Christmas Lights Walk Skinnergate Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland video of Winter walk below the Christmas Lights down the Skinnergate on ancestry visit to Perth, Perthshire. An ancient lane in the centre of Perth, Skinnergate represents a Mediaeval street which once connected Kirkgate and St. John's Kirk with the Red Brig Port, a gateway through the town wall. The name arises from the skinning and tanning of hides which took place here from the Middle Age until the close of the 18th century to supply the leather-working industry. The Glover Incorporation was one of the most powerful guilds of Perth, representing a membership responsible for curing thousands of skins and producing more than 30,000 pairs of gloves annually at the peak of the industry. Archaeological investigation has found the remains of tanner's pits just beyond the town wall, where space was available for the hides to be soaked for many months. The smell must have been overpowering. The finished gloves were sold from numerous shops on Skinnergate. Located on the east side of the Skinnergate is the Old Ship Inn which is Perth's oldest public house, dating back to 1665, although the building was reconstructed in 1935. Skinnergate House is a homeless shelter for men, which is operated by the Salvation Army. It was built in 1927 in the Neo-Georgian style for the Perth Model Lodging House Association, funded by whisky baron John Dewar, Lord Forteviot, born 1856, died 1929.

Greyfriars Burial Ground, Perth, Scotland.
In the south east quadrant of central Perth lies the Greyfriars Burial Ground. The Burial Ground was extended to the south to provide more space in 1795, and again in 1820. Paths were laid in what had until then been a fairly chaotic space in 1835, and decorative planting undertaken. Burials continued here until 1978, but Greyfriars was largely replaced when Westhil Cemetery was opended in1849. Between 1999 and 2001 Greyfriars was restored by Perth & Kinross Council.
The most striking of the monuments, is to be found against the east wall of Greyfriars. This is the monument erected by his congregation in memory of the Reverend Samuel George Kennedy, who died on 30th December 1835. The monument comprises a life size statue of a weeping lady in a gown leaning on a highly elaborate sarcophagus, which oddly, looks only large enough to accommodate a child. (This monument is seen in this video)

Walk The Battlements Of Huntingtower Castle Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland video of a walk along the battlements on ancestry visit to Huntingtower Castle, by Perth, Perthshire. This Scottish castle is said to be haunted by Lady Greensleeves, a young woman named Dorothea who was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Gowrie. The legend states that she was in love with a servant at the castle and that the two used to have clandestine meetings at night in the eastern tower, where the servants slept. One night the girl's mother, the Countess, is supposed to have discovered what was going on and made her way across the bridge from the family's quarters in the western tower to the eastern tower to catch the pair. Dorothea heard her mother's footsteps on the bridge and, unable to return to the other tower by that route, made her way to the roof. Here she made a leap from the tower to land safely on the battlements of the western tower and so return to bed where she was discovered by her mother. The following day the girl and her lover eloped and no records exist to tell us what happened to them.
