The Great Britain VII - April/May 2014
I have wanted to visit Scotland for years now to film steam in the Highlands, but every time the Great Britain railtour, promoted by Kings-Lynn based The Railway Touring Company, has run this 9 day mega-tour around England, Wales and Scotland, I have always been away or busy.
But seeing as this year I managed to get my holiday booked off of work early enough, I was able to chase all 9 days of the Great Britain VII. With 9 locomotives featuring on a wide variety of routes, this railtour had something for everyone.
The shots featured are as follows:
Day 1 (34046 London Victoria - Exeter St Davids, 47746 Exeter St Davids - Truro): Woking, Andover, Sherborne, approaching Axminster, Exeter St Davids
Day 2 (5029+34046 Falmouth - Bristol Temple Meads): Liskeard, departing Plymouth, Tiverton and Bristol Temple Meads
Day 3 (44932 Bristol Temple Meads - Grange-over-Sands): Abergavenny, Leominster, Warrington Bank Quay and Lancaster
Day 4 (46115 Grange-over-Sands - Edinburgh Waverley): Kents Bank, Carlisle, Lockerbie and Edinburgh Waverley
Day 5 (44871+45407 Edinburgh Waverley - Stranraer - Ayr): Haymarket and Armadale *First steam through Armadale since reopening in 2010*
Day 6 (60009 Edinburgh Waverley - Inverness, 62005 Edinburgh Waverley - Fort William): South Gyle and Inverness (60009), Edinburgh Waverley, Linlithgow and Falkirk High (62005)
Day 8 (60009 Inverness - Edinburgh Waverley, 62005 Fort William - Edinburgh Waverley): departing Forres, Union Terrace Gardens, Montrose and the Forth Bridge
Day 9 (60009 Edinburgh Waverley - York, 46233 York - London Kings Cross): Royal Border Bridge, Durham and Darlington (60009), Doncaster, Grantham and Stevenage (46233).
There will be another video going live at some point with footage of day 7, featuring 37516 on the Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh line. Originally booked to be hauled by one of Ian Riley's Black 5s, both of them became unavailable at very short notice following the derailment of 45407(?) at Cadder Yard the night before.

35018 'British India Line' on the Nigel Dobbing Memorial Special - 17/03/2019
After forming the Railway Touring Company which has run for 20+ years, running tours all over the UK and around Europe, Nigel Dobbing's passing was sad news for mainline steam enthusiasts. A fitting memorial was required and what a way to remember his legacy by running a private railtour from Kings Lynn (the Railway Touring Company's base location) to Melton Mowbray (Dobbing's childhood home) with BR(S) Merchant Navy 35018 'British India Line' - a locomotive Nigel had hoped to ride behind, but sadly never got the chance.
The Merchant Navy would run on it's own from Carnforth to King's Lynn with load 7 in tow (5 mk1 converted Pullmans), as other private charters had done in the past for Nigel Dobbing, on Saturday 16th March 2019, before working the charter via Ely, Peterborough, Grantham, Nottingham, Syston Jc, Melton Mowbray, Stamford, Peterborough and return. The set would return north on the Monday. Unfortunately, due to flooding in the Hellifield area, the tour was delayed by some 4.5 hours (3 by Peterborough).
The Saturday ECS is seen flying through Grantham in the dark. The Sunday railtour is seen coming off the old line to the docks at Kings Lynn, powering under the A149 at the Hardwick Retail Park, coasting through Whittlesea, flying up the bank Muston, accelerating away from Syston at East Goscote, taking water at Melton Mowbray, departing Melton at Lag Lane and finally powering away from Peterborough at Stanground. I had planned to see the return ECS on the Monday, but due to early running, I missed it.

