Salisbury Market - Charter Market - market square Salisbury Wiltshire
Salisbury Market Wiltshire
Salisbury holds a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays and has held markets regularly since 1227. In the 15th century the Market Place was dotted with stone crosses marking the centres for certain trades and goods. Today only the Poultry Cross remains, to which flying buttresses were added in 1852. The other crosses were the Livestock Cross, the Cheese & Milk Cross and the Wool & Yarn Cross.
In 1226, King Henry III granted the Bishop of Salisbury a charter to hold a fair lasting 8 days from the Feast of the Assumption of Mary (15 August).[12] Over the centuries the dates for the fair have moved around, but in its modern guise, a funfair is now held in the Market Place for three days from the third Monday in October. However, there is still an ancient law stating that the fair can be held in the Cathedral Close.
Even though Salisbury's famous Charter Market is held outdoors in all weathers throughout the year, it never fails to please the shopper and browser alike. Colourful, noisy, bustling, friendly and full of enticing aromas; from freshly ground coffee and fresh bread to hot doughnuts, hog roast and newly cut flowers. You can also discover a bit of Italy, selling the best ice cream, oils and olives in the South West. Also fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, cheeses, eggs, haberdashery, carpets, clothes, shoes, jewellery, kitchenware and wooden furniture, in fact the range of goods on offer is outstanding and all at exceptional prices.
The farmers' section within the market now runs every market day throughout the year and has proved to be an invaluable addition. It can be recognised by the line of green and yellow umbrellas located in the middle of the market. The produce sold is grown or produced by local farmers selling goods such as smoked trout and other fish, fresh bread, eggs, meats, sausages, bacon, cheeses and locally produced wines - something for all tastes. Around the top of the market you will find many cafés serving espresso and cappucino as well as beer, wine and food, with plenty of outside tables and chairs.
Other shopping centres in Salisbury include The Old George Mall, The Maltings, Winchester Street and the Crosskeys precinct.

Make my dissy into a video - Tom Woolman
A final year agriculture student at Harper Adams University College has been investigating the drinking motivation of adult broiler breeder birds.
Thomas Woolman, from Salisbury, researched the drinking habits at different times of the day -- feeding, afternoon and during the dark period, as part of his dissertation.
The 23-year-old, who is currently waiting for the results of his BEng (Hons) degree in Agriculture and Land and Farm Management, chose to research the subject following his placement year working with poultry at P D Hook Hatcheries Ltd.
He said: I had a very exciting placement year with lots of opportunities and moved around the country a lot working on different farms.
P D Hook then approached me and said that they would like me to look at drinking motivation for my dissertation as it is quite a controversial area of welfare research.
They wanted research that they could apply to their farms and to help inform decisions.
Although the results of Tom's research are so far inconclusive, they have been compared with those of another Harper Adams student doing a similar study.
Together they show that the broilers (hens raised for meat production), drink significantly less during the dark period.
Tom, who was also awarded a scholarship with PD Hook, added: The scholarship gave me huge financial support as well as experience and a career to take me forward.
I have since been offered a graduate job with the company and look to return to work on the breeder and rearing farms.
The research work that I've completed as part of my dissertation at Harper Adams will be very applicable to my future career.

Christmas Truce of 1914, World War I - For Sharing, For Peace
Peace at the war front on Christmas day during World War I. A century ago. A real story. An inspiration. Christmas is for sharing. By Sainsbury's.
Presenting the new Sainsbury’s Christmas advert. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion. Inspired by real events from 100 years ago.
This year’s Christmas ad from Sainsbury’s – Christmas is for sharing. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, sharing gifts – and even playing football together.
The chocolate bar featured in the ad is on sale now at Sainsbury’s. All profits will go to The Royal British Legion and will benefit the armed forces and their families, past and present.

Game of Truce commemorates WW1 football match
18 December 2014
On Wednesday night the spirit of the First World War Christmas truce lived on as the British and German armies played a 100th anniversary football match to mark the Christmas Truce of 1914. The match saw the British Army edging out their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, by a single goal. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Legion and the German Military's equivalent charity.
The match was jointly organised by the Football Association as part of its Football Remembers campaign, and Army HQ with sponsorship support from Team Army and Aldershot Town.
It honoured the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce using the international language of football as a fitting commemoration to the men on both sides who spent Christmas 1914 in the trenches but came together along the Western Front to joke, share whisky and schnapps and kick a ball about in no-man's land. It has come to represent a fleeting moment of humanity in a four-year conflict that killed more than 16 million troops and civilians.
Game of Truce teams
The game began with a rendition of 'Silent Night' as well as the national anthems of both countries and a minute's silence. Over 2,500 people turned out, including football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, FA Chairman Greg Dyke and Head of Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter.
Head of the Army General Sir Nick Carter was also at the game, where both sides were led out by flag bearers and mascots wearing military uniforms from 1914. I think it shows the enduring ability of sport, and soccer in particular, to bring together factions and tribes and different people who are competing against each other, in a way that has comradeship right at the heart of the game.
British Army Team Captain Keith Emmerson said: We are always proud to put on the Army shirt, no matter how many games you play, but especially tonight. We are all here for the rest of the Armed Forces, not just us as an army football team, but we're representing all of the Armed Forces.

The match wasn't about the final score but for the record, the British Army won 1-0.
The Legion is a firm supporter of sport within the military and is delighted to be a beneficiary charity from the Christmas Truce football match. The match is assisting the Legion to engage with a new generation of supporters and carry the Legion's message of comradeship to a broader community. Through commemorative events such as the Christmas Truce match, we are passing on the torch of Remembrance onto a younger generation ensuring there will always be a living legacy to those who sacrificed their today for our tomorrows.

Salisbury
Salisbury (/ˈsɔːlzbri/ SAWLZ-bree, /ˈsɒlzbri/ SOLZ-bree - a cognate of Salzburg, or locally /ˈsɔːzbri/) is a cathedral city in Wiltshire, England, and the only city within the county. It is the second largest settlement in the county by population, between Chippenham at 35,800 and Swindon at 209,156. It has also been called New Sarum /ˌnjuː ˈsɛərəm/ to distinguish it from the original site of settlement to the north of the city at Old Sarum, but this alternative name is not in common use.
