Abandoned Cheltenham to Honeybourne Railway Pt 2 of 2
In the second part of this Abandoned Cheltenham to Honeybourne project, we concentrate on the section from Broadway in the Cotswolds to Honeybourne. The film goes some way to explaining why the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Heritage Railway goes no further at present. Whilst the track bed offers little in the way of restoration challenges, the bridges, 7 in total, require a lot of work and finance to keep them safe and useable. whether we shall ever see steam trains travel this route in the future remains a cause for speculation. This line that started in Cheltenham actually carried on to Stratford on Avon, the council there have suggested some help in restoring the line as a joint venture in the future, and provides probably the only hope of access to sufficient capital to make it possible. Meanwhile Honeybourne would be useful as a link to a mainline but would still need a vast amount spent. Even as just a cycle path the bridges would still need a lot of work as you can see.

Visiting Gloucestershire England
Visiting Gloucestershire in England can be a surprisingly fun thing to do. Gloucestershire is a historic county mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in the 10th century, though the areas of Winchcombe and the Forest of Dean were not added until the late 11th century. Gloucestershire originally included the small town of Bristol. The local rural community moved to the port city, (as Bristol was to become) and Bristols population growth accelerated during the industrial revolution. Here are some things to do and see while visiting Gloucestershire, England:
Cheese Rolling: Britain is a treasure chest of old customs and Gloucester is no exception. Where else can you see people throwing themselves down a near vertical hill to catch a large Double Gloucester Cheese. Situated on Coopers Hill, a few miles from central Gloucester, the Cheese Roll takes place every May Bank Holiday. It is a very dangerous pastime and very dangerous = great fun!. This is the original extreme sport and it attracts TV crews from all over the world!
Prinknash Abbey: Situated in near the village of Cranham, (very close to the foot of the Cheese Roll!), is the beautiful Prinknash Abbey. Still inhabited by monks and with a working pottery it attracts many visitors from the UK and abroad. It also has a bird park and picnic area as well as a fabulous gift shop. Very tranquil and very interesting.
Gloucester Historic Docks: Right in the centre of the city is the fabulous Victorian docks. Now it is home to many businesses including retail outlets, bars and museums. Gloucester Waterways Museum details life on the waterways with photos and artefacts and interactive computer features. Outside there are a steam dredger, a barge a tugboat and several narrow boats all helping paint the picture. You can also take river cruises from the museum.
The Docks are also home to the Soldiers of Gloucester Museum telling the story of both the Gloucester Regiment and the Hussars.
Gloucester Antique Centre is also situated here. A Fascinating place where you can browse or haggle on all things old from ceramics, clocks and watches, jewellery, glassware furniture, books etc etc. The list is endless.
Gloucester Quays is a discount designer outlet centre with many bargains to be had!
If you are visiting on a Saturday look out for the model boat club sailing every sort of vessel including Warships, paddle boats and Submarines.
Sudely Castle: Home to the families of Lord and Lady Ashcombe and Henry and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst, Sudely Castle is a fantastic day out.
Learn the history of this wonderful medieval site and explore the award winning gardens. There is also an adventure park for the more energetic visitor and a Pheasantry. Visit St Marys church where Katherine Parr lies buried and if you are getting married you may want to consider Sudely as the venue for your big day.
With numerous exhibitions and acres of grounds Sudely Castle is a great day out.

#24 - UK House & Gardens - Charles Wade's Snowshill Manor
Sometimes there are places that are a bit different and Snowshill Manor House is one of these.
Unlike any other we visited 'Snowshill' is neither a museum nor a home, but one large treasure trove of delights according to the National Trust. Well often there is always another opinion - In this case this house is just full of stuff.
The near ruined Tudor Manor was purchased by the rather eccentric Charles Wade (1883-1956) in 1919 following his return from WW1 and, with inherited wealth from his father, chose to renovate the house over the following 3 years for the sole purpose of housing his 'treasures'. Being an architect, and an artist and a poet and a collector, he retained the integrity of the property and gave each room a theme for the treasures he had collected over the years since he was 7 years old. Escaping the realities of war he very much became a recluse and, although the home was his to 'enjoy', resided in the small, old bakehouse building, known as the Priest’s House in the garden that was also created and developed at this time.
He married in 1946 and, after spending time at the family's Sugar Estates in St Kitts they moved there in the early 1950's. During a return visit to England he died in 1956, however prior to his death he approached the National Trust in 1938 asking them to accept the Manor as a gift to safeguard the future of his collection. This was accepted in principle so Wade increased his treasures by gathering even more 'stuff' . Finally in 1951 the offer was accepted. During their stewardship the National Trust again renovated the Manor House in 2006 and had to completely remove all 22,000 'treasures', including over 2000 Costume Collection items ranging from corsets and doublets to shoes and hats, whilst work to stabilise the property took place, with each item then returned to their exact position in the Manor as Wade had originally placed them.
Although a significant proportion of his collection was exotic, most pieces were acquired in England, including seven suits of samurai armour from a tiny shop in Cheltenham. His coat of arms, of his own creation, had the motto 'Let nothing perish', and his collection of craftsmanship encompassed such diverse objects as spinning wheels, clocks, kitchen utensils, musical instruments, bicycles, samplers, model ships, masks, toys, pipes, mouse-traps, tapestries, manuscripts, locks and keys, rush lights, and reliquaries. The guiding principles that unified the collection were good design, colour, and workmanship—not rarity or value.
Described by Wade he says ‘I have not bought things because they were rare or valuable. My guiding essentials have been good design, colour and workmanship. What a joy these old things are to live with, each piece made by the hand of a craftsman, each has feeling that no machine could ever attain. Though each room of the house is filled with items of interest, each has a restful atmosphere. They are rooms to linger in – rooms one must return to – rooms where there is always something to discover – rooms which inspire a thousand fancies’.
Eccentric or extraordinary - you be the judge.
