Prague Tourism Information
Prague (Praha in Czech) was the ancient capital of Charles IV's Bohemian Kingdom, and has played a pivotal role in the development of Central Europe since the Middle Ages.
Its epic history has produced a vibrant city of stunning buildings and lovely old squares, with the result that today, Prague is one of the world's most beautiful cities.
As visitors have increased to Prague, tourism has become of vital economic importance to the city.
The effects of tourism in Prague are mostly positive. Much of the post-communism reconstruction and regeneration of Prague has been driven by tourism, as ancient buildings have been transformed into fine restaurants and stylish hotels.
Key Prague Tourism Fact: In 1992 the historical centre of Prague, all 866 hectares, was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register.
Layout of Prague's City Centre - map of Prague
The historical centre of Prague is divided into five areas, spanning both banks of the Vltava River. Charles Bridge is the main pedestrian connection between the two.
On one side of the Vltava River is the Old Town (Stare Mesto), with the Old Town Square at its heart; the New Town (Nove Mesto), with Wenceslas Square at its heart; and the Jewish Quarter (Josefov).
On the other side of the river is the Lesser Town (Mala Strana), and the Castle District (Hradcany), with Prague Castle at its heart.
Charles Bridge and Prague Castle
The historical centre is denoted by the postal district Prague 1.
Key Prague Tourism Fact: Prague has a compact city centre. From Prague Castle on one side of the historical centre, to Wenceslas Square on the other (walking down through the Lesser Town, across Charles Bridge and through the Old Town), is just a 25 minute stroll. Stay in a hotel or apartment in Prague 1 (or close by in Prague 2), on either side of the river, and you can easily walk around the whole city and see all the sights and attractions.
Just outside the city centre lie other areas, which are accessible by tram and the metro: Vinohrady, Holesovice, Smichov, Karlin and Vysehrad.

Prague's Most Beautiful Views
Prague Castle is the most prominent Prague tourist attraction. Set on a hill, it affords visitors fine views over the whole city.
There are also excellent views to be had from these sights and attractions in Prague: Old Town Hall Tower, Old Town Bridge Tower, Lesser Town Bridge Tower, Klementinum, Jindrisska Tower, Petrin and Vysehrad.
And tourism in Prague has encouraged several top floor restaurants to open, offering diners stunning views over the city. Enjoy a spot of lunch in the sunshine, or watch the city light up at night: restaurants with city views.
Prague Sights & Attractions
Prague tourist guide books often use English names for famous sights. This can be confusing for visitors, as maps and street signs are nearly always in Czech.
The following Czech translations will be useful:
Prague = Praha
Old Town = Stare Mesto
Prague Castle = Prazsky Hrad
Charles Bridge = Karluv Most
National Theatre = Narodni Divadlo
Wenceslas Square = Vaclavske Namesti
Old Town Square = Staromestske Namesti

Prague (/ˈprɑːɡ/; Czech: Praha, [ˈpraɦa] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It is the 15th largest city in the European Union.[5] It is also the historical capital of Bohemia. Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava River, the city is home to about 1.24 million people, while its larger urban zone is estimated to have a population of nearly 2 million.[6] The city has a temperate climate, with warm summers and chilly winters. Prague has the lowest unemployment rate in the European Union.[7]
Prague has been a political, cultural, and economic centre of central Europe with waxing and waning fortunes during its 1,100-year existence. Founded during the Romanesque and flourishing by the Gothic and Renaissance eras, Prague was not only the capital of the Czech state, but also the seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.[8][9] It was an important city to the Habsburg Monarchy and its Austro-Hungarian Empire and after World War I became the capital of Czechoslovakia. The city played major roles in the Protestant Reformation, the Thirty Years' War, and in 20th-century history, during both World Wars and the post-war Communist era.[10]
Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th-century Europe. Main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square with the Prague astronomical clock, the Jewish Quarter, Petřín hill and Vyšehrad. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The city boasts more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits. An extensive modern public transportation system connects the city. Also, it is home to a wide range of public and private schools, including Charles University (Univerzita Karlova v Praze[11]). Prague is classified as an Alpha- global city according to GaWC studies, comparable to Vienna, Seoul and Washington, D.C. Its rich history makes it a popular tourist destination, and the city receives more than 4.4 million international visitors annually, as of 2011.[12] Prague ranked fifth in the Tripadvisor world list of best destinations in 2014.[13] Prague is the fifth most visited European city after London, Paris, Istanbul and Rome.[14]

Vienna (Listeni/viˈɛnə/;[5][6] German: Wien, pronounced [viːn] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city of Austria, and one of the nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 1.8 million[1] (2.6 million within the metropolitan area,[4] nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I the city had 2 million inhabitants.[7] Today it has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin.[8][9] Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.[10]
Apart from being regarded as the City of Music[11] because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be The City of Dreams because it was home to the world's first psycho-analyst – Sigmund Freud.[12] The city's roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, and then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstraße lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.[13]
Vienna is known for its quality of life. In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver, Canada and San Francisco, USA) for the world's most livable cities. Between 2011 and 2015, Vienna was ranked second, behind Melbourne, Australia.[14][15][16][17][18] For seven consecutive years (2009–2015), the human-resource-consulting firm Mercer ranked Vienna first in its annual Quality of Living survey of hundreds of cities around the world, a title the city still holds in 2015.[19][20][21][22][23][24] Monocle's 2015 Quality of Life Survey ranked Vienna second on a list of the top 25 cities in the world to make a base within.[25][26][27][28][29]
The UN-Habitat has classified Vienna as being the most prosperous city in the world in 2012/2013.[30] The city was ranked 1st globally for its culture of innovation in 2007 and 2008, and sixth globally (out of 256 cities) in the 2014 Innovation Cities Index, which analyzed 162 indicators in covering three areas: culture, infrastructure, and markets.[31][32][33] Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners.[34]]
