The Floating Tank | DDAY 75
Duplex Drive tanks, or DD tanks, were a type of amphibious floating tank developed by the British during WW2.
This is the first of a short series of Royal Dragoon Guards videos we're uploading as part of our DDAY 75 exhibition, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
The film is narrated by General Sir Robert Ford, who went ashore on Gold Beach on 6 June 1944.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN WEEK
Marching through London to commemorate, once more, the Battle of Britain, the Royal Air Force honoured the men who fell in that glorious victory. They paid homage to the few at a service in the restored St. Clement Danes, re-consecrated last year in the presence of the Queen, as the Royal Air Force Memorial Church. The Battle of Britain, nearly twenty years ago, was won by the men who fought with Spitfires and Hurricanes. War-time film shows a few of the few in action in 1940. The RAF's last flying Hurricane made a fly-past, together with the last flying Spitfire. But they and their pilots will never be forgotten.

Beating Retreat (1955)
Gosport, Hampshire.
C/U of a boat figurehead bust representing the Earl St Vincent. C/U of the St Vincent crest. The Union Jack flag is being lowered - L/Ss. L/S of man in very strange uniform which includes large red and white hat lowering the flag. I think that this is a re-enactment of the 1763 Royal Marine's ceremony of Beating Retreat. L/S of Marines in old fashioned uniform marching from the garrison onto the parade ground of the Boys' Training School, H.M.S. Vincent at Gosport. Various shots of the boy trainees marching. A marching band is seen, the boys look pretty young.
M/S of other boys at the training school watching the parade. They wear contemporary blue shirts and trousers. Narrator explains that the uniforms of the earlier period were borrowed from the Naval Museum in Devonport so that replicas could be made. Tailoring was carried out by women volunteers, including the boys' mothers. Narrator explains the history behind the ceremony of Beating Retreat over various shots of the parade, Royal Navy personnel in uniform, and boys watching the parade. High angle shot of the parade is intercut with shots of a mother holding a young boy up for a better view. Narrator recounts the history of the training school and comments on the old fashioned style of marching.
Note: Sir John Jervis, Admiral of the British Fleet is mentioned at the start of the film and is presumably present. Paperwork relating to this ceremony on file.

Arromanches (British March{Coldstream Guards})
Albert E. Kelly was born in London 1914. He graduated at the Military Academy of Kneller Hall, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1951 he became Bandmaster at the Royal Sussex Regiment. Kelly is best known for his marches - such as Nijmegen, Arnhem and Arromanches.
Arromanches lies along the stretch of coastline designated as Gold Beach during the Normandy D-Day Landings. One of the beaches used by British troops in the Allied invasion. Arromanches was selected as one of the sites for two Mulberry Harbours built on the Normandy coast, the other one built further West at Omaha Beach. Sections of the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches still remain today with huge concrete blocks sitting on the sand, and more can be seen further out at sea.
Today Arromanches is mainly a tourist town. Situated in a good location for visiting all of the battle sites and War Cemeteries, there is also a museum at Arromanches with information about Operation Overlord, and in particular about the Mulberry harbours.
Kelly wrote the march Arromanches for the Kneller Hall March Composition Competition in 1948. He personally participated in the landing on the beach at Arromanches in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and was wounded in July 1944. This solemn and stately march is an appropriate tribute to the heroes of the landing at Normandy, where so many died. Kelly wanted it to be played with dignity.
Blues and Royals - Horse Guards Parade 30 June 2013
The Household Division is the most senior within the British Army. It comprises two regiments of Horse Guards (The Life Guards and The Blues and Royals) and five regiments of Foot Guards (Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards). Historically they have been the personal protection force to the Monarchy formed one year after The Restoration of 1660. As such, they mount the guard for the Royal Household (Royal residences) that sit within the Army's London District, being Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. Additionally, all members are deployed on active service in combat roles, with combat support roles for Musicians.
The two regiments of Horse Guards mount the guard at Horse Guards, a building that faces Whitehall to the east and Horse Guards Parade to the west. The central archway was and still is the official entry to Buckingham Palace, though now only used as such for high ceremonies. Changing of the Queen's Life Guard occurs daily at Horse Guards Parade at the same time as Changing The Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace by the Foot Guards.
Horse Guards (the building) was built when the Monarch's residence of Whitehall Palace sat across the road of Whitehall and St James's Park was part of the semi-private Royal Estate. The Palace burnt down in the time of Henry VIII, and the Royal Palace moved to St James's Palace, and then in 1837 Queen Victoria moved again to Buckingham Palace.
Any regiment of the Commonwealth can be invited to mount guard for short periods and this can occur with Foot Guards at Buckingham Palace or Horse Guards at Horse Guards. The King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery have in recent years found the Queen's Life Guard at Horse Guards for the first three weeks of July to facilitate the Household Cavalry's summer camp.
On 29 June 2013 the Guard Change from The Blues & Royals to The Life Guards was cancelled. On 30 June, The Blues & Royals exchanged with The Royal Horse Artillery as the Household Cavalry commenced their annual three-week summer camp for troopers and horses.
