The destruction of Dong Ha Bridge - by Col. John W. Ripley - Part 1
Colonel John Ripley USMC:
Col. John Ripley, USMC, recounts his heroic feat destroying the Dong Ha bridge in Vietnam. Fatigued and undernourished, he had recourse to praying to Jesus and Mary giving him the strength he needed to complete his task. His description of how he received the supernatural grace is most inspiring. As Prof. Plinio Correa de Oliveira, a Brazilian Catholic leader, commented on hearing this epic feat, it was an event of Biblical proportion.

Col. John W. Ripley, USMC (Ret.)
Ripley relates his heroic feat of singlehandedly stopping the enemy during a major offensive on Easter Sunday in 1972. His tiny force of South Vietnamese marines was poised on one side of the Dong-Ha Bridge to take on the enormous force of North Vietnamese troops ready to attack from the other side. Undaunted, the determined Captain Ripley decided to take the situation in his own hands to bring down the bridge. Lugging explosives on his back and under heavy enemy fire, he precariously crawled under the bridge, set the explosives and blew up the massive structure.

Sombre return for Royal Marine and Medic 30.10.12
The bodies of two British service personnel killed in Afghanistan have been flown home today.
Corporal Channing Day from 3 Medical Regiment is the third UK woman to be killed on duty since the conflict began.
She died alongside Royal Marine Corporal David O'Connor in Helmand Province last Wednesday.
Their union flag draped coffins arrived at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire this afternoon.
After private ceremonies for their families on the air base, the cortege was escorted at walking pace past the memorial garden in Carterton, where the union flag was hung at half-mast.
An initial review into their deaths has revealed the killings were not caused by so called friendly fire but the Ministry of Defence says Investigations are continuing.

The Sherwoods Foresters
Traditions, Battle Honours and the 'Esprit De Corps' are the things Regiments are made of. They promote feelings of pride, honour, trust and above all else a sense of belonging.
Men are bound together into a family by these things and the bonds are powerful and lasting. Men will fight for their Country when ordered, but they will fight for the Honour of their Regiment simply because it is their family, and they are part of it.
One such 'Family' was The Sherwood Foresters. The regiment of the Counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Its men in the main were recruited from these two counties and this again helped make them into one of the nations most famous Regiment. (The Sherwood Foresters amalgamated with the Worcestershire Regiment in February 1970 to form The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters regiment.

Ripley's Museum in St Augustine, Florida (1974)
Sifting through more of my old home movies in 8mm sound, I came across my visit to the original Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum in St. Augustine, Florida. The St. Augustine Ripley's is located in Castle Warden, an historic Moorish Revival style mansion built in 1887. Built as a winter home for Millionaire William Warden, Castle Warden later served as a fashionable hotel owned by Norton Baskin and his wife, Pulitzer prize-winning novelist, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. Since 1950 the building has been the original permanent location of Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum.
After the Museum, we stop by the Castillo de San Marcos, a fort which once guarded olde St. Augustine. The Castillo de San Marcos took twenty-three years to build but, once in place, stood as the town's stalwart defender. In 1845, Florida became the twenty-seventh state admitted to the Union. The Castillo de San Marcos was renamed Fort Marion in honor of a Revolutionary War hero.
We finish out the film along the waterway near the Bridge of Lions.
This film was shot with the first model of Kodak's Ektasound Super8 camera which recorded synchronized sound on magnetic striped film. I used a Eumig Super8 sound projector to overlay the music. Very primitive by today's standards & not always that accurate. Along with the Fort, the Ripley Museum is still open to the public.
