energy demands with it. Some 39 coal-fired plants are currently under construction, and a further 68 are planned. (

// ABOUT CONSTRUCTED GEOGRAPHIES //
Constructed Geographies is a new visual arts exhibition featuring new art work created in response to Sussex’s diverse heritage and population.
The artists are: Maria Amidu, Akila Richards, Amanda Jobson, Rikki Tarascas, Judith Ricketts, Josef Cabey and Amy Zamarripa Solis. The artists work across a variety of mediums including painting, photography, mixed media collage, glasswork, textiles, video and installation.
The broad theme of the exhibition allowed each artist to approach it differently, working to explore the rich cultural heritage of the area and draw out stories from a range of communities.
The exhibition seeks to claim a space for all in Sussex. From the remains of an ancient African women found on Beachy Head to local histories in the African hairdresser in Eastbourne, the exhibition works to dispel the misconception that there is a lack of diversity in the region. You just need to know where to look.

In the Ring with TyskySour: Green New Deal
Parliament has finally declared climate change a national emergency. However, whilst most of the Corbyn movement is on board with the idea of a Green New Deal, there are many different visions over what a truly transformative Green New Deal can look like. This live episode of #TyskySour will delve into these tensions, debating the question: how can Labour's climate policy meet the scale of the challenge we face, while prioritising justice for workers and marginalised communities?

Lyrics:
I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sit quietly
Agree politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing
So I fell for everything
(Pre-Chorus)
You held me down but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down but I got up
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now
(Chorus)
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion
And you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion
And you’re gonna hear me roar
You’re gonna hear me roar
Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee, I earned my stripes
I went from zero
To my own hero
(Pre-Chorus)
You held me down but I got up
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder, gonna shake the ground
You held me down but I got up
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now
(Chorus)
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion
And you’re gonna hear me roar

A Thing Heard: Four Ways of Listening - Sonic Arts
A Thing Heard: Four Ways of Listening is a collaborative tour showcasing the work of four contemporary British artists working in the field of sound art. The artists have curated a collection of sculptural artworks that use sound as the primary medium, exploring the inherent materiality and physicality of sound through a range of media, working methods, and outcomes.
The works utilise both conventional and unconventional methods of sound production; combining high-tech electronics (loudspeakers, computers, sensors, surface transducers) and customised sculptural elements (wood, rope, sheet metal, bioplastics, carbonated liquids, pyrotechnics) to demonstrate four distinct ways of working with sound in an artistic discipline.
Jordan Edge’s Acclimate is a temperature-reactive sound installation that uses industrial fans and loudspeakers to explore the physical and psychological effects of noise on the human body. Joseph Higgins’ Many Gods, Many Voices is an electro-acoustic composition and sound installation, using a bespoke sonic table to embody the ‘otherness’ of the human voice. Joshua Legallienne’s Action Without Action is a series of kinetic sculptures that produce acoustic sound without the use of loudspeakers, electronics, or conventional sources of energy. Charles Pender’s Maelström is an immersive multi-channel installation using surface transducers to propagate sound into suspended sheets of metal.
All four artists currently live and work in Brighton, UK.