The Nigel Dobbing Memorial Train with 35018 British India Line 17/03/2019 & the ecs on 16/03/19
After the passing of Nigel Dobbing the founder of The Railway Touring Company it was only fitting that as a tribute to the great man a special railtour would be run. What better steam locomotive to use for such train than the rebuilt Merchant Navy class 4-6-2 no, 35018 British India Line, a loco the Nigel worked so hard to get on the front of that famous Railway Touring Company train The Great Britain in 2018, sadly Nigel missed that tour but I'm sure that putting 35018 on his memorial train was the perfect choice.
We start the video off with the empty coaching stock move from Saturday night running as 5Z65 from Carnforth Steamtown to King's Lynn T.C. avoiding the football fans at the same time. The next day we started our journey at Watlington to see BIL passing as she heads south working 1Z66 from King's Lynn to Melton Mowbray via Peterborough, Grantham & Nottingham where thanks to a courteous Great Northern driver everyone was able to get their photos. I then moved on to March and set up shot at March West Junction to see the Bullied Pacific pass again. After taking on water the memorial train is seen again, this time at Bottesford and thanks to the car and the cut back I was able to get to East Goscote where I saw the tour yet again after it's run past Nottingham & Loughborough. Next up, the big one as part of this tour... Melton Mowbray itself where the train moves out of the way into the sidings for servicing, we also take a small look around the station in particular the plaques in the waiting room, in particular the new one commemorating the life of Nigel Dobbing. After a short and quick drive the next shot is at Lag Lane where the service now running as 1Z68 powers away from Melton Mowbray. Our final shot is at Ramsey Road in Whittlesea as the tour returns back it's origins this time running via Ely station

The Great Britain VII - Days 1 and 2 with 5029 and 34046 - April 26th / 27th 2014
Late April would see the start of seventh 'Great Britain' tour, promoted by Kings Lynn-based Railway Touring Company. This multi-day tour would begin in London, before heading down to Cornwall, where the train would head through the Welsh Marches, and along the Cumbrian Coast to the Highlands of Scotland, before returning down the East Coast Main Line back to Kings Cross.
The opening days of the Great Britain VII would follow a similar itinerary to the previous Great Britain. The tour would begin at London Victoria behind 34046 'Braunton', which would head the train down to Exeter. The original plan was then for 4936 'Kinlet Hall' and 5029 'Nunney Castle' to double-head the train over the South Devon Banks, before heading into Cornwall to Truro. Unfortunately, 4936 would be out of gauge, and the first substitute loco - 70000 'Britannia', was unavailable, undergoing essential work. With no other available locos, the train would be Diesel Hauled from Exeter to Truro.
This video begins at Salisbury, where 34046 drifts into the station for a water stop. After catching the next train down, the train is then seen racing through Sherborne, in the pouring rain. The Bulleid is next seen at Exeter St Davids, shortly after arriving. A few detailed shots of 34046 are captured, before the loco and support coach depart - heading for Exeter Riverside Yard. Meanwhile, the tour would now be hauled by 47746 and 47245. A few minutes after 34046 is detached, the tour departs Exeter in a very heavy downpour. Not long after the departure of the tour, 34046 passes through the station light engine, bound for Laira Depot, where the Bulleid would join 5029 'Nunney Castle' for the movement down to St Blazey Depot. This would take place in readiness for Day 2.
The second day would begin, with 5029 'Nunney Castle' and 34046 'Braunton' heading the train out of Falmouth Docks, where it would head up the Maritime Line to Truro, before heading through Cornwall - and over the Devon Banks to Bristol, where the train would finish for the day. 34046 would be the eventual substitute loco for both 4936 and 70000.
The sequence for Day 2 begins at Bodmin Parkway, where the pair are seen storming up the steep 1 in 60 gradient, with a short blast on the whistle from 5029. The pair are next seen departing the water stop at Plymouth, in beautiful afternoon sunshine. The weather would be completely different at my next location - Tiverton Parkway, where the pair speed through in driving rain, beginning the short climb to Whiteball. A pathing stop at Taunton meant that I could get ahead of them one last time, so I chose Bristol Temple Meads - and a shot that I'd wanted to try for quite a while. The pair are seen bringing the tour under the overall roof at Temple Meads, running almost 10 minutes early. A few detailed shots of both locos are captured, before heading out of Temple Meads, along with the ECS. The final shot shows both 5029 and 34046 departing Temple Meads, heading for Barton Hill Depot.
This was the first time that I'd managed to chase a 'Great Britain' tour for more than one day. Despite the mixed weather, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Hopefully, I'll be doing the same next year.

