The Ringing Rocks, Montana
The Ringing Rocks is a formation of mafic rocks east of Butte, Montana, that, when struck with a hammer, chime like a bell. It's thought that the rocks need some iron content in order to ring, though the amount of iron isn't as significant. What makes them ring doesn't depend on composition and location of the rocks as much as it does the general formation of them. Like the hollowness of a bell, the way that they're piled on top of each other leaving space underneath allows for the rocks to vibrate and ring when struck.

Montana Ringing Rocks
This unique geological formation is located approximately 18 miles east of Butte and north of I-90. The rocks in this unique geologic area chime when tapped lightly with a hammer. It is believed that the ringing is a combination of the composition of the rock and the way the joining patterns have developed as the rocks have eroded away, if a boulder is removed from the pile, it doesn't ring.
Ringing Rocks & Pipestone Trails Montana
A friend and I took a trip around some of the trails in the Pipestone, Mt area. We visited the Ringing Rocks and Delmoe Lake and drove on the great trails in the area. Did a little flying for some aerial shots at two locations. It was late in the season but there were still campers and a few swimmers at the lake. A great day!