60103 'Flying Scotsman' - The Great Britain X Day 1 - 29/04/2017
The Kings Lynn based Railway Touring Company's annual mega railtour entitled The Great Britain now in it's 10th year once again set out from London for a grand tour of the country, to the top of Scotland and to the west of the country with 9 days of steam haulage, the first day was hauled by non other than the world famous 60103 'Flying Scotsman' (replacing 6201 'Princess Elizabeth) for a run along home turf from London Kings Cross to York on the East Coast Mainline where diesel haulage would continue day 1 to Edinburgh (replacing the recently returned 60009 'Union of South Africa' with last minute cylinder issues), on Saturday 29th April 2017
Before the grand tour of Britain would commence, 60103 undertook a positioning move from York NRM to Southall Wcr via the ECML on Thursday 27th April in preparation for the tour, seen powering her way through Sandy in the cold and soggy weather
2 days later and The Great Britain X sets out from the capital for the first part of the 188 mile run to York, seen also at Sandy in 2 clips as 'Scotsman' thunders through the station close to her permitted speed of 75mph in much better weather conditions
Having then caught the next Great Northern service northbound i captured the passing of Scotsman in Holme Loop from the train whilst awaiting her booked path back onto the mainline following a water stop, then not so long later the A3 glides into Peterborough for a booked 2 minute stop with a chance to get a couple of close up shots of the locomotive before the departure from the station heading towards the north (getting slightly bowled by a late running VTEC service in the process!)

34067, 45407 and 44871 - The Great Britain VI 20th/21st April 2013
The sixth Great Britain railtour, promoted by Kings Lynn-based operator The Railway Touring Company, would see a change to last years itinerary. In April 2012, the Great Britain V set off from London Kings Cross behind LNER A4 4464 Bittern and headed north to Scotland, before heading south west to Bristol and Penzance on the final few days. It concluded with that memorable dash along the Great Western Main Line with Tyseley-based Castle 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, with the Earl whistling through Didcot at 70mph... (The link to that video is here: )
This year, the original plan was to head south west first, before returning north later in the tour. Day 1 of the tour was supposed to see 5029 Nunney Castle, fresh from an overhaul, head to Taunton from Paddington via Newbury, where 34046 Braunton and 34067 Tangmere would take the train over the Devon banks to Newquay. In the event, 34046 and 5029 were not ready for the trips, and so 70000 Britannia was announced as the replacement for 5029, with the starting point changed to London Victoria, and 34067 starting at Exeter with 777 Sir Lamiel (the replacement for 34046). Unfortunately, after an operational incident meant that 70000 would not be available, and gauging issues meant that the sole-surviving N15 would not be able to take the tour from Exeter to Newquay.
With only a few days to go before the tour departed, the roster was altered again, with 34067 Tangmere taking the first leg to Exeter via Salisbury and Yeovil, and Ian Riley's ever-reliable Black 5s, 45407 and 44871 taking the train on to Par (not Newquay due to pathing issues).
Because this was the first time I was available for two days that the Great Britain railtour was in the south west, I decided to chase it into Cornwall - my first time filming on the Cornish main line properly (I had filmed at Liskeard in 2012, but only on the Looe Branch platform).
We begin this video at Woking, with 34067 Tangmere. Smack bang on time, and with green signals ahead, the Great Britain VI accelerated through, heading for the water stop at Winchfield. A few minutes later, 47245 raced through platform 4, and would attach to the train at Salisbury.
Having completed the 15 miles between Woking and Winchfield, the second camera captured the GBVI as it arrived at the water stop. Less than 15 minutes later, the tour accelerated away from Winchfield at Potbridge.
While the train watered at Woking, I jumped ahead of it and returned to my old favourite, Andover. Although the whistle and speed were good, the zoom wasn't...
While more water was taken at Salisbury, I reached Sherborne. With no one on the platform, it made for a clear shot at 34067 (and the supporting diesel) as it rounded the bend. With water being taken at Chard Junction, there was just enough time to reach Honiton station, and see the train wait for an up passenger service. It seemed half the town came out for the Great Britain VI, as the car park was packed when it came to departure time.
After catching the next train, I reached Exeter St David's with seconds to spare, and saw the departure to Riverside yard with 34067 still at the helm.
At Exeter, the two Black 5s took over from Tangmere for the run down to Par. I concluded day 1 of chasing with a risky shot, a panoramic from Exmouth across the Exe Estuary. I think this paid off though rather handsomely, with the two Black 5s at race speed. In this 3 minute shot, you can see the pair as they pass Exminster, before working their way round to Starcross and Cockwood Harbour.
Having stabled overnight in St Blazey depot in Par, the Black 5s are next seen on day 2, as they storm up the 1in60 bank to Liskeard station. From Liskeard, the pair watered at Plymouth, and there was just enough time to reach Totnes, at the bottom of Rattery bank. I wasn't expecting particularly much in terms of sound, and indeed I was right...
With another stop at Dawlish Warren, the duo were caught accelerating through Exeter St David's once again, with their 12 coach load in tow. Yet another pathing stop was made at Tiverton loop, and that allowed for one final shot of the Black 5 pair as they accelerated away towards Whiteball.
After the two Fives reached Bristol, they were taken off the train, and replaced by 34067 Tangmere. Having successfully climbed Filton Bank, 34067 is seen accelerating away from Filton Abbey Wood, while on the last leg of the journey to Cardiff (via Gloucester).
The video concludes with 34067 passing through Hook, while on a light engine movement back to Southall from Cardiff Canton.
Thanks to James (JSBVideoProductions), Tom (BristolCastle) and Kristian (letmadnessbegin) for their company over the weekend, Andrew on the train for the updates and the pint on Saturday, and Pat and Tony for their hospitality!

Places to see in ( Downham Market - UK )
Downham Market sometimes simply referred to as Downham is a market town and civil parish in Norfolk, England. It lies on the edge of the Fens, on the River Great Ouse, approximately 11 miles south of King's Lynn, 39 miles west of Norwich and 30 miles north of Cambridge.
The civil parish has an area of 5.2 km² and in the 2011 census had a population of 9,994 in 4,637 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of King's Lynn and West Norfolk. It is part of South West Norfolk parliamentary constituency.
It was an agricultural centre, developing as a market for the produce of the Fens with a bridge across the Ouse. During the Middle Ages, it was famed for its butter market and also hosted a notable horse fair. The market is now held Fridays and Saturdays on the town hall car park.
Notable buildings in the town include its mediaeval parish church, dedicated to St Edmund, and Victorian clock tower, constructed in 1878. The town is also known as the place where Charles I hid after the Battle of Naseby. In 2004 the town completed a regeneration project on the Market Place, moving the market to the town hall car park. The decorative town sign depicts the crown and arrows of St Edmund with horses to show the importance of the horse fairs in the town's history. A heritage centre, Discover Downham, opened in a former fire station in 2016.
Downham Market railway station, which serves the town, is on the Fen Line from London to King's Lynn. It opened in 1846. The town’s signal box is one of five rare examples across the region to have been granted Grade II listed status in 2013. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport awarded listed status to 26 signal boxes across the country as part of a joint project between Network Rail and English Heritage to secure the nation’s railway signalling heritage. Downham’s signal box was built in 1881 for the Great Eastern Railway Company but will soon be decommissioned as part of a 30-year modernisation project.

In this video we cover the 23 miles and 57 chains along the South Eastern Main Line from Ashford International to Dover Priory. This includes the section between Folkestone and Dover which had been out of bounds to our train if carrying passengers — until provision was made in the twin single-bore Shakespeare Tunnels to facilitate emergency egress from trains such as ours that have no end gangways. At the eastern end of Shakespeare Tunnel we also pass over the new viaduct built during 2016 after the original line was damaged in a storm a year earlier.

35018 British India Line
Seen heading the Nigel Dobbing Memorial Train back from Melton Mobray to Kings Lynn. Nigel was the founder of the Touring Railway Company, based near King's Lynn. He was born in Melton Mowbray, the memorial train ran for around 80 family, friends and collleagues. A memorial plaque was unveiled in the waiting room at the station.
35018 'British India Line' On ECS Move, Kings Lynn-Carnforth (18/03/2019):
Having operated the 'Nigel Dobbins Memorial Charter Train' yesterday from Kings Lynn to Melton Mowbray & return, 35018 is seen working the empty stock back to Carnforth. Filmed here almost five hours into her twelve hour cross country jaunt near Alrewas in Staffordshire.
Originally I set up on the opposite side of the crossing but once surrounded by AK47's (sometimes called SLR camera's) I thought it wise to go it alone..... vindicated when the late coming clattering step ladders arrived as the opening few seconds prove!!
Many thanks to Lee (NR Crossing Keeper) for his co-operation & assistance.
